Case II.

A young unmarried woman applied to me for the relief of constipation which had
existed for a long time, and recently was complicated with colicky pains in the abdomen.
The most annoying symptom was the cutting,
pinching pain in the abdomen. The stool was passed in hard lumps, crumbling at the
verge of the anus. Her abdomen was somewhat distended, and the symptoms indicated
incarcerated flatulence. I could elicit but few general. symptoms. A conspicuous symptom
was a marked inability to digest milk. Her face had a slightly yellowish hue, but I could
not find any evidence of enlargement or induration of the liver. The diagnosis of the
remedy was not difficult when the crumbling stools, colicky pains -in the abdomen,;
difficulty of digesting milk, .and the yellowish hue of the face were carefully considered.
Grumbling stools are especially characteristic of Ammonium mur., Magnesia mur.,
Mercurius and Natrum mur. All the symptoms I could obtain were covered by Magnesia
muriatica, and this remedy was administered in the 40m potency. The colicky pains were
speedily relieved, and on the following day the stool was passed with much less
difficulty, and the tendency to crumble was much less. She felt better in every way, and in
a few days the stools became normal. After about three weeks the constipation began to
show signs of recurrence, and the same remedy was given in the cm. potency. This wiped
out all her ailments and seems to have made a permanent cure of the constipation.

CASE VI.
Dec. 29, 1908 Mrs.xxx brown.eyed, reddish brown hair, aged 25 years, applied for relief
of persistent violent headaches. She had been in delicate health since 10 years, when she
had an attack of scarlet fever, followed by albuminuria, to which she had been subject, at
various periods from that time until now.
An attack of albuminuria preceded her visit to my office by about three weeks. The
attacks are always accompanied by backache, scant, burning urine, which may relieve the
backache.
Urine: Status present: slightly more than one quart in 24 hours. Sp-gr. 1022. Reaction,

slightly acid. Cloudy precipitate, scant after standing. Clear upon applying heat and nitac. No albumin.
A remarkable pallor of face, under the skin, in spite of the red cheeks.
Nausea; Suffered on the boat, on the train with back to engine; in swing; at sudden jerks
made by stopping and starting of trolley tars, each with pressure of stomach, > eructation.
Lips: White in the morning.
Menses: During, aching in anterior part of thighs and
legs; slow in starting; regular, normal flow; headache afterwards.
Stool: Regular and normal.
Sensation: Draft or cold wind blowing on ankles causes her to don high boots early in
autumn.
Mouth: Paleness of mucous membranes.
Thyroid: Enlarged after scarlet fever, painted with Iodine before albumin was diagnosed;
at present but slightly enlarged; swells with over-fatigue, with the sense of having the
head pulled backward.
Feet; Always cold, wears socks, until they are warm in bed: slight moisture.
Tongue: Red, anterior half, strawberry tip, slight coating posterior half.
Anamnesis of all symptoms, very unsatisfactory, taking the deeper constitutional
symptoms as I saw them, I found: Menses slow in starting (more than a day, at times):
Calc, Tuberc. Symptom of tension in cervical meninges. Tuberc.
Interchange of stomach and kidney symptoms: Tuberc.
Menses: Profuse with headache. Tuberc, and gave Tuberc. 50m (F.), one dose.
Jan. 26, 1906, report: Still has cold feet. For a week, sensation as if the wind blew on the
knees constantly. Headache: Considerable, no drawing in neck.
STUDY.
As if air was blowing upon one or fanning one; cold feet: Canth., Chel., Graph., Nux-v.,
Oleander, Puls.., Rhus-t., Sabin., Stram., Lac-d.
Pale lips: Puls., Lac-d. Lac-d. cm.
Feb. 23, 1909, report: Urine: Two different days, 1 qt. each. Sp. gr. 1015. Clear, boiling
and nit-ac. Patient had become accustomed to testing urine through the many years of
illness. As she resided 150 miles distant, this was convenient.
Headache: Last, Jan. 25, 1909.
Feet: Less cold, not preventing sleep.
Head: Grumbled as if pain was coming on.
Ache: Described as "through or back of left ear," "vertex," last attack. Lac-d. cm (H. S.).
Each and every report from family and friends since that date has been enthusiastic upon
her appearance and remarkable health.

AN OENANTHA CROCATA CASE. By Volney A. Hoard, M. D The following was the
most severe case of puerperal convulsions in my experience. A primapara of 32 years of
age, whose general health had always been good, and who had hud no trouble during her
pregnancy until the last week when the urine showed a small amount of albumin but no
other symptoms, Labor began at 6 p. m.; on my arrival two hours later, found the patient
complaining of occipital headacheblack spots floating before the eyes, and a.strange
feeling as she described it. She immediately went into a very severe convulsion.
Chloroform was administered, and with the instruments a still-born, well-developed child
was delivered. From the beginning of her labor, July 15th, at 9 p. m., to July 17th, at 1:40
p. m., she had twenty eight convulsions. She remained in a comatose condition until July
22nd, five days, and did not regain full consciousness until the afternoon of the 23rd.
From the time of delivery the convulsions were coming every one-half to three quarters
of an hour; pulse was growing weaker, lungs edematous. and respiration very irregular;
the outlook was anything but promising. Belladonna. Hyoscyamus, Stramonium and
Cuprum were given at different times, but did not seem to cover the case and did no
good. She had nausea with the convulsions, and marked twitching of the facial muscles.
On working the case out with the repertory given in Yingling's "Emergency Manual,"
which I always carry in my obstetrical bag, we found Oenantha stood highest, and turning
to the text found it described this particular cases as if It had been written from it, as
follows: Extreme restlessness and anxiety before, and followed by deep coma after the
spasm, rapid convulsive twitching of the facial muscles, face livid and turgid; hurried
labored breathing: nausea and vomiting, pupils dilated, foaming at the mouth; pulse
small, feeble and irregular. The next move was to get the remedy It was in the small hours
of the night and we knew of no one who had it On visiting the drug stores, found the
tincture of Oenantha, which was being pushed by a western pharmacy as a remedy for
epilepsy. Of this we gave one drop dose every fifteen minutes for a few times, then every
half to one or two hours as the convulsions grew less frequent, which they began to do
almost immediately. The following morning we found the remedy in the one thousandth
potency and changed to that, giving a dose after each convulsion. July 19th, Hyoscyamus
30th was given for the following symptoms: convulsive twitching of the respiratory
muscles, talking continually, laughs and then weeps, face flushed and then pale, eyes not
closed for twenty four hours, snaps her lingers frequently, desires to be uncovered, strikes
at her herself and at the bed. These symptoms improved gradually, and on the 21st
Hyoscyamus, one-thousandth, five powders, was given. From this time she gradually
improved and had no other remedy, except a dose of Lachesis, and later a dose of
Sulphur. Since this time she has been perfectly well, and four years from the date of her
sickness gave birth to a strong, healthy child, and had a normal labor.

CAZ 114 ROGER

M. A. W., aet. 30, asks treatment for an abdominal tumor, which is large enough to give her the
appearance of being about eight months pregnant. She is a house maid, and her friends will
not go out with her fearing that people will think they are associating with an unmarried
pregnant woman. She had consulted two surgeons who refused to operate because of the
rigidity and extensive adhesions, and also because of the sickly aspect of the girl. The face was
indeed waxy and sickly looking. These surgeons told her she would die from the tumor.
The tumor was first noticed five years ago. It became prominent on the right side of the uterus
and extended up out of the pelvis;
was said to be movable until two years ago. The uterus is now immovable and the tumor which
hangs over the right side of the pelvis is very hard, as large as a child's head, and cannot be
made to move in any direction.
1888.
June 1st. Pain in the pelvis now and then.
Swelling of the pit of the stomach not due to the tumor.
Swelling of the feet, indenting on pressure.
Constant congestive headaches which she could give no description of, only " it aches all over."
Eats but little, and what she eats causes nausea.
Constipation ; no desire for stool; takes physic, hence no modalities of value. Goes two or three
weeks without a stool.
Always feels a constriction about the waist, which most likely is due to pressure of tumor,
hence it is not a valuable symptom.
Sensation of great fulness after eating, and she mentions above that she eats but little.
Menses fairly regular "with cramps."
She has not drank water for eight years, as it makes her sick.
Feet burn so that she must take off her slippers to cool them.
Starts in sleep, and when awake starts at the slightest noise.
Restless sleep.
Pain in left side of abdomen.
Teeth decayed when young. They are dark and bad looking.
Wants hot things; cannot take cold things into the stomach.
Pain in the stomach after cold things. Pain and nausea after water, cold or warm.
Pain in right groin. She had this pain before the tumor was felt.

Lyc. cm. One dose, and Sac. Lac, morning and night, dry on the tongue.
July 23d.
The remedy increased the symptoms so much that she was alarmed and would not return for
many weeks, but now is so much better in a general way that she returns to report and ask for
more medicine. Upon close questioning it was found that for a week or more her symptoms
were on the increase. Her stomach symptoms at first grew worse, then improved and now are
worse again

Feet do not swell now.
She vomits and has a pain in stomach after eating or drinkLyc. mm. ing, Oct. 28th.
Symptoms all passed away, except that she has a pain in the right side, in the tumor.

Jan. 23d.
Symptoms returning, especially the stomach symptoms.

June 3d.

She has been improving steadily and was free from symptoms.
Bowels move every three or four days. Stool normal.
Feels more swollen than for some time.
Uncomfortable. Bad feelings returning.
Pain in right groin.
Feet swollen.
Headache in forehead and eyes.
Pain in lumbar region.
Lye. mm. Feet burn.
August 15th.
Symptoms have been gone since here last, but now are all Lyc. 2 mm. coming back. (Fincke.)
December 31st.
She has reported several times, but there were no symptoms.
Bowels regular.
She can eat and drink anything.
She looks well.
She says the last powders have made her well.
The tumor is what most readers will ask about, but has not been mentioned, as the tumor was
not treated. The patient was cured and the tumor at last report was small; the uterus was
movable and with it the small tumor also moved. She did not mind the tumor as she was so
well and shapely.
