PROCESS CHEMICALS
CHEMICAL CLEANING
Hello Ted,
The following is information that will assist you in Ambient Chemical Cleaning or
Degreasing of your Acid Gas Treating Section of Sarawak LNG Plant.
Our recommended procedure is to use a 2% weight/volume Ammoniated Citric Acid Solution
with 0.2% Wetting Agent and 0.2% Surfactant at Ambient Temperature provided recirculation
can be achieved.
This method of Chemical Cleaning degreases as well as descales Carbon Steel Pipework using
a totally non toxic and biodegradable solution which can be disposed of on site. This is the
same procedure used on several occasions on Woodside LNG in Western Australia.
Comprehensive Procedure is attached.
Our alternative (attached Procedure using Ammoniated Citric Acid is preferred method)
method is to use our water based Ambient Temperature Degreasing Agent which is Challenge
HD Cleaner.
Challenge HD Water Based Ambient Temperature Degreasing Solution is an alkali based
product combined with a emulsifier to remove oil and greases only.
The Challenge HD Cleaner would be used at 5% by volume and would require four (4) days
recirculation to achieve degreasing.
Process Chemicals
Neutralisation of Challenge HD Water Based Degreaser would be achieved using Citric Acid.
preferred method using Ammoniated Citric Acid Solution with Wetting Agents
and Surfactant Agents is six (6) days which includes setting up
and
using Water Based Degreaser Challenge HD Cleaner is five (5) days which
includes setting up

We can come on site to assist with all facets of Cleaning and Testing on a Turn Key basis.
We would require four (4) of our men on site for Chemical Cleaning Operation.
Our costs for four (4) men would be Aus $320.00 per hour for approximately 100 hours which
would include Mobilisation, Demobilisation time.
Price does not include Accommodation, Travel, Vehicles.

As you are aware we have used both above procedures on several occasions on projects
throughout Australia and in particular at Burrup/Woodside LNG Plant.
Preferred Procedure Degreases as well as Descales at Ambient Temperature. Water Based
Degreaser removes oils and greases only at Ambient Temperature.
I trust the above information is as required and am looking forward to hearing from you.
If you require further information please give me a call on either 9419 5577 or 0417 940834.

The following method for the pre-commission Combined Degreasing and Chemical Cleaning of
the Acid Gas Section Lines is the most effective and safest with respect to the multi-metal
circuit, valves and personnel in area.
In this application, Chemical Cleaning Degreasing Solution mildness (not a vigorous acid
attack on metals), non-toxicity and efficiency are the most important considerations. The
Ammonium Citrate Degreasing and Acid Cleaning Solution (mixture of Citric Acid, Wetting
Agent, Surfactant Agent and Ammonia) is safe, fume free and adverse effects to personnel and
material through use of strong Degreasing and Acid Cleaning Chemicals is eliminated.
The advantages for using Ammoniated Citric Acid with Wetting Agents and Surfactant Agents
are:-

The purpose of pre-commission Degreasing and Acid Cleaning is to remove (by dissolving) all
oils, oxides and debris from the pipe internals.
Consequently, our aim is to move solution at reasonable velocity through the lines to ensure no
area is in contact with exhausted Chemical Solution.

ACID
CLEANING
Batch mix a 2% by weight Citric Acid Solution in chemical recirculation tank using
water with 0.2% Surfactant and 0.2% Wetting Agent detergent.
2.
Fill circuit with this solution and recirculate using Plant Installed Pump Units.
3.
Continue moving Combined Degreasing and Citric Acid Solution through lines and
sample every hour, test and record for:-
Acid Concentration
pH
(Using pH Meter)
Oil Pick Up
(Ultraviolet)
4.
Continue moving this solution for minium of 6 hours and test every hour.
Should Combined Degreasing and Acid strength fall below 2% weight/volume then
further Citric Acid must be added to elevate acid concentration to 2% weight/volume.
Iron Pick-Up is dependant on condition of pipe but for new pipe an Iron Pick up of
between 600 - 2500 ppm is acceptable.

After overnight soak, continue moving solution for one (1) hour and analyse for Iron
Pick-Up and Acid Strength. At this stage Combined Degreasing and Acid Strength and
Iron Pick-Up will be constant and stabilised.

Citric Acid Cleaning Solution pH is elevated to pH 3.5 and recirculated for eight (8)
hours and allowed to soak overnight.

9.
After two (2) hours recirculation, add sufficient Sodium Nitrite (0.5% Weight/Volume)
and check the Sodium Nitrite concentration form return hose for uniformity. The pH of
this solution will remain at approximately 9.0 + 0.5.
Recirculate this solution of one (1) hour.

Drain all Chemical Cleaning Solution into Waste Water Pond or Soil. The Ammoniated
Citric Acid solution is non toxic and totally biodegradable.

The Acid Gas Lines will now be ready for commissioning and no rerusting will occur
provided water is kept out of pipes.
