It is my pleasure to introduce to you the Spanish Language Group Newsletter for Fall 2016. The
aim of the newsletter is to inform new students about the free opportunities offered at St Paul
University and to account for the activities carried out last academic year. We hope you find it
useful as you experience life in this lovely St Paul University which we all call a home. George

The Spanish Language Group is a great addition to Saint Paul University. Under the energetic leadership of George
Nchumbonga, these groups made quite an impact on campus with their activities, social connections, enthusiasm, celebrations and support to all students of our university. The groups were instrumental in creating networking opportunities and
enhancing student life at Saint Paul University. Thank you for the human investment and long life to all the groups.
Le Groupe de la langue Espaola est un atout indniable lUniversit Saint-Paul. Sous lnergique direction de George
Nchumbonga, ces groupes ont eu un effet des plus positifs au niveau de la vie universitaire de par les activits, les liens,
les clbrations mis en uvre mais aussi de par lenthousiasme et lappui dont ils ont fait preuve et ce envers tous les
tudiants. Ces groupes se sont avrs une vraie amlioration de la vie tudiante sur le campus et un renforcement assur
du point de vue du rseautage et de lentraide. Un investissement important de capital humain. Merci et longue vie tous

MESSAGE FROM THE DESK OF THE SPANISH LANGUAGE GROUP COORDINATOR OF ST PAUL STUDENTS, OTTAWA
Bienvenidos estimados amigos!
Welcome to the Spanish Language Group of St Paul Students. I am called George
Nchumbonga Lekelefac and I am the Spanish language coordinator of this group which was officially
authorized by the St Paul University Student Association on Friday 23 of October, 2015.
It is with great delight that I present to you the Spanish Language Group newsletter whose
aim is to inform you on the opportunities and activities which this group freely offers. With my two
years Mexican experience to study Spanish (2009-2011), I was inspired to share my talents by founding the Spanish Language group. The group welcomes all who are interested in initiating,improving,
and perfecting Spanish.
Notre groupe met fortement l'accent sur: 1) les ressources acadmiques pour faire progresser
vos comptences linguistiques Espagnol. 2) La connaissance culturelle en collaborant avec 15 ambassade Ottawa qui ont la Langue Espagnol comme langue officielle. 3) Nous crons un esprit communautaire o chacun peut appartenir, afin de se dbarrasser des consquences ngatives de l'individualisme et de favoriser les relations interpersonnelles fructueuses qui rend notre universit un lieu unique de formation intgrale. Notre groupe offre
une ambiance conviviale, saine et humaine faisant notre universit une maison.The purpose of this newsletter is to provide information on the Spanish
Language Group of St. Paul Students. This is our first edition and we are very delighted to make this available to the St. Paul University Students.
We hope that you may discover our vision, mission and objectives so that you may join us as we contribute in making St. Paul University a Spiritual,

ESPAOL; HERRAMIENTA FUNDAMENTAL EN EL MUNDO GLOBALIZADO

En el mundo se hablan unas 7.000 lenguas, pero la mayor parte de
las personas se comunican en un nmero reducido de ellas. Algunas lenguas cuentan con una poblacin nativa muy extensa, como
el chino, el espaol, el hindi o el ingls. Otras no tienen una demografa tan destacada, pero poseen una amplia difusin internacional,
como el francs, el rabe o el portugus. El espaol es la tercera
lengua ms hablada en el mundo como lengua nativa.
El espaol es el idioma hablado por unos 450 millones de personas
en todo el mundo, segn datos presentados por la Organizacin de
las Naciones Unidas para la Educacin, la Ciencia y la Cultura
(UNESCO), siendo la tercera lengua ms importante del mundo solo
superada por el chino, hablado por 1.200 millones y el ingls, que es
hablado por 478 millones.

Otros datos mostrados por la UNESCO revelan que, por razones

demogrficas, el porcentaje de poblacin mundial que habla espaol como lengua nativa est aumentando, mientras la proporcin de
hablantes de chino e ingls desciende.

El Instituto Cervantes, encargado de preservar el acervo histrico y

cultural de la lengua espaola estima que, en el 2030, el 7,5% de la poblacin mundial ser hispanohablante (un total de 535
millones de personas), porcentaje que destaca por encima del ruso (2,2%), del francs (1,4%) y del alemn (1,2%). Para entonces, slo el chino superar al espaol como grupo de hablantes de dominio nativo.
Con estos importantes datos podemos comprender las razones que han motivado a las principales universidades del mundo,
desde hace un poco ms de 10 aos, ha promover ctedras, programas y cursos dedicados al estudio del espaol. En la actualidad unos 14 millones de alumnos en el mundo estudian el espaol como segunda lengua.
Un panorama mostrado por el Instituto Canadiense de Estadstica, revela la importante presencia de la comunidad hispanoparlante en Canad. De hecho, la comunidad canadiense con orgenes latinos es la segunda ms importante despus de la
europea, representada por 244.400 ciudadanos, que en un 87% de su totalidad habla o entienden espaol, segn el ltimo
censo revelado por este ente en el 2001.
En este sentido, la iniciativa emprendida por la Universidad Saint-Paul de promover un programa de estudios de la lengua espaola tiene un meritorio reconocimiento, no solo por ser la ms renombrada universidad catlica de la capital canadiense,
sino por reconocer la imperiosa necesidad que tienen sus egresados profesionales de interactuar en una sociedad como la
canadiense, ampliamente multicultural y competitiva.
Como Embajador de la Repblica Bolivariana Venezuela en Canad, quiero expresar mi gratitud por la anegada dedicacin y
mstica con que esta casa de estudios ha emprendido el programa de espaol, en especial el esfuerzo dispuesto por George
Nchumbonga Lekelefac , coordinador y fundador del Grupo de la Lengua Espaol de los Estudiantes de St. Paul y
Marie Maltais, Directora de la Oficina Internacional de la universidad de St. Paul, Ottawa, por hacer posible que sus primeros graduandos del programa de espaol dominen con maestra este hermoso lenguaje.
Finalmente, reitero mi enrgico apoyo a esta iniciativa y continuamos deseosos de participar en cualquier iniciativa que con
motivo de este programa educativo tenga a bien desarrollarse; y para los nuevos estudiantes del programa solo quiero recordarles que la educacin no slo enriquece la cultura, sino que es la condicin ms bsica y fundamental para el crecimiento
espiritual, social y perdurable de una sociedad, haciendo posible la libertad, la democracia y el desarrollo sostenible.

I certainly encourage our students to participate in the Spanish Language group in order to get to know each other better and broaden
ones perspective. It is important to be sensitive to other ways of expressing ideas and understanding of the world we live in. We say that

Estamos muy contentos con la actividad desarrollada por la Universidad y en especial bajo tu coordinacin. Creo valioso que pienses en hacer de este evento algo
constante y donde mensualmente alguien de nuestro equipo pueda estar compartiendo en las clases de espaol sobre temas de Latinoamrica (cultura, turismo, historia,
economa, etc). Considero que tu iniciativa marca un precedente nico para la proyeccin no solo de la Universidad, sino para la catedra de otros estudios como el
espaol, el portugus y el italiano; es un ejemplo a seguir, continalo haciendo estimado amigo. Por cierto, el equipo de trabajo de la Universidad no solo refleja gran

The Spanish Language Group is great addition to Saint Paul University. They bring to light the rich diversity and unity of the
student population in getting to know each other through sharing of knowledge and celebrating their cultures. I wish them all the

I am very excited by our Spanish Language group here at Saint Paul University, where students can converse in Italian. They are
a wonderful opportunity for students to pick up a language new to them, or to share one they already know; through the process
they are all about students teaching students. They also tell us about the cultural diversity at Saint Paul University, and how it

I believe that the Spanish Language group brings a sense of diversity to Saint-Paul. They are part of the reason why many of our
students can call our campus "home". I also believe our students greatly appreciate having a group of people they can relate to and
share the knowledge and history they have in common. On that note, I wish that our students continue to join groups that are important to the blossoming of their culture.
