Self-check Operation at Plug-in

Slide #12

Self-check Operation at Plug-in

When AC is applied to the TV, the Standby circuit of the P board outputs 5Vdc to the A board. On the A board The
STB5V is converted to 3.3V to power the system control circuit for standby operation. The STB3.3V is also applied to
the Remote Control receiver and the power LED on the V board. The MPU (IC1102) of the A board outputs the
TV_SUB_ON command to turn on the transistors Q5434 and Q5433 which provide STB5V to the power relay. The
STB5V enters the power supply board via pin 3 of connector A03/P2. The TV_SUB_ON command is also provided to
the power supply to activate a circuit that provides a ground connection to the relay. When the relay is closed, the
switched mode supply goes in operation to create the P17V, TUNER6V, and DTV12V. These voltages remain present
for approximately 15 seconds while the unit performs the self-check procedure.
If the power button (main unit or remote control) is not pressed within 15 seconds after applying AC to the unit, the
SUB_ON command goes low to disengage the power relay. When the power button is pressed, the SUB_ON command
goes high to repeat the same operation. The voltages remain present until the unit is turned off.
The inverter (DC to AC) circuit does not operate during the self-check operation.
Caution: All boards in this unit are to be exchanged only.

Slide #13

Standby Circuit Diagram

After the 15 seconds of self-check the relay turns off and the unit enters the standby mode. The only voltages that
remain present are the TUNER6V and STB5V. IC5480 regulates the STB5V to STB3.3V to the power the MPU IC1102
of the A-board. The STB3.3V is also applied to the EEPROM of the A-board and the remote receiver of the V board.

Slide #14

Power On Circuit Diagram

Slide #15

Power On Circuit Diagram

The STB5V output of the P board enters the A board when the unit is plugged into the AC outlet. IC5480 of the A board
converts the STB5V to 3.3V to power the system control circuit and place the unit in the standby mode. Activation of the
power switch causes the MPU (IC1102) to output the TV-SUB-ON command via pin 8 of the connector A4/AP4. The TVSUB_ON command is routed to the power supply board (P) to provide a ground connection for the power relay. On the
A board, the TV_SUB_ON command turns on the transistors Q5433 and Q5434 to output the STB5V to the relay of the
power supply board. As a result, the relay closes and the power supply becomes fully operational. P17V, Tuner6V and
DT12V are output. The MPU issues the TV_MAIN_ON command to turn on Q5417 and output sound+17V switch to the
audio amplifier. The MPU also outputs the PANEL VCC command to turn on Q5412 and output 12V to the panel.

Slide #16

Inverter_off Amber Light

The foil side of the A board contains an amber light that momentarily glows when the unit is turned on. The MPU,
IC1102, outputs the G_Panel_LED_ON command (High) to transistor Q5495 to turn on diodes D2753 and D2754.
When the inverter pulls its Inverter_SOS output low, the MPU changes the G_Panel_LED_ON command to low to turn
off the light.

Slide #17

Video Process Diagram

Slide #18

Video Process Diagram

The main function of the A board is to select and process incoming video signals. Composite video, s-video, component
video, and the composite video output of the tuner are all connected to IC3001 for selection. The video output signal of
IC3001 can be in any of the three analog formats; Video, Y/C, or Y, Pb, Pr. The selected output enters IC4510, the HDMI
IF Receiver/Decoder IC, for A/D conversion. The 10 bit RGB data is provided to a video switch. The HDMI receiver
section of IC4510 converts the incoming HDMI signals to RGB data and outputs to the switch. The output of the switch is
provided to the PEAKS LITE IC, IC8001.
Digital television reception of the tuner is output in the form of a transport stream (CHODATA). The
transport stream enters the DTV I/F (Interface) section of IC8001 where the video signal is extracted and converted to
RGB data. The JPEG data of the GS board enters the JPEG I/F section of IC8001 for conversion into RGB data. The
internal video selector of IC8001 (not shown in the diagram) selects and outputs the desired picture data to the Video
Process circuit section of IC8001.
The Video Process section of IC8001 performs all picture control operations such as brightness, contrast,
color, tint, etc. On Screen Display data such as channel numbers, Digital TV closed caption, and picture adjustments are
mixed with the video data. The 8 bit RGB output of IC8001 is provided to IC4202, the LVDS transmitter. The transmitter
distributes signals with low-jitter, while creating little noise. It reduces power consumption and the generated noise from
data transmission. Another benefit of the LVDS standard is minimal concern for cable length. The output of the LVDS
transmitter is provided to the LCD for display.

Slide #19

Audio Process Diagram

Slide #20

Audio Process Diagram

IC3001 of the A board handles the audio selection of the analog inputs. Analog audio of the tuner and audio
signals from composite, component, and DVI inputs are connected to IC3001 for selection. The output of IC3001 enters the
A/D converter of the audio DSP, IC4510, for conversion to serial data. The digital audio enters a switch for selection.
IC4510 converts the incoming HDMI audio signal to serial data. The digital audio then enters a switch for
selection. Digital television reception of the tuner is output in the form of a transport stream that contains MPEG2 video and
AC3 audio. The transport stream enters the DTV decoder section of IC8001 where the AC3 audio signal is extracted. The
AC3 audio signal is provided to IC4510 for connection to the digital audio output jack. IC8001 also converts the extracted
AC3 audio to serial data for output to IC4510. The digital audio then enters a switch for selection.
The audio DSP, IC4510, selects the desired audio signal and provides three outputs. One output is either AC3
or PWM audio connected to the digital audio output jack. A second output is analog audio provided to the headphone jack.
The third output is adjusted for volume, bass, treble, and balance and provided as PWM data to the audio amplifier IC2301.
The amplified two channel PWM data is output to the right and left channel speakers for sound reproduction.

Inverter SOS_ Power LED blinks One Time

Pin 5 of connector P4/A20 should toggle low after the backlights of the LCD panel turn on. If the backlights do not
come on or pin 5 of CN P4/A20 does not toggle low, reseat the connectors P5, P6, and P4/A20. Confirm the
presence of approximately 3V (Inverter On Command) at pin 3 of connector P4/A20 after pressing the power button.
If not present, the A board is defective. If it is present, confirm the presence of approximately 700Vrms at CN P5 and
CN P6. Keep in mind that the inverters output is AC, see slide 36 for connection of the high voltage probe. If AC is
present at CN P5 and CN P6 right before the unit shuts down, replace the LCD panel. If there is no AC present right
before the unit shuts down, replace the P board.
Slide #27

TV SOS_ Power LED Blinks Three Times

Over-current and over-voltage detection are performed on the A board.

1.

When an Over-current condition of the P17V line exists, current flows through the resistors R5719, R5718, and
the diode D5711. As a result pin 21 of IC5480 goes low to trigger the three blinks shutdown. For over-current
condition, right before shutdown, check the 17V source at pin 12 of connector P2/A03. If it is normal, the A
board is defective. If it is low or absent, use an ohmmeter to determine if there is a short to ground. When a
short is detected, disconnect the connector P2/A03 to narrow it to the A or P board.

2.

Pin 17 of IC5480 monitors for over-voltage condition. Output Voltages of the power supply as well as regulated
output voltages of the A board are monitored for over-voltage condition. On Connector P2/A03, measure the
voltage sources. If any of the voltage voltages exceeds the verse breakdown voltage of the inline zener diode,
the unit shuts down and the power LED emits 3 blinks. If the voltages are normal replace the A board.
Slide #28

DTV12V SOS_ Power LED Blinks Four Times

The DTV12V line is monitored by the MCU. If it is missing or shorted, the MCU shuts down the unit and blinks the
Power LED four times. The DTV12V source is switched and provided to the LCD panel via the LVDS connector.
Disconnect the LVDS connector to see if the blink code goes away. If it does, replace the LCD panel. If the code is
still present Reseat the connectors P2/A03 and turn on the unit. If the shutdown persists, use a voltmeter to measure
the voltage. If it is present, replace the A board. If it is absent, use an ohmmeter to determine if there is a short to
ground. When a short is detected, disconnect the connector P2/A03 to isolate the short to either the A or P board.

Slide #29

SUB5V SOS_ Power LED Blinks 6 Times

The SUB5V monitored by the MCU is derived from the TUNER6V output of the power supply. If it is missing or
shorted, the MCU shuts down the unit and blinks the Power LED. Reseat the connectors P2/A03 and turn on the
unit. If the shutdown persists, use a voltmeter to measure the TUNER6V source. If it is present, replace the A board.
If it is absent, use an ohmmeter to determine if there is a short to ground. When a short is detected, disconnect the
connector P2/A03 to isolate the short to either the A or P board.

Slide #30

SUB/MAIN 9V and SUB/MAIN 3.3V SOS_ Power LED Blinks 5 or 7 Times

The SUB9V and SUB3.3V lines are monitored by the MPU. If the voltage corresponding to the number of blinks is
missing or shorted, the MPU shuts down the unit and blinks the Power LED. Reseat the connector P2/A03 and turn
on the unit. If the shutdown persists, use a voltmeter to measure the DTV12V source. If it is present, replace the A
board. If it is absent, use an ohmmeter to determine if there is a short to ground. When a short is detected,
disconnect the connector P2/A03 to isolate the short to either the A or P board.
Slide #31

Sound SOS_ Power LED Blinks 9 Times

On the A board, the MPU (IC1102) monitors the operation of the audio power amplifier IC2301. If IC2301, or
one of the speakers develops a short circuit, pin 16 of IC2301 outputs a low. As a result the transistor Q2301 turns on and
outputs a high to pin 27 of the MPU. When a 9 blinks shutdown occurs, disconnect the speakers one at a time and turn the
unit on. If the problem remains, replace the A board. If it goes away, the disconnected speaker is the problem.

Caution: Be sure to unplug the unit from the AC outlet when measuring resistance.

Slide #33

Inverter Output Test

The inverter converts the DC output of the main power supply to AC electricity to
power the backlights (CCFLT) of the LCD panel. The electricity generated in the
TC-L32S1 is 2000Vp-p or 707Vrms. Use extreme caution when handling the power
supply board.

TC-32LS1 Inverter Output Measurement

2000 Vpp = 707 Vrms
Formula:
Vrms = 0.3535 X Vpp

This connection of the Tektronix P6015 1000X high voltage probe produces the voltage measurement displayed above.
This type of connection to the inverters output leads results in a shutdown after approximately 8 seconds of operation. This
is due to extra load added to the output, which results in an impedance mismatch. The power LED blinks one time. The unit
has to be disconnected and re-connected to the AC outlet to restore operation. The waveform displayed on the scope is
the peak to peak value. To calculate the RMS value, use the formula: Vrms = 0.3535 X Vpp

Connection for Best Result

1000 Vpp = 707 Vrms

Formula:
Vrms = 0.707 X Vp

To avoid a shutdown when testing the inverter output, use the positive connection of the probe at any of the outputs while
leaving the negative lead disconnected. The display of the oscilloscope will only show half of the total voltage. This will be
the peak value (not peak to peak). To calculate the RMS value, use the formula:
Vrms = .707 X Vp
Slide #36

Greenlees GT-11 Voltage Detector

The Greenlee GT-11 Voltage Detector
performs fast, easy non-contact voltage
detection. It is intended to check for the
presence of AC voltage, signaling the user
with an intermittent tone and a flashing
LED. It contains the following:
1.
2.
3.

A bright LED and audible alarm to indicate

the presence of voltage
An on-off switch to prolong battery life
A comfort grip to ease fatigue

It detects voltages in the range of 50 VAC to

1000 VAC.

Operating Instructions

Battery cap

1. Turn the unit on by rotating the battery cap so that the pointer is in the ON position.
2. Test the unit on a known live circuit before each use. An AC outlet is a good source for a test.
If the unit does not function as expected on a known live circuit, replace the batteries.
3. Place the probe tip on or near the circuit or unit to be tested. Tone and flashing LED indicate
the presence of voltage.

Slide #37

TC-32LS1 P Boards Neon Lamp

The neon lamp on the power supply board
should be observed when troubleshooting an
inverter problem or a one blink error code.
Under normal condition the bulb remains off.
An overload condition due to a defective lamp
(CCFLT) or a breakdown of the inverter circuit
causes the bulb to blink on/off to alert the
technician of the condition. When
troubleshooting, always replace the power
supply board first since it is the likely one to go
bad.

Slide #38

External use of a Neon bulb to check Inverter

A neon bulb connected in series with a one
megohm resistor may also help determine
whether a 1 blink shutdown is coming from the
panel or the P board. Without power applied to
the unit:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Disconnect the P5 and P6 connector

from the P board.
Attach a 1 megohm resistor to either the
P5 or P6 socket as shown in the picture.
On the other end of the resistor connect a
neon bulb.
Apply power to the unit and press the
power button.

Before shutting down, the unit should make

three consecutive attempts at powering up.
During each attempt, the neon bulb lights up,
indicating the proper operation of the P board
and possibly a defective panel. If the bulb
does not light up, this indicates a bad P board
(inverter).
Note: The test may also be performed with the
cables connected.

Glossary
120Hz Motion Picture Pro 3
Even fast-moving scenes are displayed sharply and clearly. With a 60Hz video signal input, 120Hz Motion Picture Pro 3
makes 120 frames/sec from 60 frames/sec. This increases the frame count to allow natural frame-to-frame transitions, for
smooth motion images with high resolution. VIERA also uses motion focus technology that greatly enhances resolution.
20000:1 High Contrast With I.C.S
Enjoy realistic starlit skies right in your living room. Improvements in panel contrast and scene-adaptive contrast gamma
correction have achieved a high contrast ratio of 20,000:1. The backlight tuning area is also expanded to achieve deeper
blacks.
Wide Viewing Angle
The wide 178 viewing angle of the IPS Alpha panel ensures clear images even when viewed from an angle. The backlight's
wide transmission aperture enhances the contrast between light and dark, and improves motion-image response.
Viera Image Viewer TM
It's easy to view full-HD* images with the SD card slot. Watch and show your photos right after you take them. Simply insert
an SD card into VIERA to display photos on the large screen. You can also choose from among 3 types of background music
and 4 display effects. It's much more fun when you can view them on a large-screen HDTV with family and friends in
1920 x 1080-pixel* high definition and a wide 16:9 aspect ratio.
Viera Link TM
VIERA Link allows interconnected operation of various AV devices using only the VIERA remote control, by simply
connecting the devices to each other by an HDMI cable.
Viera Tools
With the new VIERA Tools user interface, simply press a button on the remote control and icons such as the photos or movies
from the menu screen. Now you can just select the one you want. This kind of easy operation means you have more fun and
less hassle.
Game Mode
In Game mode, quicker image response increases the enjoyment of video games when a game console is connected to the
TV. What's more VIERA produces the dark images in video games more clearly. This mode works anti-image retention
(wobbling) too.

Glossary
Standby Power Save
When the VIERA power is turned off, the standby power of connected devices is minimized.
Eco Mode
Panasonic has further enhanced its energy-saving efficiency with fine power control and an automatic off function.
Motion Focus technology
The VIERA LCD detects areas with motion and activates backlight blinking for only those areas, greatly enhancing resolution.
Fine Black Panel
Panel reflections have been reduced to half those of conventional panels, to sharpen images and reduce glare. This also
helps to unify the panel design with that of the VIERA lineup.
X.V. Color
The human eye can see a broader range of colors than the standard sRGB color space. The xvYCC (Extended YCC
Colorimetry for Video Applications) color standard (IEC 61966-2-4) is a tagcolor space for use in video electronics to display
virtually the entire gamut of colors perceivable by the human eye. The extended xvYCC standard supports some 1.8 times as
many colors as the commonplace sRGB color space providing deeper greens, reds and blues. HDMI v1.3 supports the x.v.
color standard. High Definition devices such as televisions, personal computers and DVD players are now able transmit and
display a broader color space (30-bit, 36-bit and 48-bit (RGB or YCbCr)) color depths for more natural looking color images.
To support these improvements HDMI 1.3 bandwidth has increased from 165MHz to 340 MHz. The increased bit rates also
allow for improved contrast.
