EDTORIAL

SOLUTION FOR CONSERVATION OF

NATURE
Rig Veda extols trees and
says that - trees blossom and
bear fruit because of Ushma, urja and megha . They
offer all that they have for others and for the
environment. It is said in Rig Veda (7/4/5) that
medicinal herbs, trees and Earth possess an infinite
treasure-house of energy that never diminishes - '
Tamoshadheeshchavaninashcha
garbhambhoomishcha vishwadhayasambibharti'.
The rishis in Yajur Veda (16/20/20) show
immense respect towards the trees and say one
should have reverence and devotion towards all
eatables, grains, forests, medicinal herbs, trees and
vegetation. One should hold trees in high esteem
because they are an indivisible part of our lives.
Trees absorb smoke and dust too. In this
context, the table below shows the extent to which
various kinds of trees possess the capacity to absorb
poisonous gases and smoke.

Palm tree is considered to be most efficient
when it comes to refining the atmosphere. A variety
of palm tree known as lady palm tree is not only
an air cleanser but it also kills insects and other
pests. The trees present on the banks of rivers help
in controlling soil erosion and hence in controlling
floods.
Even NASA in its survey shows that the air
pollution within homes is primarily due to
formaldehyde, Ammonia and Benzene. These gases
make the air inside the house heavy and polluted.
NASA has provided a list of 10 plants that can solve
this problem and absorb the indoor air pollutants,
they are - Areca Palm, Lady Palm, Bamboo,
Rubber, Dracaena, English Ivy, Date Palm,

,LVkseSfVDl

Weeping Fig, Boston Fern, and Peace Lily.

Neem tree is considered to be an air purifier
and also an insect-killer. This tree also retains the
moisture in the land, thus controlling the groundwater level. Contrary to Neem, eucalyptus absorbs
all the ground water and leaves the land dry.
Neem trees are planted during drought and
famine because they protect the moisture in the
soil and keep it fertile.
In Bhagawad Gita, Lord Krishna has extolled
Peepal as - ' Vrukshaanaamashwatthoham' meaning 'I am the Ashwattha tree ( Peepal tree )
among the trees'. Religious and spiritual
significance of Peepal is so great that it is difficult
to adequately describe it in words.
Peepal tree emits the largest amount of oxygen
during the day and releases lowest amount of
carbon dioxide during the night. This process in
science is called as Crassulacean acid metabolism
. A scientific study has revealed that Peepal tree
releases a chemical called Isoprene in large
quantities. This chemical strengthens the ozone
layer in the atmosphere. Experiments have shown
that planting Peepal trees is a sure solution to
solving the ozone layer depletion. The atmosphere
around Peepal tree is extremely clean, pure and
satwik.
Tulsi holds an important place among
religiously important trees. It is believed that any
place with Tulsi plant becomes a Teertha and Yama,
the lord of death cannot enter Tulsi provides pure
air and also destroys insects and pests. Tulsi also
bestows longevity. Incurable diseases like cancer
can also be cured using Tulsi. It is considered to be
anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial and anti-cancer.
Vedas extol trees as 'vanayam', meaning
protector of forests. Hence cutting down trees is
considered a sinful act. Upanishads say that one
has to plant at least 10 plants before cutting down
one tree.

Achla or Apara Ekadashi

1-6-2016

A Golden Way to Seek Forgiveness from God

Paran (breaking of fast) Time on 2-6-2016:
05:27 to 08:12
Dwadashi will end on Paran day: 18:39
Ekadashi begins: 1-6-2016 at 00:39 am
Ekadashi ends: 1-6-2016 at 21:49

According to the puranas, it was in Treta Yug that

King Bali started acting arrogant after being
conferred with the title Chakravarty Samrat. Such
was his pride that he made Lord Indra to leave from
Heaven after attacking it.
Indra sought asylum from King Vishnu who
took the avatar of Vamana (dwarf) showing that
he is Trivikrama, the Lord of Three Worlds. King
Bali realized his mistake and obliged to Lord
Vishnu.
The Story of King Yudhishthir
King Yudhishthir, the eldest of Pandavas in
Mahabharata, asked about the importance of Apara
Ekadashi during one of his resting periods.
According to Lord Krishna, the festival is chiefly
celebrated in the dominant Hindu communities
during which they seek perfect solution so that their
past sins could get washed off successfully. This
is the exact reason why people in large numbers
maintain fast on the auspicious day. Perhaps, it is
the Apara Ekadashi festival alone that helps people
in realizing more benefits on an overall.
Rituals of Apara Ekadashi
The rituals observed on this day include
fasting, pujas and yagya. The rituals of this day
are given very high importance and are performed
with utmost sincerity. It is said that a person who
observes this day honestly gets as blessed as
someone who has done innumerable good acts and
observed various religious acts. Madhya Pradesh
is a state of diversities. Many festivals are
celebrated here with grand fervor and Apara
Ekadashi is one of them. It is of equal importance
to every person in the state despite of their caste
and the state they come from.

,dkn'k;qioklL;dykaukjgafr'kksM'khezAA
'Not Even Thousand Ashtamedha Yogas or
Hundred Raj Suya Yogas would match the fast on
a Ekadashi Day'
Ekadashi means 11, in Sanskrit and is the
name of the 11th day of the month in a Sanatan
Calendar. In the Sanatan Calendar, a month is
actually divided into two parts of 15 days and
hence, a month has practically 2 ekadashis.
Ekadashis are of very high importance in the Hindu
culture and one can easily find a festival or the
other being observed on this day. Apara or Achala
Ekadashi is one such day that is observed on the
Ekadashi of the second half of the month of Jeshtha.
Of all the Ekadashi's observed in a year, Apara
Ekadashi is considered the most glorious one. It is
believed that a person who fasts on this day washes
away all his sins and attains Moksha. With just one
fast on this day, a person frees himself of all the
wrong doings and short falls of the past. In North
India, this day is celebrated with grandeur and
almost everyone tries to observe a fast. This day is
given high importance and people visit temples in
huge numbers to pray for forgiveness.
Observed in the month of Jyeshtha, this
festival is generally observed in the month of May
or June all over the country. This festival goes by
many names across the nation like Achala
Ekadashi, Bhadrakali Ekadashi (Punjab, Haryana
and Kashmir), Vaishakh Vadi Ekadashi and
Jalkrida Ekadashi (Orissa). In Madhya Pradesh,
it is called Apara Ekadashi a day that washes away
all the sins and reserves a place in Heaven.
Legends of Apara Ekadashi
There are many tales associates with Achala
Ekadashi.
Here are a few of them:
The Tale of Lord Trivikrama
Lord Trivikrama is an incarnation of Lord
Vishnu who taught a fitting lesson to King Bali.

,LVkseSfVDl

Attaining salvation is best possible for all

those who believe in Lord Vishnu and offer their
selfless prayers to God. Reflecting the name
"Apara" term in the festival, it is believed that
people who observe fast will be able to realize
unlimited benefits in exactly the same way as it is
expected. Remaining uneaten as part of the fasting
ritual is something that is regarded as the most
effective step from your end.

12 Tips to Keep Cool This Summer

What occurs in the macrocosm is replicated
in the microcosm. Beyond a doubt, living beings
are highly influenced by turmoil, munificence or
mundane happenings of nature. Water, noise, air
pollution or natural changes in weather, the
circadian rhythm or even interaction and habits of
family members all impact us in numerous ways.
Climate, with other factors, dictates people's
preferences. For example, when the weather is hot,
people prefer staying in parks, visiting beaches, or
spending time in cool atmosphere or air
conditioned vehicles or rooms. Clearly, weather
sends us signals to improvise our lifestyle and
dietary inclinations.
And Ayurveda lays down elaborate
description of seasonal and daily routine, which,
when adopted, enables us to achieve perfect health,
prevent diseases and also to enjoy life to the utmost.
According to fundamental principles of
Ayurveda, our eating habits and daily routine
should flow with the season. By regularly adjusting
our lifestyle and eating habits, we can live in
harmony with the cycles of nature. Here are 12
Ayurvedic tips to help you keep in balance this
summer:
1. Avoid heating spices like cayenne, garlic,
chilies and black pepper in summer. Choose
cooling herbs instead such as fennel, cardamom
and saffron in your preparations.
2. Avoid hot, spicy and greasy food in
summer, as they will increase the heat in your body
and make you feel hotter. Add calm and cooling
foods in your diet such as cucumber, broccoli,
asparagus, celery, okra, cabbage, snow peas,
summer squash, and cilantro.
3. Avoid drinking ice-cold carbonated drinks,
flavored juices and milk-based fruit smoothies as
it disrupts the digestion process and creates toxins
in the body leading to low immunity.

4. Avoid sour fruits instead eat ripe, juicy

sweet fruits such as apples, pears, peaches,
apricots, plums, cherries, mangoes, and guava.
Remember not to eat fruits within 30 minutes of
consuming any other food.
5. Summer is the best time to enjoy the
fresh coconut water from young coconuts. These
are great cooling drinks that can beat the summer
heat.
6. Make fresh limeade at home by adding
raw sugar and a pinch of rock salt (saindhav namak)
to fresh lime-juice. Avoid drinking store-bought
lemonade as it may contain artificial colors and
preservatives.
7. Avoid direct sunlight and excessive
activity during the hottest part of the day as it can
be draining. If you prefer biking and running, try
to save it for the early morning and evening when
the temperature is slightly cooler.
8. Drink room temperature water everyday
to stay hydrated. You can add a sprig of fresh mint
to the water or a teaspoon of pure organic rose
water. Try copper water this summer.
9. Wear loose-fitting, light cotton clothes
to protect your skin. The best colors to wear in hot
summer are the colors that reflect the sunlight, such
as whites, grey, blues and greens. Avoid red, black,
dark yellow and orange shades of clothes in
summer as they tend to absorb and retain the heat.
10. Massage your skin with unrefined
coconut water 20 minutes prior to shower in the
morning. This classic remedy is as cooling as it is
rejuvenating.
11. Avoid prolonged sitting in front of
computers and T.V. at night before going to bed.
Sleep is the time when our mind and body goes
through repairs and rejuvenation.
12. Listen to soothing sounds of water or
take moonlight walks in the evening. It will be both
relaxing and soothing for the mind and body.

Management of Back Pain

Swami Bhaktipoornananda Saraswati

Why is it that 80% of the population suffer

back pain at some time in their lives, many for a
protracted period of time? Pain is like the warning
lights on the dashboard of our car. When they light
up, we investigate what is wrong and top up the
oil, water, etc. Otherwise we'll wreck the car!
Similarly, with the body it's no good wishing away
the pain or just taking pain killers ad infinitum,
that's like removing the bulb from the warning light.
We need to discover the reasons for the pain.
PAIN AND INJURY
To my knowledge there is one major source
of back pain and that is injury, and not necessarily
the obvious injury resulting from falls, lifting,
sports, etc. Even though we may not know it, many
of us have injured our backs at some time in the
past; strains and sprains can occur without our
knowing that anything has happened. These small
injuries stop the spine from moving properly, which
leads to pain and inflammation at the site of the
injured tissues.
Pain in the back is always associated with a
part that is not moving properly. It can be very
difficult to pinpoint because a small area of
inflammation can have so many sensitive areas
around it. Toxins are produced when there is
inflammation. This affects surrounding tissues and
we get a wide area of pain experience.

,LVkseSfVDl

Back pain is so common because of our

lifestyle and the way we use (or don't use) our
bodies. We make very limited use of the back in
our normal day to day life and also tend to adopt
poor posture habits which often begin at school
(where we sit slumped at a desk) or in the home
(where we sit back in soft easy chairs with the spine
in a forward curve). If we consider a small joint of
the spine (Figure 1), it consists of facet joints on
each side of the spine and a disc separating the
adjacent vertebrae by sitting between the two
vertebral bodies and cushioning them. This gap
between the two vertebral bodies is designed to
take weight. In a slumped posture, instead of the
weight passing through these discs there is pressure
on the facet joints of the spine which are not
designed to be weight bearing. Gradually this can
lead to localized pain at these joints and
surrounding tissues, producing swelling from the
loss of fluids from minute tears. This clears away
in the healing process but leaves a residual area of
scarring, hardened tissues and weakness.
However, not all back pain is from facet joints,
it can come from soft tissues (tendons, cartilage,
ligaments) and surrounding muscles and from the
nerves as they emerge from the spinal column.
INFLEXIBILITY
A healthy spine is flexible and absorbs the
impact of falling and lifting. Through bad habits
our joints become inflexible and less able to
respond to sudden movement or jarring. When we
jar the back or move beyond our habitual range of
movements suddenly, we damage the soft tissue of
the spine.
Discs are surrounded by a lattice of crisscrossing ligaments that pass from one vertebra to
the next. When we damage these tissues, they
harden and are less able to move. Because of the
limited movement of a joint in the spine, the joints
above and below have to move more to
compensate, resulting in increased wear and tear.
So we then have a joint that has lost some of its
elasticity and cushioning and is more prone to
injury.
To be contd...............
