Visualization Worship
Brief:
To find an experiencial design solution to enhance devotional practice of
Hinduism.
Introduction:
BHAKTIYOGA (loving devotion), is the name of the most recommended
form of devotion to God in Hinduism. The most signicant practice within
Bhakti is Rupadhyana, MENTAL VISUALISATION of the divine names,
forms, attributes, pastimes and associates of the Supreme Lord leading
to the deepest states of meditation. A survey conducted within the Hindu
communities of Wellington showed that devotees have most difficulty in
connecting and visualizing God (Graph 1), and reaching the seventh, eighth
and nineth forms of devotion in Bhaktiyoga (Diagram 2). The problem is due
to the devotees lack of knowledge of Bhaktiyoga – specifically Rupadhyana
which assists all nine levels of devotion and leads to higher states of devotion.

Aim:
To find a design solution to enhance devotional practice of Hinduism by using
experiential design to educate devotees about Rupadhyana - visualization
and enhance the practice of Hinduism. The solution should also teach
key characteristics of Bhaktiyoga, such as the third one in Diagram 1 –
considering God to be your beloved, son, friend, master and king, so that
devotees can strengthen their loving connection, and achieve their ultimate
aim of life, attaining eternal Divine Bliss - God.
Intended outcome:
The design solution should be engaging, attractive, immersive & evoke loving
emotions to increase the emotive connection felt by the Hindu devotees
when experiencing it. It should also inroduce and aid the practice of mental
visualisation of the Hindu Gods. Through the experience the devotee should
also be able to learn the main characteristics of Bhaktiyoga (Diagram 1).
