Carbondale is Southern Illinois epicenter for live music,

Wine

Since 1982, southern Illinois has paved the way


for the now-thriving Illinois wine industry.
The area in and around Carbondale has
developed a strong reputation for outstanding
locally made wines, beers and spirits since
the first wineries were opened here after
Prohibition ended. Carbondale offers visiting
connoisseurs an outstanding taste of exquisite
locally made wine, beer, brandy, whiskey,

bourbon, rum and moonshine through our


growing network of local craft breweries,
wineries and a distillery.
Southern Illinois wine culture has an Old
World feeling, with passionate, informed and
experienced winemakers and grape growers
developing the highest quality of grapes and
finished wines. Wine is part of every day life
hereit brings people together.
Monte Alegre Winery
A top quality wine tasting experience awaits
visitors at Monte Alegre Winery, located just

minutes from downtown Carbondale. A cozy


tasting room overlooks the winery operations,
so visitors can view the production process
in action. The wine selection is extensive,
including a handful of ports that are aged to
perfection. Individualized tasting sessions are
offered to truly experience Southern Illinois
wine culture.

Scratch Brewing Co.


This brewery focuses on farmhouse and other
craft beer styles brewed with home-grown and
local ingredients. The brewery has a restaurant
and a rotating selection of unique brews including
nettle, elderberry, ginger, dandelion, maple sap
and more. It is located in nearby Ava and just
five miles from the Shawnee National Forest.

Shawnee Hills Wine Trail


The Shawnee Hills Wine Trail extends from
Carbondale throughout Southern Illinois with
twelve wineries with several offering awardwinning wines -- dotting the gently rolling
countryside. Multiple limo, bus and shuttle
services are available for individuals and
groups to enjoy these wineries safely.

Von Jakob Winery and Brewery


This combination winery and brewery offers an
extensive range of exceptional local wines and
beers for sale. Von Jakob offers beer and wine
tasting. Located just minutes from Carbondale
in Alto Pass, Von Jakob offers panoramic
views of the winerys orchards and vineyards
with a picturesque backdrop ofthe Shawnee
National Forest.

Craft Beer and Spirits

Microbreweries and distilleries have grown


to become an important and defining quality
of Carbondales reputation. There are four
microbreweries in and around the Carbondale
area whose products have tastes rivaling many
fine German beers. These microbreweries offer
a range of tasting experiences, and some offer
tours, food and wine, while our distillery offers
visitors the opportunity to help bottle their
product by hand.

Big Muddy Brewing


Big Muddy produces popular handcrafted beer
in nearby Murphysboro that can be found in
bars, restaurants and liquor stores throughout
Southern Illinois. Big Muddy Brewing typically
offers facility tours and beer tastings on
Saturdays. Information regarding their brews
and tour schedules can be found on their website.
Brews Brothers Taproom
Brews Brothers provides the best of what the
region has to offer in terms of local beer, wine
and spirits. Located in historic downtown
Murphysboro, Brews Brothers is a friendly,
casual, pub style atmosphere featuring rustic
barn wood accents, high ceilings and rough-hewn
floors in a building that is over 100 years old.
Grand River Spirits
This is Southern Illinois first distillery, and it
is famous for its Red Eye Baby Whiskey, Red
Eye Pie, and Red Eye Original Moonshine,
all of which were awarded bronze medals in
the American Craft Distillery Associations
national spirits competition for local whiskey.

All ingredients used are from Southern Illinois.


Tastings and tours are available, and visitors are
welcome to participate in the bottling process,
which is a local celebration where friends get
together and bottle each product by hand.

Carbondale is blessed to be surrounded by a


national forest, a national wildlife refuge, a
state park, large lakes and scenic byways that

has nine nature preserves.
Every imaginable form of outdoor fun is
available to the outdoor lover, ranging from
quiet hiking, backpacking, picnicking, camping,
canoeing and kayaking to the more rigorous
cycling, swimming, rock climbing hunting, zip
lining and water sports. The Shawnee Bluffs
Canopy Tour is Illinois first entirely tree-based,
eco-friendly zip line canopy tour. Visitors can
experience the flora, fauna, geology and history
of the area in an adrenaline-filled adventure
and educational experience.

that rivals the epic beauty of the Ozarks, the

Rugged Shawnee National Forest
The only national forest in Illinois, the
Shawnee National Forest offers outdoors
enthusiasts a wide variety of opportunities and
diverse landscapes. Its rolling landscape and
rugged bluffs are home to seven wilderness
areas and more than 1,250 miles of roads and
trails for cycling, mountain biking, hiking and
other activities.

Giant City State Park gets its


name from unique Makanda
sandstone features that
have been cut by water for
centuries to create narrow
streets between stone
buildings giving rise to
the sense that the area is a
city populated by giants.

Majestic Little Grand Canyon


Over time, erosion has carved this deep box
canyon exposing majestic bluffs. A cool and
lush bottomland habitat thrives on the canyon
floor. Along the upper portions of the trail
visitors encounter expansive views of the
colorful cliffs, the Big Muddy River and the
Mississippi River floodplain. The canyon floor
showcases seasonal waterfalls, large sandstone
overhangs and towering beech and sycamore
trees. A 3.6-mile loop trail traverses the area.
Peaceful Crab Orchard National
Wildlife Refuge
On the outskirts of Carbondale lies this 44,000
acre outdoor paradise visited by more than
one million people annually. Three large
lakes Crab Orchard, Little Grassy and Devils
Kitchen and an extensive network of nature
trails provide outstanding venues for wildlife
watching, hiking, photography, swimming and
fishing. Observing the wintering Canada geese
is a popular attraction.

Scenic Giant City State Park


Nestled in the Shawnee National Forest just
outside Carbondale, Giant City State Park
has massive sandstone bluffs and a landscape
clothed in lush fern, moss, large flowering
mints, hundreds of species of wild flowers
and more than 75 varieties of towering trees.
Visitors can enjoy picturesque natural wonders
along Giant Citys hiking trails, and rock
climbing and rappelling are popular in two
locations. Horseback riding enthusiasts will
find a 12-mile loop trail, and visitors without
horses can join a trail ride at Giant City Stables.

Cedar Lake and Cove Hollow Trail
This popular Out and Back trail is eight miles
long with three faces including an intermediate
eastern half, a fairly mellow western half and
Cove Hollow, a more technical extension.
Red Cedar Mountain Bike Trail
This single track loop is 13 miles long and has
200 feet of elevation change. The terrain is
steep and technical.
Quiet Nature Preserves, Parks and Lakes
Carbondale appreciates all things outdoors,
and nowhere is that more evident than in
our network of nine nature preserves, ten
parks and three lakes. Whether catching
some rays at Cedar Lake Beach, paddling
across the beautiful Kinkaid Lake, picnicking
in Evergreen Park or hiking the William
Marberry Arboretum Trail, there are plenty of
ways for visitors to promote a healthy lifestyle and
enjoy nature in scenic venues within the City.

Cedar Lake
This 1750-acre lake has over 30 miles of scenic
shoreline, a public swimming beach and a
hiking trail network that stretches to 15 miles.
With a limit of 10-hp, fishermen can enjoy the
vast calm waters free of overcrowded fishing spots.

An impressive wood fire oven imported from
Italy makes the artisan pizza a highlight at
this funky establishment that also dishes up
delicious pasta. Considered a great place to
socialize by locals.

can experience our rich musical culture in
many different forms and venues. From
blues, rock and Motown to country, folk and
full symphony orchestra, music abounds in

Some of the biggest names in rock music have
performed or gotten their start here, and today
our live music venues carry on that tradition
seven nights a week and in our year-round
schedule of music festivals.
Our concert venues include 100-year-old
movie houses, outdoor pavilions, orchestral
halls, coffee houses and taverns. A large
network of local musicians performs
everything from intimate acoustic sets and
open mic nights to community concerts and
orchestra presentations. A musical cornucopia

Sunset Concert Series


Free evening performances of rock, blues,
bluegrass, funk, soul and other music by
groups from around the country take place
every Thursday throughout the summer on the
SIU campus and in Turley Park. Bring a lawn

Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra
TheSouthern Illinois Symphony
Orchestra(SISO), composed of faculty and
students of Southern Illinois University

professionals, presents live orchestral music
-- including its annual Southern Illinois Music

Vibrant Arts Scene


Carbondale has a flourishing arts scene, thanks
to our funky college town atmosphere and a
growing community of talented artists and
poets. Home to several museums, theatrical
groups, independent film festivals and
boutique galleries, downtown Carbondale

Locally crafted arts and handmade jewelry are

Big Muddy Film Festival
This annual event showcases the works of
emerging and established filmmakers from
all over the world. It has become one of the
nations best-respected, wholly independent
and community-focused film festivals, and
offers visitors education workshops and the
chance to meet filmmakers.
Varsity Center for the Arts
First opened as a movie theater in 1940 with
1,100 seats, this downtown Carbondale iconic

McLeod Theater
This theater comes to life every summer with
the McLeod Summer Playhouse, a series of
performances of Americas favorite musicals

Southern Illinois University Department of

Encounter Rich History and Museums


Carbondale was originally founded as a
railroad town in the 1850s and has a rich and
colorful history as a mercantile and mining
center. Today the community is full of well
preserved historical places and events for
visitors to experience its cultural past.
Old Train Depot Museum
The Old Train Depot Museum is an iconic
building that showcases Carbondales history
as a mining and transportation center for coal.
The Old Train Passenger Depot, built in 1903,
today serves as the museums home. Visitors
can learn about Carbondales history through
the Museums significant collection of artifacts,
ring the bell of an original train car and take
home a souvenir.
Stonefort
There are several sites with well preserved
relics left behind by Native Americans near
Carbondale, including the Stonefort at Giant
City State Park and the rock art carved at
Fountain Bluff and Piney Creek Ravine.

Logan Museum and Woodlawn Cemetery


Discover the Civil War general who started the
nations Memorial Day holiday tradition. The
General John A. Logan Museum celebrates
one of the most noteworthy nineteenth
century Americans. Among his legacies are
modern veterans benefits and his advocacy of
equality for African Americans and women.
Woodlawn Cemetery was the site of the first
Memorial Day service in 1886, a tradition
which continues today.
African-American Museum and Settlements
Visit the African-American Museum to
learn about local African-American history
and see some of the historic settlements of
former slaves who came here after winning
their freedom in the Civil War. The Museum
is dedicated to identifying, preserving and
portraying the outstanding achievements of
local African American citizens.
Southern Illinois University Museum
Located in Fanner Hall on the campus of
Southern Illinois University, The University
Museum features historical artifacts and
exhibits from around the world, coupled with
world class art. The museum formally opened
to the public in 1874, but has been collecting
artifacts since before 1871.

Outside The Box Music Festival


Outside the Box is an exceptional new music
festival and concert series now in its 9th year.
Composers and performers of international
acclaim join forces with Southern Illinois
finest musicians and composers to create a
week long atmosphere of exciting and engaging
contemporary concert music. Daily seminars,
discussions and presentations culminate in
fantastic nightly performances. All events are
free and open to the public. Not to be missed!

Memorial Day at Woodlawn Cemetery


This Civil War Historical Landmark, located
in the center of Carbondale, is the official
site to one of the nations first Memorial
Day observations. Learn about the holidays
originator, General John A. Logan, and
participate in one of the enduring Memorial
Day services.
Carbondale Classic
This annual event features teams of four
competing in a putt-putt tournament for cash
and prizes at participating restaurants and bars.

Cardboard Boat Regatta


Since 1974, thousands of participants
and spectators have regaled this
Southern Illinois University original
event. Putting their engineering
and creativity skills to the test,
participants design and build a
human sized boat made only of
cardboard capable of completing
a minimum of three trips around
a 200-yard course. Contestants
can walk away with a number of

One of Carbondales most beloved summer
traditions, the Summer Sunset Concert
