History:
BuhlulLodiestablishedtheLodhiDynastyandheruledfrom
14511526.HewaspreviouslythegovernorofSarhind(in
Punjab),undertheSultanofDelhiAlauddinAlam,oftheSaiyid
Dynasty(14141451).DuetotheweakpositionoftheSaiyid
dynasty,BuhlulLodhitookadvantage,hefirstoccupiedthe
provinceofPunjabandlateron,capturedDelhiandbecamethe
SultanofDelhionApril19,1451underthetitleofSultanAbul
MuzzaffarBuhlulShahGhazi.
Duringhisrulethoughtherewerenumerousattemptsto
destabilizetheempire,BuhlulmanagedtostandbytheLodhis.
Hecapturedanumberofnearbystates.Thiswastheonly
AfghandynastytoruleovertheDelhiSultanate,withtheexceptionofSherShahSuri.
BuhlulKhanseizedthethroneandmanagedthekingdomwithoutmuchresistance
fromthethenruler,AlamShah.BuhlulKhansterritorywasspreadacrossJaunpur,
Gwalior&UttarPradesh.In1486,heappointedhiseldestsonBarbakShahastheViceroyofJaunpur.
SikandarLodi
DuetothedeathofBuhlulLodhiinJuly1489,hissonNizamKhansucceededhim,underthetitleSikandarShah.Heturnedouttobethe
mostcapableruleroftheLodhiDynasty.SikandarShahestablishedafairsystemofadministration&foundedthehistoricalcityofAgra.
HisempireextendedfromPunjabtoBiharandhealsosignedatreatywiththerulerofBengal,AlauddinHussainShah.SikandarShahwas
theonewhofoundedanewtownwherethemoderndayAgrastandsandwasknowntobeakindandgenerousrulerwhocaredforhis
subjects.

Sikandar'sdeathemergedthefightforsuccessionbetweenhissons,whichresultedinthedeclineofruleofthe
Lodhidynasty.IbrahimLodhi,sonofSikander,wasthelastSultanoftheLodhiDynasty.ZahiruddinBabur,the
MughalrulerfromCentralAsia,attackedIndiaanddefeatedIbrahiminthefirstbattleofPanipatonApril21,
1526.
AsthetimecameforIbrahimtoascendthethroneofLodhiDynasty,thepoliticalstructureintheDynastyhad
dissolvedduetoabandonedtraderoutesanddepletedthetreasury.
TheDeccanwasacoastaltraderoute,butinthelate15thcenturythesupplylinescollapsed.Thedeclineand
failureofspecifictraderouteresultedincuttingoffsuppliesfromthecoasttotheinterior,wheretheLodiEmpire
resided.TheDynastywasnotinapositiontoprotectitselffromthewarfareifitwouldbreakoutonthetraderoute
roadstherefore,thetraderouteswherenotutilisedandthustheirtradedeclined,sofurtherdidtheirtreasury
leavingthemvulnerabletointernalpoliticalproblems.

OnemoreproblemIbrahimhadwhentryingtoascendthethroneasthenextLodiemperorwasdue
totheAfghanchiefs.ThechiefsdidnotlikeSultanIbrahim,sotheydividedtheLodiEmpireand
gaveIbrahim'solderbrother,JalaluddintheareaintheeastatJaunpurandgaveIbrahimtheareain
thewest,Delhi.Despitethissituation,SultanIbrahimbeingthemilitaryman,hegatheredenough
militarysupportandkilledhisbrotherandreunitedthekingdombytheendofthatsameyearin
1517.

LaterIbrahimLodhiarrestedAfghannobleswhoopposedhim.TheAfghannobleswereloyaltotheGovernorofBihar,DariyaKhanas
theywantedhimtoruleDelhi,notSultanIbrahim.
PeoplewhotriedtotakeovertheLodithronewereextremelycommonduringSultanIbrahim'stime.Duetothelackofthelawof
succession,Ibrahimwasforcedtoputdownagreatgroupoftheseambitiousmen.IbrahimLodhis'ownuncle,AlamKhan,workingoffhis
ownambitions,betrayedIbrahimbecausehewantedtoruleDelhi.AlamKhandecidedtoplacehisloyaltytotheMughalemperor,Babur.
ThedefeatofIbrahimendedtheLodhiDynastyandmarkedthebeginningofMughalruleinIndia.Dueto
thedemandsofthenobles,IbrahimLodhi'syoungerbrotherJalalKhanwasgivenasmallshareofthe
kingdomandwascrownedthekingofJaunpur.Later,Ibrahim'smenassassinatedhimsoonandthe
kingdomcamebacktoIbrahimLodhi.Hewasknowntobeaverysternrulerandwasnotlikedmuchby
hissubjects.TotakerevengeoftheinsultsdonebyIbrahim,thegovernorofLahoreDaulatKhanLodhi
askedtherulerofKabul,Baburtoinvadethekingdom.HewasdefeatedinabattlewithBaburfoundedthe
MughaldynastyinIndia.ThedeathofIbrahimLodhi,madetheendofLodhidynasty.
LodiGardensisaparkinDelhispreadover90acresithasMohammedShah'sTomb,SikanderLodi'sTombarchitecturalworksofthe15th
centurywhichruledmuchofNorthernIndiaduringthe16thcenturyandthesiteisnowprotectedbyArcheologicalSurveyofIndia(ASI).
ThegardensaresituatedbetweenKhanMarketandSafdarjung'sTombonLodiRoad.Itisbeautifulandsereneandisahotspotformorning
walksfortheDelhiites.
