Firefighting
System
Scope:
It covers the fragments of firefighting room, operation of firefighting system and working of fire
detection system. Lastly some recommendations are also listed.

Fire Fighting Room:

Firefighting room is based on two firefighting engines along with a jockey pump, foam pump,
foam tank and fire water tank. We can operate firefighting system for tank yard electrically and
manually from this room.

Fire Fighting Engines:

Engines are of Cummins Company. Both engines provide 2000gpm water at 10 bar pressure.
First engine operate at 4.5 bar and second at 4 bar. Every engine have electrical and
Mechanical panel. We can operate engines manually and automatically by Electrical panel but
currently we are operating it manually. Mechanical panel shows temperature, RPM and fuel
level of engines.

Jockey Pump:
It is used to maintain pressure in case of minor leakage in firefighting line. It functions at 5 bar
and stop at 7.5 bar. Current it is operating automatically.

Foam Tank:
The capacity of foam tank is 10,000 ltr and the type of fluid is AFFF. 3 % AFFF and 97% water is
mixed, after that it used for firefighting where foam water extinguishing is required.

Fire Water Tank:

Total capacity of firefighting water tank is 720 m3. Suggested level to be maintained in the tank
is 80%.

Fire Fighting Systems:

Following systems are used for firefighting at plant.

Fire Hydrant:
Standard followed for this system is NFPA 24. Fire Cabinet and Hydrants are around tank yard,
boiler area, fuel decanting area, engine hall and FT building. Total number of cabinets and
hydrants are 34. Every cabinet includes one call point. If we push the call point then a fire signal
is generated at fire panel and control room.

Indoor Fire Cabinets:

They are 2 cabinets located in admin building. One is at ground floor and the other is at first
floor.

Indoor & Outdoor Foam Tanks:

Total numbers of indoor & outdoor tanks are 10 that are used for engine hall, work shop and
store. 4 are located in engine hall Phase-I and 4 in Phase-II. The other 2 are for workshop and
store. The capacity of foam tank is 200 ltr.

Fire Extinguishers:
Standard followed for this system is NFPA 10. Fire extinguishers are around tank yard, control
room, washing room, chemical room, fuel decanting area, engine hall, FT building and offices.
Total numbers of fire extinguishers are 104. Varies types available on plant are water, CO2,
DCP, foam and Halotron and they range from 5 to 150 ltr.

Foam Water System:

Standard followed for this system is NFPA 11. This system is used at HFO tanks, diesel tank
and decanting area. We have used this system at HFO tanks and diesel tank but not in
decanting area.

Foam Monitor Guns:

Eight foam monitor guns are on every corner and center of tank yard. It release through monitor
gun wall and foam water nozzle walls. The maximum throw is 82 meter and the height is 47
meter.

Water Deluge System:

Standard followed for this system is NFPA 13 and this system is for switch yard and firefighting
room. For switch yard we can operate it manually and electronically. This system works when
the deluge valve is kept closed by a pressurized upper valve chamber. The pressure is
maintained through a restriction on the service side. The upper chamber is also connected to
the release line. When the pressure is released from the upper chamber through the release
line, the clapper is lifted by the water pressure under the clapper. Waters floods the system and
rings alarm.

Foam Water Deluge System:

Standard followed for this system is NFPA 16 and this system is for engine hall and FT building
that we can operate both manually and electronically. This system works when the deluge valve
is kept closed by a pressurized upper valve chamber. The pressure is maintained through a
restriction on the service side. The upper chamber is also connected to the release line. When
the pressure is released from the upper chamber through the release line, the clapper is lifted
by the foam water pressure under the clapper. Foam waters floods the system and rings alarm.

CO2 System:
Standard followed for this system is NFPA 12 and the system is installed in MV & LV room,
battery room, trench area and in the basement of control room, but still testing is required for
CO2 system. Total 54 cylinders in CO2 room and every cylinder have 45 Kg capacity.

Fire Detection System

Following are the points that are used for fire detection

Sprinkler system
Standard followed for this system is NFPA 16 and the system is installed in switch yard, engine
hall and in firefighting house. Sprinklers are available with different temperature bulbs and
colors.
1. Transformer area:
Temperature 68, with red sprinkler
2. Firefighting house:
Temperature 79, with yellow sprinkler
3. Engines:

Temperature 93, with green sprinkler
4. Turbo charger:
Temperature 141, with blue sprinkler

Working:
If any sprinkler detects fire then it burst due to high temperature. Foam water will discharge
through an open spray nozzle attached with every sprinkler.

Manual foam water open sprinkler system:

Standard followed for this system is NFPA 16 and the system is installed in fuel decanting area.
Detection of fire in this area is visual. In this area open sprinkler nozzle is installed for
firefighting. These open nozzles release foam water that are operated by both manual and
electronic valves.

Smoke detectors:
Smoke detectors are installed at following locations,

1. Basement and trench area:

Basement have 6 smoke detectors

Trench 1 have 10 smoke detectors
Trench 2 have 4 smoke detectors
Trench 3 have 4 smoke detectors
Trench 4 have 10 smoke detectors

2. MV, LV and battery Room:

MV room have 8 smoke detectors

LV room have 4 smoke detectors
Battery room have 2 smoke detectors

3. Firefighting, FT & WT house:

Firefighting have 2 smoke detectors

Fuel treatment have 6 smoke detectors
Water treatment hose have 1 smoke detector

4. Admin building, work shop and store:

Admin building have 73 smoke detectors

Workshop building have 8 smoke detectors
Store have 5 smoke detectors

Multi detectors:
Total 53 multi detectors are only installed in engine hall. Multi detector has two detection
systems

Panel:
Following are the panels that are used to check the status of system

Fire Alarm Panel:

If fire is detected in effected area then fire detection system send a signal to fire alarm panel
and then rings the alarm. Healthy and faulty condition of detection system is also shown on fire
alarm panel.

CO2 Panel:
If fire is detected in effected area then fire detection system send a signal to CO2 panel and then
rings the alarm. Healthy and faulty condition of detection system is also shown on CO2 panel.
