Details

edilon)(sedra HSTS offers a significant


reduction in construction height, which made
the tunnel suitable for a catenary system. Can
be installed both prefab and in-situ.

Target

Electrification and refurbishment of tunnel by


replacing old ballasted track by edilon)(sedra
HSTS. Vertical gauge improvement by
approximately 40 cm in order to apply postum
catenary system. Accessibility for emergency
vehicles. Short construction period.

In December 1992 edilon)(sedra


installed two ERS (Embedded Rail
System) diamond crossings in the
Channel Tunnel, between the UK and
France. Eurotunnel Plc chose
edilon)(sedra ERS because of the low
maintenance aspect and highest degree
of serviceability and availability.
Moreover this system prevents air
leakage under the fire blocking doors,
from one tunnel into the other.
Furthermore it offers good accessibility
for emergency vehicles in case of a fire.
The edilon)(sedra ERS diamond
crossings survived a mayor fire in the
tunnel in 1996 and still are in good
condition. After being 18 years in service
this diamond crossing was subject for
being renewed in a major overhaul.

Located in the valley, the tunnel of Montets


has a double feature, unique in France and
elsewhere: It has been converted to a
railway tunnel which can also be used by
automobiles trucks/cars when the mountain
pass Col des Montets is closed to traffic
due to winter weather conditions. This
operation is part of a modernization which
should contribute modal shift in the sensitive
Alpine valley.
edilon)(sedra ERS (Embedded Rail System)
has changed the concept of discretely
supported rails by means of sleepers or
blocks, into continuously supported rails.
By virtue of the position-stable integration of
the rails into a concrete or steel channel
structure, track loads have a negligible
effect on track gauge, position and buckling.
This homogeneous elastic support is
providing the same dynamic spring and
damping behavior as e.g. ballasted track
under traffic load, but completely eliminates
the influences of individual rail seats or
sleepers.
Track loads become more evenly spread
and dynamic load amplification is getting
lower. Lateral stability and high vertical
elasticity offer a high degree of protection
against corrugation avoiding the necessity
for a regular rail grinding.

The aim of the new rail link was to


provide a direct service between the
airport and Chamartin station in
Madrid, which has been redeveloped
as the terminal of the new MadridValladolid high-speed line, providing
direct connections from the airport to
RENFE's national intercity network.
The use of edilon)(sedra ERS makes
the tunnel accessible for normal
vehicles. Also passengers can
evacuate the tunnel easily in case of
emergency because of the flat floor
surface.
