Problems
1. Assuming even parity, find the parity bit for each of the following data units.
a. 1001011
b. 0001100
c. 1000000
d. 1110111
2. Given the dataword 1010011110 and the divisor 10111,
a. Show the generation of the codeword at the sender site (using binary division)
b. Show the checking of the codeword at the receiver site (assume no error)
3. For P=110011 and M=11100011, find the CRC
4. A sender sends a series of packets to the same destination using 5-bit sequence
numbers. If the sequence number starts with 0, what is the sequence number after
sending 100 packets?
5. Using 5-bit sequence numbers, what is the maximum size of the send and receive
windows for each of the following protocols?
a. Stop-and-Wait ARQ
b. Go-Back-N ARQ
c. Selective-Repeat ARQ
6. Consider a half-duplex point-to-point link using a stop-and-wait scheme, in which
a series of messages is sent, with each message segmented into a number of
frames. Ignore errors and frame overhead.
a. What is the effect on line utilization of increasing the message size so that
fewer messages will be required? Other factors remain constant.
b. What is the effect on line utilization of increasing the number of frames for a
constant message size?
c. What is the effect on line utilization of increasing frame size?
7. Consider the use of 1000 bit frames on a 1Mbps satellite channel with a 270ms
delay. What is the maximum link utilization for
a. Stop-and-wait flow control?
b. Flow control with a window a window size of 7?
8. A channel has a data of 4kbps and a propagation delay 20ms. For what range of
frame sizes does stop-and-wait give an efficiency of at least 50%?
