Important Information about Northwest Horizons

1. Journalism Overview
Journalism is an educational class as well as a great real-world experience
Changes implemented to newspaper by Melanie Huynh-Duc, adviser:
Name of newspaper changed from Northwest Express to Northwest Horizons
Switched to full color edition
Improving website (northwesthorizons.com)
Changing format to full color, 20 page news magazine in 2016-2017

Connections to UNC and USC Schools of Journalism
3. Publishing
Production Cost: approximately $1,400 for EACH full color run (four issues 2015-2016)
Funding Sources:
Newspaper Advertising (collectively): approximately $1,100
Contribution Request at beginning of school year: approximately $1,100

4. Journalism Conferences
State
North Carolina Scholastic Media Association (NCSMA) 3rd week of June
Summer Institute: 20-hour intensive workshop designed to teach innovative
and effective ways of communicating through scholastic media
Regional
Southern Interscholastic Press Association (SIPA)
1st weekend in March
Class sessions, key note speakers, contests, quiz bowl, talent show, exhibits, awards
National
Journalism Education Association (JEA)
Nov and Apr in major US cities
Learning sessions, hands-on workshops, discussions, and career roundtables
Contests, receptions, awards convocations, critiques, and evening entertainment
5. Booster Club
Purpose: Provide funds for Journalism program (NO school or district funding)
Majority of computers donated with outdated programs
Much of equipment is student supplied with access lost after graduation
Goal: Eliminate PERSONAL funding of Journalism by adviser, Melanie Huynh-Duc
JOIN NWHBC $20 Cash or Check payable to Northwest Horizons Booster Club
Objectives: Purchase Elmo (interactive document camera) to assist with copy editing
Provide scholarship assistance to regional and state conferences
Focus: fundraisers (3-4 throughout year)

The NW Horizons Booster Club provides financial support for newspaper printing, press
association memberships, equipment and software, contest fees, and conferences charges.
Dues will be used to reduce the out-of-pocket costs for members.
