INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
This thesis project proposal is an architectural response to the need of improving
the livelihood of the people by promoting tourism of Tarangnan. The location of this
proposal is located at Tarangnan Western Samar. It is situated on the western coast
of Samar Island, to the south-east of the ancient town of Bangahon (now Gandara) and to
the north of Samar's capital Catbalogan. Tarangnan is found near the former
ancient pueblo Tinago (now Dapdap which is at the far north of Tarangnan), the first
town to be Christianized and was made a center or cabecera.
The population as of 2015 census is 24,992 people. Compared to the 2010 census
24,146 the population increased and so the demand for food, other necessities and
business is also increasing
Tarangnan has its own municipal hospital which caters primarily to health
services. It is augmented by Rural Health Unit extension workers. It has daycare centers
which also cater the needs of pre-schoolers. As of now there are two high schools and
thirty-seven elementary schools available all over Tarangnan.
Although there are already buildings that have been built (e.g. schools, stores and
markets) the people of Tarangnan demanded to have a place for their family to get
together. There is no public space where an individual or families can unwind or even
have a picnic.
The other barangays of Tarangnan are in the other islands across the town proper.
There are times when voyages or devotees from different towns of Samar, Leyte and

neighboring provinces come on a certain day to pay homage, to say novena, and to show
their love and veneration to the miraculous image of St. Francis of Assisi, the Patron
Saint of Tarangnan.
Tarangnan is a highly rural town up to now. The ways of their living are
preserved throughout time and still practiced. The natural resources are abundant. They
have virgin forests that are enjoyable to explore and mountains to climb. The highest
mountain is located at Brgy. A in which the Smart Telecommunication tower is also
erected. From the top, the beautiful view of the place and the other islands can be seen.
Tarangnan is rich in marine resources, especially the budol or jellyfish (they have a
celebration regarding this during fiesta) and dried fish in which they export to different
places because it is in demand. Coral reefs are still undamaged, fishes are abundant and
their sea is clear and clean that one can see the depth of the sea just from the view above
the surface. There are also white beaches scattered in this town that are not fully
developed but functional (e.g. Macalpi Beach, Panangatan Beach, Playa Rosario Beach,
Panapukan Beach) but were destroyed during the Bagyong Glenda and Bagyong Ruby.
On the way to the now destroyed Panapukan and Playa Rosario Beach, there are beautiful
rock formations that are mesmerizing.
This beautiful place of Tarangnan is sorrounded with bodies of water rich in
adventures waiting to be discovered and developed.

1.2 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE AND ALLIED DISCIPLINE

EASTERN VISAYAS STATE UNIVERSITY

These are the objectives of this study:
To provide establishments (building and non-building) that are needed to help
improve their livelihood and economy.
To provide a place where they can relax, bond and at the same time enjoy the
riches of nature.
To attract local tourists and foreigners to visit Tarangnan by means of
architectural design.
To provide a facility that will not just showcase the culture of Tarangnan but also
the dominance of the different water sports.
To provide different water sports and land sports for the local people and
tourists.
To provide facilities that will make it more unique than the other sports park in
the country.

1.3 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

Although Tarangnan is a place where there are many exotic places to explore, their
tourism is not that high because few people only know where this place is. The study will
attempt to answer the following questions:

What project can promote the tourism of Tarangnan without disturbing the natural

resources and preserving the rural life of the people?

How can we provide a place for playing, relaxing and promenading that is open
for everyone?

What are the different water sports and land sports that is suitable for Tarangnan?
How can the project promote health and wellness to the locals and to the tourists?
Which site can be best for the project?

1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

ECONOMIC SIGNIFICANCE
This study includes tourism that can promote the economic value of Tarangnan.
There are virgin forest to explore, mountain to climb, coral reefs and rock formations
to admire. If someone wants to escape the busy life in a city, this is the place to be.
The simple rural life of the people is refreshing. If many tourists will visit this exotic
place, there will be more businesses thus increasing the economic level of this lovely
place and then the country.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE
Since this study will involve water/land sports, business and park, it will
showcase the combination of these three factors without outshining one another. There
will be a harmonious relationship between the beauty of nature and the architectural
aspects. This study will not only build a place for people to mingle with each other but
also to a place for where one can relax and enjoy different sports.

This study may benefit the future architect/engineer because this will serve as their
reference if they wish to develop and make improvementS in the future. This will also
serve as a reference to the researchers of water sports or resorts or any related topic to

this.

1.5 SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

Based on the objectives that we proposed, these are the scope of our study:
A place where the locals and tourists can relax and enjoy the beauty of nature
and play sports at the same time.
Business establishments that will increase the economic value of the place
without disturbing the natural resources.
A facility that will showcase the culture of the place and the different sports that
can be executed in there.

The limitations are:

The business establishments that can be built in the area will not exceed 1-2
storey belonging to low rise buildings.
The water sports that will be available will be limited only.
Develop the towns natural richness but still preserve the rural life of the people
living there.
