Faith Formation Expenses

There is no direct cost for PreK-12th grade Faith Formation. As a parish, we feel it is important
to offer this opportunity for our young church to grow in understanding of their faith & relationship with God. We want to make this available to all, even those who might not otherwise be
able to afford this participation.
Faith Formation does have expenses, however. This year, we will have a giving tree in the
gathering space at the back church. Each item on the tree is something used throughout the
Faith Formation year. Please consider taking one or more tags.

Fundraising
Middle school & high school students have numerous opportunities to participate in local, deanery, & diocesan wide events. Some of these events are more costly than others. Once your
child has reached 6th grade, they can begin fundraising. Money earned through our fundraising
events is divided proportionately between those who participated. These funds are recorded on
an individual basis and can be used for future events. Please consider participating in our fundraisers, as a youth earning funds or a participant attending these functions.

Scholarships
ACTIVITIES
It is the desire of St. Mary to engage as many people in activities as possible. It is our hope that
no one has to be turned away from an activity for financial reasons. If students participate in all
the fundraising opportunities, they should earn enough to pay for most if not all the activities
for which they choose to attend. If your family has a financial need, please do not hesitate to
share this need with the Pastor or Director of Faith Formation.
GRADUATES
St. Mary offers graduating seniors an opportunity to apply for a post-secondary school scholarship. Applications are typically emailed in February with a due date in April. It is the sole responsibility of the applicant to submit ALL required components of the application and complete ALL the questions asked on the application. Any missing documents or unanswered questions will disqualify an applicant. Recipients of these scholarships are expected to be actively
engaged in their faith & parish throughout their 12 years prior.

Page 4

Absence
We strive for maximum attendance each week as well as from year to year. Growing in faith
is a life-long process and children need the consistency of attending sessions on a regular
basis to form a foundation for life-long learning. To insure the safety of our children,
attendance is taken at the beginning of class time and recorded in the parish database.
Please notify the catechist if your child/children will not be attending class. It is the
responsibility of the parent & child to gather information on what assignments need to be
completed.

Sacramental Preparation & Attendance

Sacramental Preparation for 1st Reconciliation, 1st Communion, & Confirmation is taught
outside of Sunday school classes. The process which we engage our youth is designed to
help them grow into a deeper relationship with the Trinity. We learn to love more when we
know a person more and therefore, learning about God Father, Son, & Holy Spirit and
spending time with Him, is crucial for this growth. Therefore, class attendance is required at
both Sunday school and Preparation classes.
Participation in a Sacramental prep class will only be allowed if the student is attending a
minimum of 85% of the classes in the years prior to the year the Sacrament is offered. If
registered for a sacramental class, only 2 absences are allowed. Make up work and/or
classes are expected for any absences.

End of Class Dismissal

Students in grades K-4 are required to be picked up by a parent or older sibling. Parents are
asked to wait outside of the classroom until catechist opens the door.

Books and Materials

Parents are to see that their child arrives for class with all needed materials. If books are sent
home, they must be returned each week along with any assigned work.

Weather Related Concerns

K-8 classes do not cancel for weather. Please use your best judgment. If you are unable to
attend Mass Sunday morning due to a weather emergency or natural disaster, please do not
attempt to drive into church for Faith Formation classes.
If school is dismissed early for weather related emergencies, all evening classes will be
cancelled or postponed. Sacramental preparation classes will be rescheduled.

Catechetical Sunday
Catechetical Sunday is held each year in September. The purpose of catechetical Sunday is
to commission the catechists and all the others who make it possible for a successful faith
formation program.

Commissioning will be held on September 18, 2016.

Page 5

Discipline
The educational goals, philosophy, and policies of the parish teach responsibility and selfdiscipline. This is the key to good conduct, consideration for others, and learning.
Therefore, to provide a Christian setting and a learning environment that will benefit each
person in the parish community, we follow these rules:

Code of Conduct

1. I understand that I am created by God and live in the love of the Father, Son, and
Holy Spirit.
2. I understand that God does not want or cause bad things to happen.
3. I understand that God is with me even when I am hurting or sad.
4. I understand the Circle of Grace that God gives me and others.
5. I understand that I can help stamp out bullying by not being a silent bystander.
6. I understand that speaking out and taking positive actions when bullying occurs
makes a difference.

Because of this:
1. My actions will be safe and show respect within my Circle of Grace.
2. I will act safe and show respect towards others Circle of Grace
3. My words and actions will represent truth
4. I will identify and maintain appropriate healthy boundaries
5. If there is a question that these boundaries are violated I will talk with my parents or a trusted
adult.
Follow Through:
The first time a situation occurs where discipline is necessary it shall be handled by
the classroom teacher.
The second time a situation occurs with the same student a faith formation
coordinator will be notified and will then meet with the student.
The third time a situation occurs with the same student a faith formation
coordinator will be notified, who will remove the student from the classroom
until the conclusion of class. At that time the parents will be notified and a
meeting will be scheduled for the student, parent, teacher, and faith
formation coordinator.

Drugs & Alcohol Statement

The parish recognizes the adverse effects of chemical abuse. Therefore, the parish prohibits
the use, passing, or selling of tobacco, alcohol, or drugs in any form by
students. Matches, cigarette lighters, knives, or weapons of any kind are also prohibited.
Parent(s) or guardian(s) will be notified of any violations. The student may be suspended
from the faith formation program and/or a monitoring program arranged.

Page 6

Housekeeping

At the end of each class the rooms should be returned to their original state. Please be sure that
lids are put on markers and pens, papers are put away, garbage is thrown away. Please place
the chairs on the tables.

Refreshments

Snacks will not be provided. It is up to each individual catechist if they would like to have
snacks in their room. If the catechist decides to have the class attend coffee time or a pancake
breakfast as a group, parents & guardians please remember that a free will offering is accepted.

Open Door Policy

If there is anything of concern regarding the learning environment, parish facilities, or any other
factors within our jurisdiction regarding the wellbeing of your child(ren), please contact the Director of Faith Formation. The Faith Formation office number is 641-673-0659, email is
oskystmarydre@diodav.org.

Prayer

Prayer is an integral part of our faith and should be included in each class. Students will
experience a variety of ways to pray including both formal memorized prayers and informal
spontaneous prayer. A list of formal prayers and the grade levels at which they are taught is
provided. While these prayers will be learned and reviewed in class, parents are asked to also
help children learn these prayers and make them a part of their daily lives.

Circle of Grace
Circle of Grace is a safe environment program developed by the Archdiocese of Omaha in
response to Article 12 of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. Endorsed by the United States Council of Catholic Bishops, it serves the dual purpose of educating
and forming youth about the value of positive relationships with God and others.

What is a Circle of Grace?

Philosophy

The Catholic Church teaches that God has created each of us as unique and special. Genesis 1:27 tells us that we
are created male and female in Gods image and that God saw this as very good. In that goodness, we are
meant to respect ourselves and everyone else as persons created and loved by God.
Adults assist children/young people to recognize Gods love by helping them to understand that each of us lives
and moves in a Circle of Grace. You can imagine your own Circle of Grace by putting your arms above your head
then circle down in front of your body including side to side. This circle, front to back, holds who you are in your
body and through your senses. It holds your very essence in mind, heart, soul, and sexuality.

Why is it important to help our children/young people understand the

Circle of Grace?
God intends our relationships in life to be experiences of divine love. Respectful, nurturing, loving relationships
increase our understanding of our own value and help us to love others. It is never too early to help children/young
people understand how very special they are and how relationships in life are called to be sacred. Understanding
this can help them to protect the special person they are and to be respectful of others.
Adults, as they strive to provide a safe and protective environment, hold the responsibility to help children/young
people understand and respect their own dignity and that of others. A truly safe and protective environment is one
where children/young people recognize when they are safe or unsafe and know how to bring their concerns, fears,
and uncertainties to the trusted adults in their lives.

How is the Circle of Grace Program different from other protection

programs?
According to research, one in four girls and one in seven boys will be sexually abused by age eighteen. 1 Many
protection programs focus on stranger danger, however, up to ninety percent of the time the perpetrator is a
relative, family friend or other person known to the child/young person. Circle of Grace goes beyond just
protection by helping children/young people understand the sacredness of who they are and how to seek help
through their relationships with trusted adults.

Goal of the Circle of Grace Program - Grades K-12

The goal of the Circle of Grace program is to educate and empower children and young people to actively
participate in a safe environment for themselves and others.

Objectives of the Circle of Grace Program - Grades K-12

Children/Young People will understand they are created by God and live in the love of the Father, Son, and
Holy Spirit.
Children/Young People will be able to describe the Circle of Grace which God gives each of us.
Children/Young People will be able to identify and maintain appropriate physical, emotional, spiritual, and
sexual boundaries.
Children/Young People will be able to identify all types of boundary violations.
Children/Young People will demonstrate how to take action if any boundary is threatened or violated.
www.usccb.org, or http://nccanch.acf.hhs.gov
Page 8

Through the Circle of Grace program, adults assist children and youth to recognize that
each of us lives within a Circle of Grace that holds our very essence in body, mind, heart,
soul, and sexuality. Through the Circle of Grace program, children and youth are taught to
identify and maintain appropriate physical, emotional, spiritual and sexual boundaries; recognize when boundary violations are about to occur; and demonstrate how to take action
when boundaries are threatened or violated.
Circle of Grace is clinically sound and grounded in the Catholic tradition. Its strong parent
component means parents can actively participate in their childrens education and formation.
The teachings of the Catholic Church are the foundation for all who minister in her name.
They provide basic teachings of responsibility and accountability for ones behavior as
well as requirements of chastity for all the baptized and adherence to public vows and commitments.
The Diocese of Davenport upholds the highest ethical standards for its members and personnel and strives to maintain safe environments for its people. Therefore, the Diocese has
adopted policies regarding conduct relating to sexuality and personal behavior. Acceptance, understanding and acknowledgement of receipt of these policies are required of all
persons involved in ministry in the Diocese prior to ordination, assignment, employment or
acceptance of regular voluntary services involving interaction with children or vulnerable
adults.
Copies of the policies pertaining to the Protection of Gods Children are given to each
employee and volunteer. Copies for parents and/or parishioners are available by contacting
St. Mary Faith Formation Office.

Common Prayers & Useful Information

Hail Mary

Glory Be

Hail Mary, full of grace.

Our Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to

the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is
now, and ever shall be world without end.
Amen.

Our Father
Our Father, Who art in heaven
Hallowed be Thy Name;
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Act of Contrition
My God,
I am sorry for my sins with all my heart.
In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good,
I have sinned against you
whom I should love above all things.
I firmly intend, with your help,
to do penance, to sin no more,
and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.
Our Saviour Jesus Christ suffered and died for us.
In His Name, my God, have mercy. Amen.

Apostles Creed
I believe in God,
the Father Almighty,
Creator of Heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day, He rose again.
He ascended to Heaven and is seated at the right
hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the
dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Holy Catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting. Amen.

Grace Before Meals

Bless us, Oh Lord,
and these thy gifts which
we are about to receive from thy bounty,
through Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

Nicene Creed
I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
[At the words that follow up to and including 'and became man,' all bow.]

and by the Holy Spirit

was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy,
catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one baptism
for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
