Subject:Algebra 1

Unit: Systems of Equations

Topic: Solving Systems of Equations Graphically With Technology
Lesson #3
Learning Objective(s):
Students will review how to graph equations
Students will learn how to solve system of equations graphically
Students will practice using a graphing program (such as geogebra) and using
graphing calculator.
Students will discover when there will be certain number of solutions when dealing
with lines.
New York State Learning Standard:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSA.REI.C.6 Solve systems of linear equations exactly and
approximately (e.g., with graphs), focusing on pairs of linear equations in two variables
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSA.REI.C.7 Solve a simple system consisting of a linear
equation and a quadratic equation in two variables algebraically and graphically. For
example, find the points of intersection between the line y = -3x and the circle x2 + y2 = 3.
Materials:
Smart board
Laptops (With Geogebra)
Calculators
Math Notebooks
Pens/pencils
Do Now: Solve the following systems of equations problem algebraically.
y = 2x + 3
3x + 2y = 5
Development/Procedures:
Go over any questions students might have from the homework.
Give students four minutes to complete the Do Now and go over it with them.
1

Say: Today we will learn how to solve systems of equations with using a graphing
method
Have each student open up Geogebra and create slides for b1, m1, b2,m2
Create lines with the following statistics above by creating 2 points that follow (0,b1)(1,
b1+m1), (0,b2) and (1, b2+m2)
Create point of intersection
Create text box that says solution
*NOTE* Alternate easier method you can create the lines by typing y=m1x+b1 and
y=m2x+b2 into input bar instead of creating points. However it is good for students
to see the relation of the first two points in the first method.
Have students complete worksheet Questions 1-2.
Go over the questions as a class then ask students to think about questions 3+4
Teach students how to solve systems of equations graphically with a calculator and
complete questions 1-6 with them
Have students complete Independent Practice worksheet.
Give out the homework.
Closure:
Sum up the lesson for the students.
