Triforce handwarmers

by Anni Laine
The credit for this pattern concept
belongs to my brother, who asked me
to knit him a pair of handwarmers with
the triforce pattern. I'd already
experimented with double-knit
handwarmers, but for this pair I refined
what I'd done earlier and included a
ribbed cuff.
Size: Men's large
Yarn:
Garnstudio Drops Alpaca
MC: colour 8903 (black),
1 ball (50 g), 180 m
CC: colour 8923 (yellow),
1 ball (50 g), 180 m
Needles: double-pointed needles 3 mm
Gauge: 24 st / 10 cm
Pattern notes
Double-knitting
The handwarmers are completely double-knit, and require both knit and purl stitches. Each stitch
consists of two adjacent stitches, one for each colour. This is a short description of how both knit
and purl stitches are worked in double-knitting:
knit stitch:

knit MC st with MC, holding CC in the back

purl CC st with CC, holding MC in the front

purl stitch:

purl MC st with MC, holding CC in the back

knit CC st with CC, holding MC in the front

For increases in double-knitting, simply use your preferred increase, making sure to keep the CC in
the back and MC in the front so that the yarns do not get twisted around the stitches.
For more detailed instructions on double-knitting, refer to a tutorial. The rest of the pattern assumes
double-knitting skills.
Sizing
The handwarmers are generously large the unstretched width of the palm is 12 cm. In smaller
hands they could be nicely worn on top of another pair of gloves, but for a snug fit a smaller pair
would be in order.

To make the handwarmers smaller, you can leave out stitches evenly from each needle, but with less
than a total of 32 stitches the triforce sign will not fit on the back of the hand. When sizing down,
pay attention to centering the triforce sign as appropriate for the number of stitches, and leave out
some of the thumb gusset increases.
Instructions
CO 48 stitches using both yarns and divide the stitches evenly on four DPNs, 12 stitches per needle.
Join in the round and work double-knit ribbing (K2, P2) for 6 cm.
Switch to stockinette and work 3 rounds even. On the next round, K2, M1, K2, M1 in the beginning
of the first needle to start the thumb gusset. Work 2 rounds even. In the beginning of the next row
K2, M1, K4, M1. Alternate the 2 even rounds and the increase round as set, increasing the number
of stitches between the M1 increases by two each increase round.
On the 4th increase row, start the triforce pattern as charted the coloured stitches are knit with the
other strand of yarn. The triforce is placed between the 3rd and 4th needle, so continue with the
thumb gusset on the 1st needle, knit all stitches on the 2nd, and follow the chart for the last two
needles.
End increasing for the thumb gusset when there are 14 stitches in the gusset (60 stitches in total).
After the last increase, knit two even rows. On the third row, put the gusset stitches on a holder and
CO 2 stitches to replace them. There are now 48 stitches again.
Work even continuing the triforce pattern as charted. When the work measures 18 cm, BO all
stitches on the needles.
Take the thumb stitches off the holder and pick up the two stitches that were cast on after the gusset
- 16 stitches in total for the thumb. Work even for 3 cm. Bind off.
Knit the other handwarmer as a mirror image. Weave in ends and block.
