BEACH 116TH CHIMES IN ON SEASIDE LANDING
By Katie McFadden

Last week, the Rockaway Times

broke the story of a major development coming to Beach 116th
Street. The multi-million dollar
plan calls for four 9-story buildings which will include residential units, including condos and
senior affordable housing, as
well as ground-floor retail space,
plus plenty of parking. The buildings will take over the old Beach
Club site between Beach 116th
and Beach 117th, as well as an
abandoned lot on the east side
of the Beach 116th Street beach
block. Mark Caller, the principal partner of the development
group, The Marcal Group said the
project, dubbed Seaside Landing, will completely change
116th Street.
The news sparked plenty of
reaction from residents, ranging
from cheers to jeers, but we wanted to get a sense of what those
who know the block best think.

Soon be razed

Those who have already invested their time and money into the
shopping corridor that is Beach
116th Street: the current business owners. There were a mix of
thoughts on the project, but we
found the general consensus to
be welcoming and many cannot
wait for the change.
Claudette Flatow of Cuisine by
Claudette, an immediate neighbor of the future project, whose
building was also purchased by
the Marcal Group, says bring it

on. I think its a great thing. Its

positive. It means were gonna go
higher, Flatow said, adding that
it will be good for the block and
for business. Its gonna clean up
the block and bring more people.
If you can buy an apartment on
the beach, that means you have
money, and if you have money,
you shop. Shes glad that someone is finally starting to take advantage of prime real estate on
the block. We have this building
on the beach block here for all

these years with nothing happening. This is a beach community, my God, thank God somebody came and is finally gonna
do something with it, she said,
adding that she believes having
the Marcal Group as the owners
of her own building where her
restaurant is, will be beneficial in
itself. Hes gonna improve the
building, she said.
Another nearby business owner, Liz Smith of Blue Bungalow,
also sees the project as a good
thing for the block. I'm optimistic that this residential and
business growth will excite many
new people to want to live here,
work here and open a business
here, making Beach 116th street
the prominent business corridor
it should be. I expect the goal of
this construction to be a positive
change that will put 116th street
back on the map, she said, adding that the block could use a

Electric Mermaid
Event
Is Wired For Sound
By Dan Guarino

Rockaway is often host to

intriguing and entertaining
mystical creatures both on
land and sea. Well, get ready
for a sensory rush this Saturday, August 20, as Electric
Mermaid, a grand eclectic
musical event, splashes on
stage at Fort Tilden.
Rockaway musician/singer/songwriter/producer Carly J. Deluca-Giardina, who
goes by the stage name Carcoda, has assembled a roster of electrifying acts for the
musical extravaganza. The
music starts at 6 p.m. at the
Rockaway Artists Alliances
T-7 Gallery.
The all star line up includes
Kyosi, Uruguay, Twinkles,
Leah King, Sam Fuhrer, Jess
Labus and Wolf Moon Ghost
Blizzard, and Carcoda herself.
It will be a fun night of music and performance all for a
good cause, she says, as the
artists have volunteered their
time. This showcase will help
develop our art community
here in Rockaway by supporting the Rockaway Artist Alliance.
These artists have all dedicated their time to making
our NYC community better
through art, music, and collaboration.
Carcoda recalls that music
has always been a part of her
life. From the minute I could
stand I started trying to entertain my family by singing and
dancing.
Later she started singing
and making up songs while
her father played guitar. He
also taught her how to record
music on professional equipment. She continued her musical development by learning
flute and playing in her middle school stage and marching bands. Beyond a growing
interest in music production
via computer, she began attending The American Musi-

cal and Dramatic Academy for

theater and the New School
for Creative Art Therapy.
In addition to her busy creative life, she is also currently a
NYC Special Education teacher, and has a Masters Degree
in Education.
The past couple of years I
had a band called Kicksonic
and performed throughout
New York venues including
Drom, Pianos, and Fontanas.
The last couple of months Ive
been focusing on my newer band Carcoda and The
Wildfire which incorporates
original music production,
flute, live drums, live guitar,
and vocals with harmonies. I
have also performed in many
shows as a solo artist For
the show on Saturday I will be
doing an electronic pop solo
set.
When I play live I include
the flute, keyboard, and my
voice as an instrument and
for lyrics. I sometimes use a
loop machine to add depth
while using my flute and voice
to create a song all by itself.

The news of a big development
coming to 116th Street caught
a lot of attention. (We even
had a guy call us to say he
was interested in helping on
the financing). We think the
development of the vacant
theater might actually happen
now. And we have our fingers
crossed on the dilapidated Sand
Bar. Local homeowner Esther

The Riis Park parking lot has
filled up completely a few times
this summer. Ten thousand cars
at $10 a pop. A hundred grand in
a day. Why cant NPS leave well
enough alone and NOT raise the
parking fee? It was $5 just a few
years ago. In 2012, they doubled
it to $10 and now want to increase
it to $15. Tripling the parking fee
over such a short period of time is
a bit of an outrage. Especially since
there is very little evidence the
money goes to fix up Riis. (Sandy
money is going to the Bathhouse).

The Welcome Mat Is Out

Rockaway is the kind of
place that if you announce
youre giving away free money someone will ask if the denominations are ten or twenty
dollar bills because they hate
tens. Some people dont like
the color yellow so they complain about sunny days.
And so with the news that
new condos were planned for
Beach 116th Street came some
grousing. The infrastructure
cant handle it. When they
dont sell, the city will fill
them with homeless. Were
losing that small town feel.
Blah, groan, blah.
Thankfully, the positive

reactions overwhelmed the

Debbie Downers and the online cheering drowned out the
groaning. For us, its simple.
116th Street and 115th Street
cant stay as is. Its helpful to
remember that momentum
can break either way. Garbage can attract more garbage. Blight leads to more
blight. Thats not the kind of
momentum we need.
Conversely, good stuff can
mean more good stuff. The
developer coming to 116th
has already spent some $8
million purchasing property. Others looking to invest
money will have more faith in

the area. People buying into

these properties will add to
the chorus demanding better
transportation, infrastructure
and police presence. Panhandlers dont call the Precinct
on themselves. Enough people start calling 116th home
and you can bet the 100th Precinct and elected officials will
be fully aware.
And more people will use
the ferry which is supposed
to arrive in late spring of
2017. A healthy ridership is
needed to ensure the service
stays. The condos will draw
buyers who will use the ferry,
for sure.
The developer, Mark Caller
said, Good retail follows good
residential. Thats music to
our ears. We all make jokes
about too many dollar stores
and nail salons. Well, heres a
chance to attract other kinds
of stores. And for the current
small businesses struggling to
stay afloat, heres some more
reason to hang on. New customers are on the way.
The street can become the
appealing commercial desti-

Page 9
nation it should be.
The only caution flag worth
noting is timing. All developments are subject to market
timing. The Seaside Landing
project, as its called, needs
to get going. The Ocean
Grande is a case study in poor
timing or bad luck. The impressive oceanfront condo
was basically built a year too
late. It opened in June 2006
but real estate had already
started its historic decline
earlier that year with the full
blown collapse coming in
2008. Had the Ocean Grande
opened sooner and enjoyed
success, the Beach Club site
would have followed with
new condos of its own. And
116th Street would already be
a different place. Still, even
with its unfortunate start, the
Ocean Grande is healthy and
from what we hear, residents
love it.
So, we say, lets go. Lets
drop the refrain about Rockaway always getting dumped
on and throw out the welcome
mat for those who want to
make it better.

Glad To See
Dear Editor:
Really good news, this is the
kind of development 116th
needs, add the ferry and maybe
even reconnect the old Rockaway Line railroad tracks for
North South Queens / Midtown
rail access - hey we can dream thanks for reporting on this.
Jan G.

Dream Dashed
Sad To See
Dear Editor:
The publisher of the RT is excited about a massive new development that will only add
to the traffic and congestion
of what is already the most
crowded area in Rockaway (RT,
8/11). The author of Braving
the Waves, who masterfully described the unique soul of our
home after 9/11, writes that the
future of 116th St. looks shining. The Brooklyn developer
says unabashedly, This is really
about capitalism. Aye, Kevin,
we hardly knew ye.
Arthur Cholakis

Dear Editor:
(Regarding new development)
Every time I get excited that
I might be able to fulfill my
childhood dream of living near
the beach in the Rockaways,
my dreams get dashed. Senior
housing for those with a minimum income of $40,000? I am a
senior and IF I had an income
over 40 grand- I could move to
the boardwalk in Long Beach.
Just saying.
Suzi A.

Dream Come True

Dear Editor:

The front page news on a

Beach-116 development project - The Seaport Landing is a
dream come true.
Mark Caller's plans for senior and market-rate housing
sounds sensational... a key element maybe in the Rockaway
Resurgence. But isn't it easy to
say the right thing (?), but so
much more difficult to 'do the
right thing.' I join Spike Lee
and Lola Star in wishing Caller
and his group the greatest success in this Rockaway endeavor.
P.S.: - I read the Rockaway
Times this morning on the B
train. How come I can drive to
Sheepshead Bay on the Belt,
fight the Ruskies for parking,
and yet arrive at Columbus Circle in one hour total...60 minutes - an impossibility on Rockaway's A train!!!
Peter J Stubben

Besides Condos
Dear Editor:
What
Rockaway
actually needs is things to do other
than go to the beach or go to
eat somewhere. Kids are drink-

ing and doing drugs because
there's nothing to actually do
around here. From a local that's
lived here all my life and is still
a teen, there's absolutely nothing to do that's fun and or productive. Give us Playland again,
an arcade, a movie theater,
maybe even more parks. Just
something for the kids/teens of
Rockaway to get out and do.
Lauren Condoleo

Mazzones Thumbs Up
Dear Editor:

Open)
I am a regular customer of
Mazzone Hardware in Carroll

will love having them. Great
service.

If you have wanted to go to

Broadway but have been too
afraid of the high-ticket prices, you should think about
TKTS. The Theater Development Fund figured out long
ago that it makes sense to sell
discounted theater tickets so
that shows dont have empty
seats.
This highly successful idea
started in Times Square and
now there are several booths
around the city that sell the
discounted tickets. There
is one at the South Street
Seaport, one in downtown
Brooklyn and now there is
a pop-up booth at Lincoln
Center. How deeply are the
tickets discounted? Well, I
just went to see An American
in Paris and paid $74 a ticket.
Pretty good, right? Now get
this, I was in the fourth row
of the orchestra, center aisle!
Thats crazy!
And its not the first time
I had those types of seats
from TKTS. I have seen
Kinky Boots, Le Miserables,
and The Curious Incident
at Night, and many others,
all in the first couple of rows
in the orchestra. Whats the
trick? Well, ok there are a few
things you should know, and
Im going to share them with
you. If you go to Times Square
you can get same day matinee
tickets, but if you want to get
next day matinee tickets you

need to go to the South Street

Seaport location. And by the
way, there are always a lot
fewer people at that location
than at Times Square. The
South Street booth opens at
11am and stays open till 6pm.
If you get there by 10:45 you
are usually within the first 20
or so people. If you are coming from Rockaway, drive in
through the tunnel and park
at the Battery garage and walk
over. Parking is $20 and even
with the tolls, you are still
way ahead of the game because you will be literally first
on line, and very few people
get next day matinee tickets,
so you will be upfront at the
theater.
If you find yourself at the
Times Square location there are
a couple of things you should
know too. First, if you want to
see a non-musical, what they
refer to at TKTS as a play, go
on the west side of the booth.
Its a separate line and usually shorter than the line on the
east side. The other side is for
musicals and non-musicals,
but is usually longer because
everyone wants to see a musical. You can get up to six discounted tickets. Unlike the old
days when the booth first operated, you no longer need cash
because they take credit cards
now.
The Times Square booth
has two times it opens

LAZER

first for matinees, the booth
opens at 10:00 and closes at
2:00 pm. Then for the evening
performances it re-opens at
3:00 pm. The earlier you get
on line the better chance you
have of getting the best seats.
My mini-mermaid has been
to the Brooklyn booth and
reported good service there
too, so that is always an option too. That one is in the
Metro-Tech complex on Jay
Street.
Now if you go in this heat,
try to minimize your wait
time and bring water and a
book. Times Square is best
if it's overcast. You can get
there by 2:30 and be in the
front of the line. For my money, the South Street Seaport
offers the shortest line.
Oh and heres another tip,
have a back-up choice just
in case the first show is not
available; always good to
be prepared. And another
thing, TKTS hires people in
red shirts to tell you about
the service and the shows.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 18, 2016

They wont recommend one
show over another, but they
are really very knowledgeable, helpful and highly entertaining themselves. Also
the TKTS app for the phone
can give you a live feed of the
shows available while you are
on line.
So with temperatures reaching the 100s, you can only
take so much of the beach!
Try a show, the theaters are
air-conditioned and it will lift
your spirits to see so many
talented people plying their
trade on the stages of both
Broadway and off-Broadway!

Safe Access to the Beach & Bicycle Docking Stations

By Hank Iori, President BHPOA

The Rockaway community is

approaching the 4th anniversary in October of Hurricane
Sandy. The storm certainly
tested our resolve as one community across the Peninsula.
It has not been easy to rebuild.
Many residents are still working on pulling things back together.
There is a stretch of beach
from 127th Street to 149th
Street that suffered significant
damage resulting from Hurricane Sandy that needs the
NYC Department of Parks and
Recreation to pay closer attention to streets. The communities of Rockaway Park, Belle
Harbor and Neponsit, thanks
to the Department of Transportation and Department of
Design and Construction are
finally getting their sidewalks
and street by the beach entry
area reconstructed after being destroyed after Hurricane
Sandy. The construction will
be complete by this November.

The NYC Department of

Parks and Recreation is responsible for the beach area
from the baffle wall to the Atlantic Ocean. Our communitys beach entry area (corral)
design called for concrete
flooring inside the baffle wall.
Parks initially denied the request to put concrete in the
baffle entry area believing it
never existed. Discussions
were held for some time until BHPOA VP John Signorelli
pulled pictures from Google
for each block showing that
concrete had been in the coral
area before Hurricane Sandy.
Parks then agreed upon reviewing the photographs and
applied for FEMA funding.
FEMA approved their funding request. Parks is presently issuing an RFP to concrete
within the baffle wall coral
and may start the construction
sometime this fall.

Rockaway Park have made

proposals to enhance the baf-

fle wall ocean side area to primarily incorporate a bicycle

docking station. The docking station would have bicycle locking stands, flag pole,
sponsor signage, etc. mounted on a concrete base. The
foundation would be continuous with the corals concrete.
This would ensure public
safety by eliminating hazards
and obstructions to pathways
and sidewalks. The attached
pictures show bicycles and
carriages placed haphazardly
around the beach entry areas
and DOT sidewalks/bollards,
indicating a clear need for
bicycle docking stations. We
have provided several design
plans for such docking stations. The docking stations
are necessary for both public
safety, environmental reasons
as well as to prevent bicycle
theft.
Next Steps
The community ocean side
bicycle station design between the baffle wall and the
16ft high berm was denied
by Parks. We were informed

Things could be so much better!

by the Queens Parks Commissioner, that the NYS Department of Environmental

Conservation will not allow
additional concreting of the
entry area.
The impacted communities are requesting that Parks
revisit this decision, collaborate with the communities
and work with the NYS DEC
to meet this important public need. Extending concrete
has been approved by the
NYS DEC for the Rockaway
Boardwalk, Beach Walkways
and the Elevated Red Cross/
Lifeguard/Bathrooms.
We
request that the NYS DEC be
informed and approve this

proposal. We further request

that the NYS DEC provide a
response directly to the communities.
Summary - Proposed Site
Plans - Beach 127th St. to

The Rockaway communities
from Beach 127th Street to

Require safe and unobstructed access to the

Require extending the already planned concrete
area at the beach entry.
Extend the concrete area
further onto the beach to
eliminate entry hazards

that will occur if bicycles
are allowed to pile up. By
providing a concrete-bicycle docking area on the
beach side of the wall, bicycles would be secured
and neatly aligned. This
would prevent pedestrian
accidents, bicycle thefts
and lessen Police Department activity.
The communities of Rockaway Park, Belle Harbor
and Neponsit are asking all
public officials to support
this enhancement by:
contacting the NYS Department of Environmental Protection directly to
approve the necessary
addition of concrete for
the bicycle docking stations.
encouraging the Parks
Department and the Mayors office to support this
proposal and to notify
NYS DEP of their support.
requesting that the NYS
DEP communicate directly with the communities.

BEACH 116TH

Continued from Page 3

much-needed crutch Let's not
fool ourselves the block needs a
lot of help!
Beach 116th Street has long
had a bad reputation due to trouble caused by nearby SROs, persistent panhandlers, long abandoned properties and tenacious
ticket agents on a street with already limited parking. As business owners deal with them daily, those issues are hard to ignore
and many hope they will be addressed before the development
comes, or as a result of it coming. The project is a positive.
There will be more people on the
block and hopefully that means
the city will add more resources
like foot patrols to clean up the
mess and the panhandlers, Peter Patel, owner of Rogoffs said.
You cant walk a block without
10 people asking you for money,
but this project should be a positive thing. Just like the Ocean
Grande, it will be good. We can
get more middle class people on
the block instead of panhandlers.
Hopefully there will be more development like this.

Stuart Rabinowitz, owner of

Kings Pharmacy said he wishes
development such as this would
start right from the boardwalk,
as much of the east side of the
beach block has also long been
neglected. This project would
be amazing, but they need to
start something like this from the
boardwalk because its disgusting. Instead of having disgusting, empty buildings, it will bring
people in the neighborhood to
good housing. This will help. Anything they build that isnt a 99
cents store would be good, Rabinowitz said.
Paul Ohana, owner of the sign
store ADP USA, was also hopeful
for the development. It will be
great. The block can definitely
be improved and this is exactly what happened in Arverne.
They put lots of residential units
there and it brought it more
stores and more people. We need
some good retail or a gallery to
go in there. People can choose
to go anywhere in Rockaway, like
Beach 90th, but we want to give
people something that will make
them remember Beach 116th
and keep them coming back

here, Ohana said.

Rocco Ritorto, owner of Roccos
Unisex Salon, said he would be
interested in a retail space within the building himself. Id love
to bring a better haircut place to
one of the stores downstairs. I
think this is going to be very good
as a whole. There will be more
people, and the more people, the
more business, Ritorto said.
Some see the development as
a good start to spark a change
on Beach 116th. Daniel Mirkin,
owner of Mirkin Vision believes
the project could be the catalyst
that Beach 116th needs to eliminate the negative aspects. Im
thrilled with this idea. It will be
great to have new businesses and
new residents and it might be the
thing to push out the hotels and
SROs and maybe things like the
Sandbar can be redeveloped.
This could be the snowball that
starts rolling down the hill and
brings more good change, Mirkin said.
Others agreed that the project
would be a good start. The Beach
Club and lot across the street will
be taken care of but theres still
going to be empty businesses

Page 17
around them, Harry Patel, whos
owned Paper Panda for 26 years,
said. Rockaway is not going to
change with one project, there
needs to be a complete reboot,
butut after [Caller] establishes
his plan and gets his return, other
builders will be encouraged to do
the same, Patel said, adding that
it cant come soon enough. If
this thing comes, it will be a good
thing, but how long will it take?
Mike Adil, owner of Paninico on
the 200-block, also wondered
about the timing and hoped it
can lead to more. How long is it
gonna take? Weve been hearing
about things like this for years,
so we hope this that that its serious. Anything positive happening on the block is good for the
community. It will be positive for
the block, for the merchants and
for everybody, Adil said, adding
that other vacant properties will
still need to be addressed. The
developer is going to make nice
buildings and spend good money, but we still have the old theater and hotel across the block.
We need the whole block to be
cleaned up, he said, But I cant
wait to see this happen.

Dont think of them as traffic cones.

But as part of a $500 million improvement plan.
We know our crews make getting around a hassle now and then. But all
that work is a sign of our investment creating the most reliable electric
system possible right here on Long Island. So not only will we respond to
downed power lines faster, well be able to prevent many outages before
they occur. The cones will soon be gonethe improvements will be here
for years to come.

Beach Channel Ball Field Reborn

By Dan Guarino

If you build it, they will come

back.
For some weeks now the familiar Beach Channel HS campus
baseball field has been under
renovation. While green tarp
wrapped around its outside fence
has blocked the work from view,
the sounds of heavy machinery
are unmistakable.
A short video shot by Channel
View School for Research parent
Cami Paladine shows mounds of
sandy dirt being moved. As it turns
out Paladine herself was one of the
prime movers in getting the long
needed renovation going.
One day after a game, I personally walked on the field with
my son Tyler and some other
players and I almost twisted my
ankle. And I was wearing sneakers. That was my turning point
something needed to be done.
Almost a year ago I started
advocating for the renovation
project. Our Channel kids while
playing on the fields were getting hurt from all the large rocks,

sand holes, and sprinkler heads

were exposed and sticking out of
ground.
Some of it, she pointed out,
was damage done by Hurricane
Sandy. But other parts of the field
had been degrading for years.
A visitor who walked the field
noted it was sandy, uneven, pitted with holes and rocks and at
least in one place has what looks
like an exposed sprinkler fixture
sticking out.
It was a safety issue, said Paladine. Not only was the home
team affected by these conditions, but we also host a lot of
other teams, like the PSAL and
others.
She and other parents rallied
to draw attention to the state of
the fields. They were joined by
community advocates, residents
and elected officials or their representatives. Among those was
Assemblyman Philip Goldfeder.
Everyone played a part to a
certain point. But the one that
stepped up out of all our local
elected officials was Philip Goldfeders office. Phil and his staff

were consistent in helping me

get the meetings with the School
Construction Authority and engineers to get the process rolling. Their determination with
monthly emails and calls to get
answers on when they were getting started was amazing.
In fact in January Phil Goldfeder and the NYC School Construction Authority announced the
launch of the $1 million project
to repair baseball and softball
fields at the Beach Channel Educational Campus.
The SCA plan, which was also
worked out with school officials,
included regrading the fields and
resodding them. This would get
rid of dangerous ruts and poor
conditions parents and players
had to contend with since 2012,
when Sandy hit. Irrigation and
drainage would also be reworked
to reduce effects from future
flooding.
When contacted Assemblyman Goldfeder confirmed hes
pleased that the work is now underway. The renovation of the
Beach Channel Fields is a ho-

merun for Rockaway, he said.

We finally have a field worthy
of our hometown hero Dolphins
(team), and all the boys and girls
at Beach Channel who play and
train there. I give tremendous
credit to the School Construction
Authority for making our students a priority and quickly completing this necessary work.
For her part Paladine says the
wish list for upgrades was a little
longer, including new dugouts,
fences and bleachers.
Although she was not part of
the planning process, she would
have liked to see an artificial turf
field added that would have
lasted longer than grass and
would have endured the Rockaway weather better and last for
many years.
But she says, as earth movers
continue to shape the new fields
along Beach Channel Drive, At
the end of the day the kids are
getting safer fields.
And that was what she, her
fellow school parents and other
concerned parties were pushing
for all along.

Steve Belson was a surfer,

a lifeguard for 10 years and a
proud member of the FDNY. On
September 11, 2001, Belson lost
his life while trying to save others in the World Trade Center.
On Saturday, August 20, the life
of Belson will be celebrated during the 15th Annual Steve Belson
Memorial Ocean Swim and Music Festival.
The event not only honors Belson, but serves as a fundraiser
for fellow lifeguards. Before
Steve was a firefighter, he was a
lifeguard up and down the peninsula, but primarily at the Beach
86th and Beach 97th shacks. He
lifeguarded for 10 years before
joining the FDNY, event organizer Sean Kellar said. Each year,
a few lifeguards are selected to
win $1,000 college scholarship
awards. It is open to all lifeguards
who fill out an application explaining why they deserve the incentive. To date weve awarded
$120,000 over the years. It shows
that this event has some staying
power and were grateful for the
community support that we get
each year, Kellar said. The directors of the fund are Kellar, Pat
Savage and John Maguire. We
were all great friends with Steve back in the fun days, so its
wonderful that we can continue
to do this each year, Kellar said.
This year, four or five lifeguards
will receive the awards, which
will be announced during a ceremony that will take place on
Beach 92nd Street at 10 a.m. on
Saturday. The ceremony will be
followed by a casual half-mile
swim. Participants are encouraged to go at their own pace, as it
is not a race.
The event takes place on Beach
92nd Street, which became
known as Bells Beach after
Belson passed away. When he
was lifeguarding, and even when
he wasnt, thats where youd
find him. He was like the mayor
of the boardwalk on Beach 92nd
Street. Hed always be there talking about the waves and surfing

Steve Belson

or life in general and he lived

on Holland Avenue and 92nd,
so that was his neighborhood
beach, Kellar recalled.
For the first time in four summers, the brass plaque dedicated to Belson, will find its home
once again on the boardwalk of
Beach 92nd Street. When Sandy
destroyed the boardwalk, the
plaque seemed to go with it. By
fate, the plaque was discovered
among the rubble by Belsons
friend, Lou Romas. Romas salvaged the plaque and took care
of it as the boardwalk was rebuilt. With the boardwalk back,
the plaque will go back to where
it belongs on Beach 92nd Street
and will be able to be seen during Saturdays ceremony. It
survived the storm and now its
going to be in its rightful place.
Were really looking forward to
that, Kellar said.
On the other end on Beach
92nd Street at the Bungalow Bar,
there will be a fun music festival
starting at 7 p.m. Anyone is welcome to join. Theres a $20 suggested donation for the general
public and $10 for lifeguards.
The donation helps support the
scholarship fund that awards
lifeguards each year. Several musicians that have played at past
Steve Belson Memorial events
will be back. Squid Trio featuring
Guy, Chris and Kenny will kick it
off at 7p.m. The Lustre Kings with
Mark, Chops, Brian and Todd
will play at 8 p.m. and Bill Kirchen with Jack and Mack, as well
as special guests John Tichy and
Thirsty Dave will play at 9 p.m.

In the end, life is about

joy. ~Andrew J. Israel
By Helen Kilgallen

Some people live a lifetime

and struggle to find any joy
or love. Andrew Israel continues to give lessons on life
and all that it has to offer us.
He was an amazing man full
of life, love and joy. He had
the greatest love, Teresa, and
all his children, family and
friends always by his side. He
taught us to live life fully and

seemed to give selflessly to

others. What a gift to be the
giver and receive so much joy
in return.
I had never met Andy but
his wife Teresa became a part
of my life in the past year
when her husband was battling cancer. I knew her husband was very special just by
the way Teresa smiled during
these very tough times. She
showed up on her yoga mat

Page 29

to gain strength and peace

for the long, arduous road
ahead of her. She became a
pillar of strength and beauty. It was always an honor
and most certainly an inspiration for my teachings. So
when Andy passed away last
week, a message was put on
FB from Cynthia Ramnarace
and she mentioned this quote
that Andy had said to her in
conversation, In the end, life
is about joy. Yes, it most certainly is about the joy in our
lives. Not about the struggles
and sadness. We must open
our hearts to this joy that is
always there. In our darkest
moments, it may be difficult
to find joy but when you do
hold on to it. It is life itself.
So thank you Andy for your
inspiration for this column. I
will always keep your quote
close to my heart. It speaks
to so many people and once
again you are the giver. Imagine waking up each day to
feel joy. When you step out of
bed, say thank you for this day.
Your gratitude will blossom
to others. Smile often and be

open to everyone you meet that

day. Stay positive and let go of
adversity. Negative thoughts
wear you down. Be a beacon of
light and shine brightly.
Live your life fully and
honor your place in society.
Give thanks for the blessing
of life. Pray for the strength
to live each day with joy in
your heart. When tough times
come as they often do, remember the joyful times.
May you be grounded,
peaceful and full of compassion for all beings everywhere. Let go of your resentments and open the doors to
freedom by forgiving. It is a
blessing to be alive today. Always remember, in the end,
life is about joy.
Finish each day and be
done with it. You have done
what you could. Some blunders and absurdities have
crept in; forget them as soon
as you can. Tomorrow is a
new day. You shall begin it
serenely and with too high a
spirit to be encumbered with
your old nonsense. ~~Ralph

Countertop
Alternatives

By Artie Wallace

We have all seen the standard countertops such as formica, granite, marble, etc. What
is not so common are the custom countertops. A custom
countertop is more commonly
made of wood or concrete, but
can be made of most anything,
if you have the right person
working with you on it, and
can cost less than a high-end
granite countertop.
I have made countertops out
of concrete using glass chips
for accent color and wood
countertops using recycled/
reclaimed wood with molding
inlays. My partner has even
done some remarkable things
using
pennies/coins
that
would work great as a countertop.

Though custom countertops

in most cases require a professional to make it a reality, the
best ones require a DIYer on
the designing side of it
As the designer of your countertop, the three most important things are: 1- be creative,
2- be realistic and most importantly, 3- the only stupid idea
is one not discussed with the
person creating your countertop.
Things that can be worked
into a custom countertop include (but not limited to) old
furniture, old glass (vases,
dishes, etc.), old costume jewelry, etc. the list can be endless. If you can design it, the
right person can create it.
Advantages of wood countertops include creativeness
that can be worked into it us-

BENEFIT FOR A FRIEND IN NEED

DAVID KIRCHEIN

ing the right moldings, custom

shaping, ease of working into
any decor, etc.
Advantages of concrete
countertops include extended lifespan, versatility with
designs (patterns), ability to
incorporate memorable items
into your countertop (glass
plates, small personal items,
etc.).
Finishes on custom countertops most commonly are
glossy but can be made into

a matted or low gloss finish if

desired.
So as the designer of your
custom countertop, take the
time to think about the look
you're after, what designs
or memories you would like
worked into your countertop
and what youll be happy with
for the years to come.

Sandcastle Contest August 27

Get your buckets and shovels! The Rockaway Sandcastle
Contest is returning. This fun,
summer event is making a
comeback and its being hosted by the Rockaway Times,
in partnership with the NYC

Recreation. For almost 20
years, West End Realty sponsored the Sandcastle Contest
on Beach 117th Street. The
event was last held in 2013,
but were bringing it back.
The contest will be held Saturday, August 27, with registration starting at 11 a.m.
on the boardwalk on Beach
116th Street. The contest will
start at noon and youll have
two hours. There will be give-

aways, plus trophies for the

top three winners in three age
categories including 1-8 (with
an adult), 9-15 and 16 and
up. You can enter as an individual or group. Participants
are encouraged to bring their
own sand tools. The contest
is not limited to castles. All

Proudly serving our community for over 25 years.

Is This a First?
Ive been digging around for
information on the upcoming
topic of bodysurfing and I havent found what I would have
expected, that there has been
a bodysurfing contest in the
Rockaways. And I came up with
nil. In fact I reached out to Tom
Dugan of Eastern Surfing Magazine and as far as he is concerned, he cannot recollect any
bodysurfing contest on the East
Coast sinceforever!
So its with tremendous pride
and delight that I announce
that The Rockaway Beach Bodysurf Underground and Rockaway Beach Surfers Association
will present the first annual Rockaway Beach Bodysurf
Contest on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at the Beach 84th
Street Jetty ("The Box") from
10:00 am to 2:00 pm in Rockaway Beach, New York City.
From the Wikipedia site,
Bodysurfing is the art and

sport of riding a
wave without the
assistance of any
buoyant
device
such as a surfboard
or bodyboard. Bodysurfers
usually
equip themselves
with a pair of specialized swimfins
that optimize propulsion and help
the
bodysurfer
catch, ride and kick
out of waves.
The
Pipeline
Bodysurfing Classic competition runs at the
world-famous Banzai Pipeline. This event is considered
to be a world-class pro-am
competition and yet is also
considered one of the truly
unique underground surf contests around. Among the bodysurfing population at large, the
event is considered the premier event internationally. It is
one of the only times a professional bodysurfing competition has exclusive access to the

Pipeline's favorable
winter waves.
Whats going to
be
exponentially
cool is that the long
time winner of the
Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic, Mark
Cunningham, is flying in from Hawaii
specifically for the
event!
The Contest is
open to male and
female participants
of all ages, to compete for a Grand
Prize Trophy designed by legendary Bodysurfer, Honolulu Lifeguard, and artist Mark
Cunningham, as well as additional prizes. Registration will
open at Beach 84th Street at
9:00 am, the first heat will begin at 10:00 am. There is a $20
fee to enter, which includes
a Rockaway Beach Bodysurf
Contest T-shirt. After party to
follow which is still TBD, updates in following week's column.

Bodysurfers can sign up at

the RBSA website; rbsurfersassociation.org
While youre there, sign up
for a $20 lifetime membership
to the RBSA so we can continue to bring insanely cool events
like this to Rockaway Beach
and put us on the international
map of the surfing world.
The mission of the Rockaway
Beach Surfer's Association is
to provide a unified voice for
the surf community and help
insure public policy appropriately addresses the needs
of our large and vibrant community. The Association further exists to be of service to
the local community through
charitable events, contests,
and other opportunities to get
together, as well as by addressing important environmental
concerns for our local beaches
and waterways.
P.S. An invite has been sent
to President Obama, so if you
see long black limos that weekend, he may have accepted the
invitation.

Woerners World

SAYING GOODBYE TO BIG IZ

By Ryan Patrick Woerner

To use the clich he wore

many hats in chronicling the
legacy of Andrew Israel would
only serve to understate the great
contributions he made to society
in his brief 49 years of life.
But he sure did wear many hats.
Father. Coach. Teacher. Friend.
Protector. Teammate. Mentor. All
monikers of a life well-lived. One
superlative that cannot be left
forgotten: Grower. Andrew was
passionate about growing the
sport of rugby wherever he went.
At first glance, rugby is quite the
barbaric endeavor. Our countrys
most popular (and violent) sport,
American football, is played with
equipment and built-in stoppages every 10-15 seconds. Rugby,
on the other hand, involves little
protective gear and a much leaner volume of respite for participants. The two sports respective
fields are similar shapes, and the
scoring mechanisms are somewhat analogous: get the ball to a

rectangular scoring area, or kick

the ball through a U-shaped goal
post. Like football, rugby calls for
its players to be athletic avatars
of sorts: strong, but also skilled
in hand-eye motor skills; fast,
but also supremely conditioned;
recklessly tough, but able to avoid
injury through proper technique.
The rugby movement has become widely pervasive on the
college scene. The process of this
occurring is rather primitive; a
student with an interest in rugby must go through the proper
channels at their school to obtain
paltry resources and approval
to have an officially recognized
club. Andrew was able to accomplish this at Marist College
in serving as the clubs president
during his time as a student,
when rugby was at an infantile
stage nationwide. He convinced
friends and football teammates
to join him on the pitch, serving
as a coach to many who lacked
prior playing experience.
He certainly used strong pillars

to build the program in Poughkeepsie - the Marist Rugby Football Club still exists today, practicing four times per week and
offering a full game schedule in
both semesters.
Over the years, the popularity of rugby has also grown considerably at Andrews parochial
alma mater, Xavier High School.
He obtained his initial knowledge and love for the game
while playing a major role on the
schools 1985 National Championship team. In recent years, Xaviers RFC has grown to involve
a standing membership of 100
players per year spread out over
four teams.
With rugby being such a popular choice among many of the
residents from Andrews beloved peninsula attending Xavier,
he felt that the sport should be
introduced to locals at an earlier age. Out of that mindset, The
Rockaway Youth Rugby Club was
born he served as a co-founder
and coach since the outfits in-

ception. The program now fields

four teams while offering a competitive summer league.
The sport of rugby, like many
others, is an enigma of sorts. By its
rules, the activity in theory could
perpetuate a number of machismo characteristics that create
negative connotations with other
contact sports. Dig deeper, and
you find folks like Andrew growers who use the game of rugby
to share a sense of brotherhood
with friends and future generations of players. This commitment to grassroots development
will certainly equate to tangible
growth in the sport as the United
States looks to improve on their
current world ranking of #17.
But locally, there will always be a
void. In his spirit, the growing will
continue through the yeoman efforts of the Rockaway Youth Rugby Clubs administration.
More information on the Rockaway Youth Rugby Club can
be found at http://www.rockawayyouthrugby.org/.

The Family of Andrew Israel would like to thank

everyone for their love and support.

It is during difficult times that we learn how much our family and
friends mean to us.
Thank you so much for your kindness and sympathy,
at a time when it was much needed and greatly appreciated

PLAYOFFS UNDERWAY!!!
By The Commissioner

First and foremost, we would

like to thank everyone for making our 5th season the best one
so far. Hopefully the league will
continue to grow. Two weeks
ago we finished up our regular
season. It was an exciting week
as we saw the last two teams
punch their ticket into the postseason.
The early games we had the
Mudsharks take two from the
Moneyballs, 8-2 and 5-2. With
the two losses the Moneyballs
fell to the 4th seed. In the other
matchup, the No-Shows held on
to their season by making light
work of the Orioles 14-1 and 125. After that, the No-Shows were
just gonna need some help from
the later games to squeeze into
the playoffs.
The 2016 Season wasn't too
promising for the Orioles but
they didn't waste any time getting ready for the 2017 Season,
signing two rookies to contracts
and also signing two-game
contracts to former Oriole
greats.
As for the later games, Morning Wood handled their business with the Misfits winning
14-8 and 6-3. After such a hot
start the Misfits lost nine out
of their last 11, and are gonna
have to watch the postseason
from the bleachers. With the
wins, Morning Wood clinched
their second straight 1st place
finish. The final matchup had
Old Head taking the Chuggernauts, with the winner grabbing
the last spot in the playoffs. It
wasn't pretty but Old Head won
both by 9-6 and 5-2.

Postseason play opened up

this past weekend. Morning

Wood and the Mudsharks both

had the week off for grabbing
the bye. All playoff series are
best of three but both Matchups
were only two games. Our first
series had the (6) No-Shows
upset the (3) Knights of Columbus winning 8-6 and then 5-3.
No-Shows had trouble getting
everyone there each week, but
now we can see what they are
capable when everyone shows
as they are only two games away
from the championship.
The other series had the (5)
Old Head get revenge on the (4)
Moneyballs. After getting swept
in the regular season by the
Moneyballs, it was Old Head
who did the sweeping. Old
Head even kept the $Balls off
the scoreboard shutting them
out both games by scores of 7-0
and 1-0.
After their sweep, (5) Old
Head advances and are gonna
take on the (1) Morning Wood.
Last time these two teams faced
off in the playoffs was the 2014
Championship when M.W. took
the crown. The boys in blue
have been saying all year that
they are gonna hoist the trophy
at the end of the year. In order
to do so, they are gonna have to
get through Morning Wood who
are trying to make it five years in
a row in the final. First pitch is
9:30 Sunday on Field 1.
In the other semi-final game
it's the (2) Mudsharks taking
on the (6) No-Shows. The NoShows coming off their first
postseason victory are looking to keep the ball rolling
and knock off the defending
champs. Hopefully they can
have the same team show up
again if they want to have a
chance. Doesn't matter for the
Sharks, whoever they put out
there, they always find a way to
win. Mudsharks are looking to
make their fourth appearance
in the final in the last five years.
Both teams square off Sunday
at 9:30 a.m. on Field 2.

The Pipeline:
New York Surf School
By Katie McFadden

You paddle out and wait for the

right moment. With a little help
from an experienced instructor,
you find your perfect wave. With
all your power you paddle towards the shore and wait for the
cue to pop-up. Before you know
it, youre standing up, with only
a board between your feet and
the ocean, and youre riding the
wave. The feeling of accomplishment is unlike any other, that is,
until the wipeout, but, hey, no
one is expected to be perfect the
first time. But those at New York
Surf School have perfected the
art of sharing the stoke.
NY Surf School, owned by
longtime surfer and Rockaway
resident, Frank Cullen, is the
longest-running surf school in
Rockaway, and it almost started by accident. Cullen originally started playing around with a

longboard aficionado website.

After learning to build websites
himself, he decided to create a

site where he offered surf lessons. I made the site and I started getting calls, Cullen said. I
was so happy when I taught my
first lesson and someone got up.
I couldnt believe it. Its so amazing to watch someone get it. Its
almost as fun as surfing yourself.
You know they feel the way you
feel when you ride the waves,
Cullen said, and with that, NY
Surf School formed in 2006.
At first it was just me and one
board. But the calls started coming in and I bought more boards
and hired more instructors and it
kept expanding, he said. NY Surf
School, certified by the National
Surf Schools and Instructors Association, is now comprised of
about 50 boards and 14 instructors who are CPR and first aid
certified.
NY Surf School operates seven
days a week and offers everything
from private lessons to group
lessons, surf camps and yoga
and surfing classes. Each lesson
includes land instruction to go
over the basics of surfing, safety
and surf etiquette. Then the rest
of the time is spent in the water
with instructors who help set
you up to catch the perfect wave
and let you know when to stand
up to ride it to shore. NY Surf
School uses high-quality equipment and wetsuits to make the

experience even better. Cullen

says that some have utilized his
surf school for special events like
birthdays or bachelorette parties
and big brands like Nike, Patagonia and Corcoran Group had utilized them for company outings.
Theyre also helped train actors
who never surfed a day in their
life to look like pros just in time
for commercial shoots.
On a sweltering Monday morning, there was no better place to
be than in the water. After applying plenty of sunscreen suiting
up, I was paired with the friendly and knowledgeable instructor
Kat McNamee. We spent about
15 minutes in the sand as she
spoke about safety and the basic positioning and moves that
would later help me ride the
waves. Before I knew it, I was in
the water with a large group of
everyone from kids to adults,
who were already putting their
skills to the test. I was provided
with a vinyl-topped foam board
that Kat applied wax to as we got
in the water. She made sure to
mark off exactly where I should
lay on the board so I could use
it as reference each time. I had
taken a few surfing lessons previously, but with it being at least
two years since I tried the sport,
I wasnt feeling extremely confident. So it came as a pleasant
surprise when Kat set me up on
my first wave of the day and I
was able to stand up and ride it
all the way in. Throughout the
afternoon, with the help of Kat,
Frank, and the other instructors,
I was able to stand up on all but
one wave. It was an incredible,
fun afternoon and after such success, I may have officially caught
the bug. I cant wait to practice
on my own time, taking what I
learned at New York Surf School
with me.
New York Surf School is located at Beach 69th Street. Walk-ins
are accepted but reservations are
encouraged. Check out www.

Riis Lifeguards Dominate

National Championship
By Katie McFadden

You can feel extra safe while

swimming at Riis Park this summer. After all, the lifeguards consist of national champion lifesavers. Seven Riis Park lifeguards
made the trip to Hermosa Beach,
CA last weekend for the United
States Lifesaving Associations
National Lifeguard Championships and had a strong showing
in the west coast waters.
Federal
lifeguards
Tom
ONeill, Brian ONeill, Christian
Foti, Pat Kilgallen, Brendan Murphy, Brendan Woods and Danny
Collins joined about a thousand
others from across the country to
compete in the USLAs 2016 National Lifeguard Championships
from August 11 through August
13. The east coast boys proved

they can swim with the best of

them, and come on top.
Longtime competitive swimmers, Tom ONeill, Brian
ONeill and Pat Kilgallen, have
been participating in the National Lifeguard Championship
for five years. As competitive
swimmers in school, they saw
the championships as a way to
stay in shape in the summer.
Christian Foti participated for
the third time this summer.
One of the biggest events of
the weekend for the men was the
Open Surf race, which ONeill
described as a 400-meter distance swim that starts out with
about 100 competitors, which is
narrowed down to about 33 in
preliminaries. Out of the more
than 30 swimmers, Tom ONeill
placed first, making it his third
national title in that event, after winning in 2012 and 2014.
His fellow Riis Park guards were
close behind. The surf race
was one of the highlights of the

weekend because I finished first,

Christian Foti finished third,
Pat Kilgallen was fifth, Brendan
Woods in twelfth and Danny
Collins in fourteenth, ONeill
said. The men also dominated
the Run-Swim-Run, which includes two 200-meters runs and
a 400-meter swim. ONeill also
came on top in this event, followed by Pat Kilgallen in second,
Brian ONeill in sixth, Daniel
Collins in seventh, Christian Foti
in eighth, and Brendan Woods
in eleventh. Riis Park also took
first in the team event, the Open
Rescue Race, in which Kilgallen,
Foti and the ONeill brothers
participated in. Another team
consisting of Murphy, Woods
and Collins came in sixth in the
race. In another group event, the
Taplin Relay, which incorporates
a swimmer, a paddler, a surf skier
and a runner, the team of Kilgallen, Foti and the ONeill brothers took fourth. In an individual event, the Ironman, ONeill

came in fifth. He also dominated

the Open Male High Point for
scoring the most points of any
male in the whole competition.
The men said it was a good experience all around. Its always
a great experience. Youre swimming against the cream of the crop
in California, but you meet people
from all over the country and you
make good friends, Kilgallen said.
We had a lot of fun. Its a good
time. There are over a thousand
lifeguards from around the country so you get to meet new people,
Foti said. This was the first year
we brought seven competitors so it
was nice to have a big team. Were
all really good friends so it was fun
to cheer each other on and its fun
when you do well, ONeill said.
The challenge continues for
Foti and Tom ONeill, as they
have both been selected as part
of Team USA for the World Lifesaving Championship which
will be held in the Netherlands
in early September.
