Ceramicclaysarewaterbasedsubstancesmadefromclaymineralsmixed
withotherrawmaterials.Theyarebakedathightemperatures,ina
processknownasfiringtocreateceramics,suchasterracotta,
earthenware,stoneware,andporcelain.Paperclayproducedbypottery
claymanufacturersisanyoftheseclaybodies,towhichasmall
percentageofprocessedcellulosefiberhasbeenadded.Whenkilnfired,
thepaperburnsout,leavingtheclaybody.Consequentlythefiring
temperaturesandglazesselectionshouldbethesameonthoseusedwith
theclaybody.

Oilbasedclaysaremadefromvariouscombinationsofoils,waxes,and
clayminerals.Becausetheoilsdonotevaporateasdoeswater,oilbased

environments.Articlesmadefromoilbasedclayscannotbefired,and
thereforearenotceramics.Becausetheviscosityofoilsdecreasesas
temperaturerises,themalleabilityisinfluencedbyheatingorcoolingthe
clay.Oilbasedclayisnotsolubleinwater.Itcanbereusedandsoisa
popularmaterialforanimationartistswhoneedtobendandmovetheir
models.Itisavailableinamultitudeofcoloursandisnontoxic.

Plastilin,waspatentedinGermanybyFranzKolbin1880.Plastelinewas
developedbyClaudeChavantin1892,andtrademarkedin1927.[2]
Plasticinewasinventedin1897byWilliamHarbuttofBathampton,
England.PlastilinaistrademarkedasRomaPlastilinabySculpture
House,Inc.Accordingtotheirwebsite,theirformulais100yearsold.[3]
RomaPlastilinacontainssulfur,andsincecertainmoldmakingcompounds
willnotsetinsulfur'spresence,thisbringsdifficultytomakingmoldsof
itemsmadeofIndustrialplasticine.InIndia,oilbased"NoSulphur"clay
ismanufacturedbyUdayIndustriesforindustrialaswellasretailuse.

Polymerclayisamodelingmaterialthatcureswhenheatedfrom265F(129C)to275F(135C)for
15minutesper14inch(6.4mm)ofthickness,anddoesnotsignificantlyshrinkorchangeshapeduring
theprocess.Despitebeingcalled"clay",itgenerallycontainsnoclayminerals.Polymerclayissoldin
craft,hobbyandartstores,andisusedbyartists,hobbyists,andchildren.Polymerclayisalsopopularin
animationsinceitallowsstaticformstobemanipulatedframeafterframe.Leadingbrandsofpolymer
clayincludeFimo,KatoPolyclay,Sculpey,&Modello.
Paperclay
Paperclayishandmadeorcommerciallyavailableclaytowhichasmallpercentageofprocessed
cellulosefibreisadded.Thefibreincreasesthetensilestrengthofthedryclayandenablesdrytodry
andwettodryjoins.Commercialpaperclaysairdrytoafirm,lightweightsculpture,withminimal
shrinkingduringthedryingprocess.[4]
Paperclaycanbeusedasanunfiredbodyincraftanddollmaking.Itisusedinceramicartstudiosas
sculpturalandfunctionalstudiopottery.
