F. Character and Characterization of Novel Harry Potter and Deathly
Hollows
Main Character
a. Protagonist
1. Potter, Harry James
The protagonist of the novel, who turns seventeen
during the course of the book. Harry is a courageous and
determined young wizard who has decided not to return to
Hogwarts school, instead pursuing a quest that Dumbledore
left him to find and destroy Horcruxes, magic items that
keep Lord Voldemort alive. Harry is consistently faithful to
his quest throughout the book, though he struggles with
self-doubt and wonders whether Dumbledore truly loved
him.
2. Dumledore, Albus Percifal Wulfric Brian
The former headmaster of Hogwarts, and Harrys
friend and mentor, until his death, just before the events of
this book. Dumbledore is extremely clever and farsighted,
having laid the plans for Harrys quest very thoroughly, but
he is very cryptic, and Harry comes to doubt his wisdom.
Dumbledores character and accomplishments come under
attack throughout the course of the book. Dumbledore
founded the Order of the Phoenix, a group of wizards
dedicated to fighting Voldemort.

years. When Harry was one year old, Voldemort murdered

Harrys parents and tried to murder Harry, but his curse
rebounded upon him and tore his soul from his body, and
made him lose most of his powers.
Supporting Character
a. Good
1. Granger, Hermonie Jean
Hermione's most prominent features include her
prodigious intellect and cleverness. She is levelheaded,
book-smart and is very good with logic. She is often bossy
yet unfailingly dutiful and loyal to her friendsa person
who can be counted on. Rowling stated that Hermione is a
person that "never strays off the path; she always keeps her
attention focused on the job that must be done."
2. Weasley, Ronald Billius
Ron is introduces as "tall, thin and gangling, with
freckles, big hands and feet, and a long nose." Ron has the
trademark red hair of the Weasleys and is indeed one of
Harry's tallest schoolmates, even outgrowing some of his
older brothers. Rowling states in the novels that Ron has
freckles, though Rupert Grint, the actor who plays Ron, has
none. Rowling has also stated that Ron has blue eyes. Ron
is described as very funny but insensitive and immature.
3. Hagrid, Rubeus
He has a friendly, softhearted personality and is
easily driven to tears. He is also very loyal to Harry,
suffered several times during the series because of this
loyalty, and had to go into hiding twice to avoid prison.
4. Lupin, Remus John
Harrys former Defense Against the Dark Arts
teacher and good friend. Lupin is a werewolf and member

of the Order of the Phoenix. He marries Nymphadora Tonks

and becomes a father.
5. Moody, Alastor Mad Eye
An Auror, or Dark Wizard hunter, and a member of
the Order of the Phoenix. Moody is heavily scarred from
his battles with Dark wizards and wears a magic eyeball
thats always in motion.
6. Weasley, Fred and George
Fred and George Weasley are twin older brothers of
Ron and younger siblings of Percy. Like them all they have
red hair, but, unique to themselves they have a very downto-earth philosophy of life. Typical of students who are
"bored" with school due to lack of stimulation for their
advanced

abilities,

they

have

reputation

as

"troublemakers-in-residence" at Hogwarts.
Fred, the born-to-late-to-be-a-marauder, Weasley
showed his true Gryffindor nature to the end. Only George
could remain as he did after permanently loosing an ear to
Death Eaters in defense of Harry. He was able to see the
return of freedom to the wizarding world, despite the loss
of his "other-half," and life-long friend, Fred.
b. Bad
1. Dursley, Petunia Evans
Harrys aunt, the sister of his dead mother Lily, who
was a witch. Aunt Petunia has always hated wizards (and
Harry) as much as her husband.
2. Malfoy, Draco
Harrys former classmate and nemesis through
much of the series. Draco is a thoroughly nasty and
despicable boy, but he has not yet done anything heinous
enough (such as killing someone) to make him a confirmed
villain.
3. Snape, Saverous

PROSE (ANALYZING NOVEL FICTION)

Harry Opotter and Deathly Hallows

10th Group

Snape is generally depicted as being cold,

calculating, precise, sarcastic, and bitter. The adult Snape,
on the other hand, is portrayed as very self-assured and
confident of his abilities. Snape typically displays a very
calm and collected demeanour, rarely at a loss for words or
taken off guard. Like some other prominent members of
Slytherin house, Snape is shown to be a clever and cunning
wizard. He is intelligent and has a keen, analytical mind.
Snape is immensely brave.
4. Umbridge, Dolores Jane
Formerly (and briefly) the head of Hogwarts, and
now a senior member of the Ministry of Magic. Umbridge
is thoroughly evil, delighting in punishing others and using
rules and regulations to persecute people, though she is
apparently not one of Voldemorts Death Eaters. She is in
charge of finding and punishing Mudbloods for the
Ministry..
Incidental Character
a. Good
1. Barman, Hogs Head (Aberforth Dumbledore)
Aberforth Dumbledore, as he was revealed to be,
became a substantial help to the "war effort." Barely
reconciled to his older brother, Albus, he did maintain
residence which allowed frequent conversations. He gave
Harry great insight into the true character of his "Mentor,"
as well as physically saving him... twice. His purchase of
Sirius' mirror, and his vigil watching it for signs of
problems with Harry, made him able to summon Dobby
when Harry needed him most. Shown as a bit of a
curmudgeon, he, none-the-less acquitted himself well in the
battle.
2. Black, Regulus Arcturus

The infamous R.A.B. is difficult to place in a

"moral" category we was, after all, not only a Slytherin
but a Death Eater as well. It has been left a mystery of how
the woman, depicted in the un-removable portrait in the
Black home, raised not only one, but two children with
moral fiber.
3. Delacour, Fleur Isabelle
Finally married to Bill, she set up housekeeping at
the storybook "Shell Cottage" by the seashore, one of
twelve "safe houses" protected by "secret keeping" charms.
Providing sanctuary for Harry, Ollivander and Griphook
after their rescue from the Malfoy manor, her home also
serves as the final resting place for Harry's greatest fan,
Dobby.
4. Longbottom, Neville
A student in Harrys class, who for most of the
series has been a pathetic weakling, unable to remember his
lessons or perform magic properly. In previous novels we
learn that his parents were Aurors (Dark wizard hunters)
who were tortured and driven insane by the Death Eater
Bellatrix Lestrange. In this novel, he transforms himself
into the heroic leader of Dumbledores Army and the
underground resistance to Snape, filling Harrys role in his
absence.
5. Lovegood, Luna
A classmate of Harrys who belongs to Ravenclaw
House. Like other Ravenclaws, Luna is highly intelligent
and perceptive, but also rather dreamy and otherworldly.
She is a devoted friend of Harry, Ron, and Hermione and a
member of Dumbledores Army, the outlawed Hogwarts
club of Dumbledore loyalists.
6. McGonagall, Minerva

marry her. Unfortunately, after delivering their first child,
she was killed, following her father, Ted, and along side of
her husband, in the battle of Hogwarts. She did, however,

faithful to the end.
7. Tonks, Nymphandora
She did get her way and convince Remus Lupin to
marry her. Unfortunately, after delivering their first child,
she was killed, following her father, Ted, and along side of
her husband, in the battle of Hogwarts. She did, however,
make Harry their son, Teddy's, godfather and was truly
faithful to the end.
8. Weasley, Arthur
The father of the Weasley family, and an employee
of the Ministry of Magic. Arthur has always had a fondness
for and curiosity about the Muggle (non-wizarding) world,
which has kept him from advancing very far in his career at
the Ministry. When Voldemorts Death Eaters take over the
Ministry, his safety is imperiled as well.
9. Weasley, Ginerva (Ginny)
Rons younger sister, and formerly

Harrys

girlfriend. Ginny is a member of Dumbledores Army and

has proven herself a tough and resilient ally even before
getting together with Harry. Harry broke up with Ginny
when he realized that no one would be safe with him as
long as Voldemort is alive.
10. Weasley, Molly (Preweet)
Ron Weasleys mother, the formidable matriarch of
the large Weasley family, a family of pureblood wizards.
11. Weasley, Percy Ignatius

for the Ministry of Magic and takes a long time to perceive
its corruption and evil. InHarry Potter and the Order of the

Phoenix, Percy cut off ties with the rest of his family
because he sided with the Ministry against Dumbledore and
Harry, and he remains estranged from them at the beginning
of this book.
b. Bad
1. Crabbe, Vincent and Goyle, Gregory
Students at Hogwarts, and

followers. They are brutish, stupid, and cruel.

2. Dursley, Dudley
Harrys cousin, whom we know from the rest of the
series to be an overweight, spoiled bully. Harry rescued him
from a dementor attack two summers before.
3. Dursley, Vernon
Harrys uncle, an overweight, angry man who
knows that Harry is a wizard but hates to hear any mention
of wizards or magic.
4. Lestrange, Bellatrix Black
As incredible as it seems, she seemed to be in love
with Voldemort! Almost just as evil and hateful as her
master. One of Voldemorts most loyal, trusted, and
fearsome followers, whom Voldemort freed from Azkaban
prison. She is the sister of Narcissa Malfoy and aunt to both
Draco Malfoy and Nymphadora Tonks.
5. Malfoy, Lucius
One of Voldemorts followers, and the father of
Harrys classmate, Draco. Lucius was a very wealthy and
powerful man during Voldemorts absence, but now
Voldemort routinely abuses and humiliates him for not
being loyal enough to find and help Voldemort when he was
exiled from his body.
6. Malfoy, Narcissa Black
As hateful as she is, her obsession with her son's
safety eventually overcame her "loyalty" and fear of
Voldemort and she actually "saved" Harry's "real" life by

lying to Voldemort! She showed that she would rather

frantically search for Draco than to fight in the last battle.
7. Pettigrew, Peter
The life debt to Harry was paid, albeit
unintentionally, by a merest moment of hesitation while
fighting Harry. As with most others, Voldemort used
Wormtail up!
8. Skeeter, Rita
The notoriously aggressive and deceitful tabloid
journalist who tormented Harry and his friends two years
earlier during the Triwizard Tournament. Skeeter has
recently published a tell-all biography of Dumbledore.
