The joint family system has undergone a drastic change in India. There are a number of
factors which are leading to its disintegration. Opportunities for employment outside agriculture
and specially in the urban areas are increasing, as a result of which the young men from rural areas
have been shifting to those places. Many young persons in the urban areas are also moving out of
their parents places to seek openings in other parts of the country, or even outside India. The
property disputes and the sour relations between the mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law have
forced many persons to opt for an independent living. As a result of disintegration of joint families,
the aged have lost the traditional source of economic and social support which was easily available
to them in joint families.

On a surface which is free from obstacles, such as a clear road or path, only two or three species of
snakes can hope to catch up with a human being, even if they are foolish to try. A snake seems to
move very fast but its movements are deceptive. In spite of the swift, wave-like motions of its body,

3
the snake crawls along the ground at no more than the speed of a mans walk. It may, however,
have an advantage inside a jungle, where the progress of a man is obstructed by thorny bushes.
But in such places, the footsteps of a man are usually more than enough to warn snakes to keep
away. Although they have no ears of the usual kind, they can feel slight vibrations of the ground
through their bodies, and thus get an early warning of danger.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answers for the questions from
26 to 30.
The editorial policy of a popular daily is controlled by two chief factors. The first is the interest of the
advertisers from whom it gets money which enables it to keep up its large circulation. No widely
circulated newspaper dare support a public policy however much in the national interest that might
be fearing it might conflict with the vested interests of its advertisers. On the other hand, any product that refuses to pay the advertising rates of a powerful national organ will be denounced, smashed
and driven off the market. You are not allowed to use any product that dissociates itself from the
advertising ring. All this is understandable, since big circulation spells bankruptcy if the paper has
to depend on its sales for revenue.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answers for the questions from
26 to 30
The evidence couldnt be more surprising the Gangotri glacier is receding at an astonishing 23
metres per year. In fact, all the Himalayan glaciers are the fastest receding in the world. This raises
the dangers of widespread flooding and eventually, when water levels decline, the possibility of
massive environmental and economic problems for the people of Nepal, northern India and western China. Environmentalists have been crying about these frightening scenarios for years but they
are routinely dismissed as false people who are raising needless alarms. But ground realities show
that across the world, global warming is causing all manners of freak climatic phenomena. The
more significant are the El Nino effect in which the warming of ocean currents has led to the decline
of certain aquatic species. Globally, temperatures have been steadily increasing wiping out many
species of flora and fauna.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answers for the questions from
11 to 15.
The history of medicine includes the pre-scientific stage, before it was a science, and the
time when it became a science. The medicine of primitive people had all kinds of strange
explanation of diseases. The medicine men, whose main function was to cure diseases, based
their healing methods on the assumption that most illnesses were caused by supernatural
powers and that supernatural powers were required to cure them. The individual fell ill because
of having offended one of the Gods, or through the machinations of witchcraft or sorcery, or
through the unprovoked attack of an evil spirit. The task of the curer was to diagnose the disease, usually by divination techniques, and then to apply the spiritual remedy, such as retrieving a lost soul, removing a disease-causing object, or exorcising an evil spirit. Medicine men
also employed application of heat and cold, bloodletting, massage, and the use of herbs.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answers for the questions from
11 to 15.
The average life span of a human being throughout all history was twenty seven years. In the
nineteenth century, however, science and improved technology trebled life expectancy. As technological capabilities improved and life expectancy increased, the number of babies per family went
down, demonstrating the fact that nature keeps on balancing the population figure. After major

2
wars, when large number of young and healthy men are killed, baby-making increases. The birth
rate continues to rise for five years or so after the war ends until the score is rectified. All this
happens without conscious cooperation or even the knowledge of the human beings. When the
probabilities of human survival are poor, nature makes many babies. When the chance of mans
survival improves, nature reduces the number of new babies.
