1. [G3.93] A basketball is shot from an initial height of 2.4 m with an initial speed v0 = 12 m/s
directed at an angle 0 = 35 above the horizontal. (a) How far from the basket was the
player if he made a basket? (b) At what angle to the horizontal did the ball enter the basket?
[Challenge] Go to this link: http://www.fearofphysics.com/Proj/proj.html
During a basketball game practice, your friend has challenged you to make a jump shot 5m
away from the basket in one shot. What should you do in order to complete the challenge?
a) Derive an equation relating " , , , .
(" : initial height, : horizontal distance, : initial velocity, : angle with the horizontal)
b) You can solve the problem by fixing either the or . Which one is easier to solve?
c) What will happen if the player throw a tennisball instead of the basketball with the
same initial velocity at the same angle?

2. [G3.95] A rock is kicked horizontally at 15 m/s from a hill with a 45 slope. How long does it
take for the rock to hit the ground?

3. [G10.19] A cooling fan is turned off when it is running at 850 rev/min. It turns 1350
revolutions before it comes to a stop. (a) What was the fan's angular acceleration, assumed
constant? (b) How long did it take the fan to come to a complete stop?

4. [G10.21] A small rubber wheel is used to drive a large pottery wheel. The two wheels are
mounted so that their circular edges touch. The small wheel has a radius of 5.5 cm and
accelerates at the rate of 7.5 rad/s2, and it is in contact with the pottery wheel (radius
25.0 cm) without slipping. (a) Calculate the angular acceleration of the pottery wheel. (b)
Calculate the time it takes the pottery wheel to reach its required speed of 65 rpm.

5. [G3.62] A passenger on a boat moving at 1.70 m/s on a still lake walks up a flight of stairs at
a speed of 0.60 m/s, as shown in the figure. The stairs are angled at 45 pointing in the
direction of motion as shown. Write the vector velocity of the passenger relative to the
water.

6. [2011S1 Tut2:E061.1] Two cars pass each other as they move in the directions as shown. Car
A is traveling clockwise at a constant 50 km/h around a circle with radius 30 m. Car B is
moving straight in the direction 0.5 +

at a constant 100 km/h.

Given 12 = 30 and 26 = 25 ,
(i) What is the velocity of Car A with respect to Car B?
(ii) What is the acceleration of Car A with respect to Car B?
(iii) What is the displacement of Car A from the origin after 5 seconds?
Express your answers in vector form.

7. A 1200 kg steel beam is supported by two ropes. What is the tension in each rope?

8. [G4.69] The masses 2 and 6 slide on the smooth (frictionless) inclines fixed as shown in
the figure below.
(a) Determine an expression for the acceleration of the system in terms of 2 , 6 , 2 , 6
and g.
(b) If 2 = 32 , 6 = 23 and mA = 5.0 kg, what value of mB would keep the system at rest?
What would be the tension in the cord (negligible mass) in this case?
(c) What ratio, mA /mB , would allow the masses to move at constant speed along their
ramps in either direction?

G 4.69
9. [S5.34] An object of mass m1 hangs from a string that passes over a very light fixed pulley P1
as shown in Figure S5.34. The string connects to a second very light pulley P2. A second
string passes around this pulley with one end attached to a wall and the other to an object of
mass m2 on a frictionless, horizontal table.
(a) If a1 and a2 are the accelerations of m1 and m2, respectively, what is the relation between
these accelerations?
Find expressions for
(b) the tensions in the strings and
(c) the accelerations a1 and a2 in terms of the masses m1 and m2, and g.
