Entrepreneurship: How to Market Your Ideas

I.

Abstract
In order to market your ideas, one must be able to make a great presentation. Mr. Louie de Leon,
Managing Director of Montgomery and Fitch shares how one can make a more impactful Power Point
and how to better connect with the audience. He shares that building a bridge is key, where it can be
achieved by listening, feeling and holding the crowd, all while we are selling our why. I believe this talk
helped me in improving my marketing skills as it gave me insight as to what I should achieve when
presenting, taking everyone every step of the way while keeping an open mind.

II.

Introduction
The gist of the entrepreneurship talk was about how one can make a great delivery with their
presentations to future clients and business partners. The talk, which was given by Louie de Leon,
explained as to how ones powerpoint presentations need to be prepared and what they must do in order
to keep the attention of the crowd to the speaker and at the same time keep their interests and not be
boring.

III.

Methodology
Mr. de Leon started his talk by talking about how he makes his power point presentations. For him,
he states that using pictures for the whole slide makes the presentation more impactful, showing that its
more in-control compared to using wordy slides. The pictures however are not just placed on the slide
(usually in the middle), but we use the rule of thirds where we place the picture in one third of the slide
to make room for texts (partly). For him, a bridge between you (the speaker) and the audience must be
made, focusing on the content rather than the audience, keeping in mind our message.
First off, to build the bridge, one must step into the shoes of the audience. We must show our
sensitivity where we also listen, feel and hold them. According to him, to listen, he believes that Most
people do not listen with the intent to understand, they listen with the intent to reply. This saying is an
important idea because we need to also pay attention to the audience as well as respond to them in order

to get a good response and not be put on the spot. To feel them, one must know that one size does not fit
all where each person has different opinions, so its important to see eye to eye and give our respect to
the audience. We must be able to adapt because each presentation is not the same where one can be
performed outside or after lunch where everyone is sleepy and many more. Lastly, to hold them means
we never leave them in the dark. In his example, he cites the Wright brothers where the brother did not
just say that it is possible to fly, they took the audience every step of the way and soon, took them flying.
Finally, a recap must be done.
After building the bridge, we must then connect with the audience, to whom we are selling our idea.
In order to do this, we must show them why they need our idea and why they should buy it. For him,
presenting is like a painting where we start off blank. There is only one perception so we must be
humble and keep in mind that they know your idea but they dont know how youll present it. With that
being said, your idea must be cater to the argument, why- one should tell them what they need in life.
Moreover, to properly deliver our idea, we must simplify it, focus and most importantly, not complicate
it.

Learning
Watching Louie de Leon present his slides, I was very in awe as to how he presented it because he
had no cue cards or no notes in his powerpoint. Indeed, he was good in presenting and connecting to the
audience because I was listening the whole time! No dead air as well. With that being said, I found out
that his technique came to how he prepared his slides and how he communicated.
In his slide preparation, I learned that it is actually quite more effective to show only pictures in
order to catch the imagination of the audience. Against that of a person showing off a paragraph and just
expanding it afterwards, showing off only picture can make the audience intrigued as to what the
speaker will say. Also, I know about connecting to the audience (selling the why) but connecting a
bridge where we listen, feel and hold them came as a new learning for me because I thought you can
connect with them if you just know how to market your ideas alone.

Reaction

Coming into this talk, I believed that I can make a good presentation. But actually, watching Mr. de
Leon present his slides, showed me that I should improve more on how I must present my ideas. I know
about selling your whys, because thats the common notion especially in AECES in order to find the
problem and better ourselves. With that being said, building the bridge and connection with the audience
is extremely important so I can agree on the listen, feel and hold aspects that he is saying because
sometimes I seem to forget if my audience is still interested or if they have different opinions or if I miss
a step in taking them along with my idea. Because of this, I have to be more aware of possible reactions
that my audience can give, be more sensitive and open minded if my opinion do not match with others
and also be more concrete in the steps that I will take in marketing my ideas.
VI.

Conclusion
I have a lot to improve on my marketing skills, which for me is a very important necessity especially
that Ill be in the industry in a years time. Effective communicating skills must be shown and this talk
really gave me insight as to how I can improve myself in that aspect. Moreover, the little things like
following the rule of thirds when making presentations and the three steps (listen, feel and hold) are
things that Ill keep in mind because in my experience with Mr. de Leon, they indeed helped in keeping
the audience interested and them feeling as if they are along with the ride.
