WORD PROBLEMS INVOLVING FACTORING

1. The product of two consecutive integers is 272. Find the value of each integer.
Let n = the first integer
n+1 = the 2nd integer

(n) x (n + 1) = 272
n2 + n = 272
n2 + n -272 = 272 272
n2 + n -272 = 0
(n + 17)(n 16) = 0
n + 17 = 0 or n 16 = 0
n = -17
or n = 16
If n = -17 then the 2nd integer is n + 1 or -17 + 1 = -16 so the two integers are -17 and -16.
If n = 16 then the 2nd integer is n + 1 or 16 + 1 = 17 so the two integers are 16 and 17.
2. The product of two consecutive even integers is 528. Find the value of each integer.
Let n = the first integer
Let n+2 = the 2nd integer
(n)x(n + 2) = 528
n2 + 2n = 528
n2 + 2n -528 = 528 528
n2 + 2n -528 = 0
(n + 24)(n 22) = 0
n + 24 = 0 or n 22 = 0
n = -24
or n = 22
If n = -24 then the 2nd integer is n + 2 or -24 + 2 = -22 so the two integers are -24 and -22.
If n = 22 then the 2nd integer is n + 2 or 22 + 2 = 24 so the two integers are 22 and 24.
3. A rectangular swimming pool is twice as long as it is wide. A small concrete walkway
surrounds the pool. The walkway is a constant 2 feet wide and has an area of 196 square
feet. Find the dimensions of the pool.
Let w = the width of the pool = 15ft
Let 2w = the length of the pool = 30ft
A pool= (w)(2w)
A walkaway and pool= (w + 4)(2w + 4)
Area Total = Area Walkway and Pool Area Pool
196 = (w + 4)(2w + 4) - (w)(2w)
196 = (2w2 + 4w + 8w + 16) 2w2
196 = 2w2 + 4w + 8w + 16 2w2
196 = 12w+ 16
196 - 16 = 12w+ 16- 16
180 = 12w
12
12
15 = w
The dimensions of the pool are 15 ft by 30 ft.

4. The product of one more than a number and 4 less than the number is 36. Find the
number.
(x+1) (x-4) = 36
2

X -3x-4 = 36
2

X -3x-4-36=0
2

X -3x-40=0
(8+5) (x-8)= 0
x+5=0

x-8=0

x=-5

x=8

The numbers are -5 and 8

5. The length of a rectangle is 2 ft less than 3 times the width. If the area is 6ft2, find the
dimensions.
Let

x = width = 5
3x-2 = length =3(5)-2 = 13
wxh = A

3x-2

x(3x-2) = 65
x
2
3x -2x = 65
3x2-2x-65=0
(3x2-15x) (13x65) = 0
3x (x-5) + 13(x-5) = 0
(x-5) (3x+13) =0
(3x+13) (1x-5)=0
X=13
x= 5
3
The dimensions of the rectangle are 5 ft by 13 ft.

Of Binomial
1. Find the values for integers k and m that makes the following equation true.
(x1)(x+1)=x2+kx+m
?k
?m
(x1)(x+1)=x2+(1+1) x+(1)(1)
= x2+0x-1
2
x +0x-1 = x2+kx+m
k=0
m=-1

2. The height of a bungee jumper in the air t seconds after he jumps can be modeled by
the function y=12 t2 + 48t +55, where t and y are measured in feet. What is the maximum
height that the jumper reaches?
y=12 t2 + 48t + 55
y=12 (t2 + 4t )+ 55
y=12 (t2 + 4t + 4 )+ 55 48
y=12 (t + 2)2+ 7
The lowest point of the jumper is at (-2, 7).
The maximum height he reaches is 7 feet.
3. I'm thinking of a negative number. When I take the sum of this number and 22, and then
square the result, I end up with the number 99. What number am I thinking of?
(x+2)2=9(x+2)2=9
x+2=3x+2=3
x+2=3 or x+2=3x+2=3 or x+2=3
x=1 or x=5 x=1 or x=5
Since the number being thought of is negative, the answer is 55.
4. I'm thinking of a positive number.When I take the difference of this number and 33,
and then square the result, I end up with the number 1616. What number am I thinking
of?
(x3)2=16(x3)2=16
x3=4x3=4
x3=4 or x3=4x3=4 or x3=4
x=7 or x=1x=7 or x=1
Since the number being thought of is positive, the answer is 77.

5. The height of a football in the air t seconds after it is thrown can be modeled by the
function y = -16t2 + 96t + 3, where t and y are measured in feet. What is the maximum
height that the football reaches?
y = -16t2 + 96t + 3
y = -16(t2 6t) + 3
y 16(9) = -16(t2 6t + 9) + 3
y 144 = -16(t 3)2 + 3
y = -16(t 3)2 + 147
In this form, we can easily distinguish that the vertex of the football is at (3,147).
The maximum height it reaches is 147ft.
