Industry Snapshot
Australia has an engineering population of 322,523
including over 135,000 skilled migrants employed in
the engineering labour market.
The largest employer of qualified engineers is the
engineering and technical services industry, commonly
referred to as engineering consulting.

Working in Australia
Occupational Categories
Engineers Australia recognises three occupational
categories within the engineering team, based on
your educational qualifications:
Professional Engineer;
Engineering Technologist; and
Engineering Associate.
Registration
Separate from membership of Engineers Australia,
there are three voluntary national engineering
registers, aligned to the three recognised occupational
categories. Engineers Australia administers the
registers on behalf of the National Engineering
Registration Board which ensures that the registers
operate in the public interest. Currently Queensland is
the only state with legislation requiring professional
engineers to be registered (via the Board of
Professional Engineers Queensland).
