ANTIDIFFERENTIATION

Definition

A function F is called an antiderivative of a function f on an interval I if

F (x) = f (x),
for every value of x on I.

Illustration:

If F (x) = 4x3 + x2 + 5, then F (x) = 12x2 + 2x.

If we let F (x) = f (x), then we can have f (x) = 12x2 + 2x.
This means that f is a derivative of F, and F is an antiderivative of f.
Similarly, if G (x) = 4x3 + x2 17, then G (x) = 12x2 + 2x.
In general, if a function F is an antiderivative of a function f on an interval I, and if G is defined by
G(x) = F(x) + c, then G (x) = F (x) = f (x).

THEOREM

If f and g are two functions such that f (x) = g(x), x in I, then there is a constant k such that
f (x) = g (x) + k

Remarks:

Antidifferentiation is the process of finding the set of all antiderivatives of a given function. The symbol

denotes the operation of antidifferentiation, and

f ( x)dx F ( x) C
where
F (x) = f (x)

and

d(F (x)) = f (x)dx.

then evaluate the integral using any of the above mentioned rules. This methods eliminates evaluating the
