Alexa Grabelle, 15,

earns national
Jewish service award
for Bags of Books
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Fifteen-year-old Voorhees resident Alexa Grabelle has always
loved to read.
I realized that reading is really a way to open your imagination, Alexa said as she recalled
growing up in a home where
books were readily available and
reading was encouraged.
Yet when Alexa was 10 years
old, her life changed forever when
she learned of summer slide
the tendency for young students,
many of whom come from low-income families, to experience a
slide in their reading skills during the time spent away from
school during their summer
break.
When Alexa discovered a large
part of that slide stemmed from
the simple fact that many young
students from low-income backgrounds dont have easy access to

Voorhees police
crack down
on drunk driving
Law enforcement officers from
the Voorhees Police Department
will be cracking down on drunk
drivers as part of the 2016 Labor
Day statewide Drive Sober or Get
Pulled Over campaign. Running
through Sept. 5, local and state law
enforcement officers will conduct
sobriety checkpoints and roving
patrols, looking for motorists who
may be driving while intoxicated.
Drive Sober or Get Pulled
Over is a national campaign designed to raise awareness about
the dangers of drinking and driving through high-visibility enforcement backed up by public educational efforts, including national radio and television advertisements, posters, banners and
mobile video display signs. The
campaign looks to curtail impaired driving during the busy
summer travel season, including
the Labor Day holiday period.
Many people believe that after
a few drinks theyre still safe to
drive, said Gary Poedubicky, acting director of the state DHTS.
Even one drink can impair your
judgment and reaction time, putting not only yourself, but everyone on the road, in danger.
There is a zero tolerance message for this campaign. If drivers
are caught operating their vehicle
while impaired, they will be arrested, Poedubicky said.
In 2013, alcohol-impaired fatalities accounted for 27 percent of
New Jerseys motor vehicle fatalities.
As part of the initiative, the
DHTS provides grants to local law
enforcement agencies throughout
the state to run the two-week campaign.

in our opinion

PARCC is here to stay

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933

Like it or not, passing the standardized test will soon be a requirement

Richard Donnelly

he state Board of Education

adopted a measure earlier this
month that will require high
school students to pass the infamous
PARCC tests in English and math to
graduate high school.
While the controversial PARCC tests
have been administered for two years
now, they havent meant much to students futures. Starting with the class
of 2021, which will enter eighth grade
this fall, passing the Algebra I and
10th-grade English part of the test will
be a requirement to receive a high
school diploma.
PARCC has been a highly controversial standardized test since it was first
put into effect two years ago. Opponents feel, among numerous other
things, that the test is too hard, that
its too tough for kids to take entirely
on a computer and that it bucks the
nationwide trend of moving away
from standardized testing in general.
In the last four years, the number of
states that require students to pass an

exit exam for graduation has been reduced almost in half from 25 in 2012
to 15 currently. Concerns range from
low passing rates preventing a large
number of students from graduating
to simply too much testing.
New Jersey, though, feels differently.
State Education Commissioner David
Hespe says the 2021 effective date of
PARCC as a graduation requirement
will give school districts and students
enough time to adjust to the new test
and improve upon their scores.
Lets hope hes right on that last
point, as only 41 percent of test takers
passed Algebra I last year and only 44
percent passed 10th-grade English.
We tend to agree with Hespe on this
point, though. Many students who
took the test the last two years knew it

didnt matter, so it would be no surprise if we could assume that many

didnt take the test seriously. Make the
test a graduation requirement, and
students will be more likely to try
harder.
While we dont necessarily like the
PARCC test in all forms, were not so
hell-bent against standardized testing
as a graduation requirement, in general. Education in New Jersey has always been held to a higher standard,
and its paid off; our students rank
higher than most in other states.
Can PARCC itself be improved and
better reflect a students learning? Of
course. But theres time to do that before 2021. Frankly, every student who
graduates high school in our state
should have the ability to pass a test in
Algebra I and 10th-grade English. How
those tests are administered, and how
they align with what we teach our
children in the classroom are what
need to be ironed out between now and
when its too late.

Eastern BOE gets update from new

vice principal of athletics
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
With a new school year and
sports season soon to begin, the
Eastern Camden County Regional School District BOE spent
some time at its Aug. 17 meeting
to take one final look back on athletics at Eastern Regional High
School for the entire 2015-2016
school year.
Helping the board with that
look back was Jason Hill, Easterns newly appointed vice principal of athletics.
Hill, who graduated Eastern in
1997, also later served as a health
and physical education teacher
and coach at Eastern for seven
years before leaving in 2013 for an
administrative
position
at
Kingsway Regional High School.
Now back at Eastern, Hill said
he was happy to be home.
With that said, Hill outlined the
2015-2016 sports activities at Eastern, including the 27 sports programs Eastern continued to offer
from the previous 2014-2015
school year.
In regard to the number of students participating in sports programs at Eastern, Hill presented
information that showed the 20152016 year with 1,251 students in
total from fall, winter and spring
sports programs.
According to Hill, those numbers have been fluctuating slightly over the past years, as he also
presented the 2013-2014 school
year with 1,280 total students participating in athletics and the
2014-2015 year with 1,377 students
participating.
Overall, Hill said the figures
presented an exciting opportunity to work with a large group of
student athletes.
Hill noted the impact that athletics can have on a persons life,
and said that over the summer he
had attended a funeral, wedding
and retirement dinner, and the
common theme at all events was
that someone made a speech
about time spent participating in
athletics.
They talked about their expe-

rience in athletics, and the relationships they formed, the lessons they learned, and this is 30
years later, so again, Im excited
when I see this number of students to work with where we can
create these great experience for
them through athletics, Hill
said.
Moving on to more of his presentation, Hill also highlighted the
six conference championships
teams at Eastern won in the 20152016 school year in the Olympic
Conference American Division,
which he said was arguably one
of the toughest in the state.
Hill also noted another outstanding year for Easterns field
hockey team, which won its 17th
state championship with a 27-0
season, with the team continuing
to rank No. 1 in the state and
country.
With those records in mind,

Hill said he hoped to follow the

advice that former vice principal
of athletics Phil Smart gave him,
which was imparted to Smart by
his predecessor as well.
Dont be the first athletic director to lose a state championship, because now were up to
17 in a row, so the pressure is on,
Hill said.
Looking forward to the 20162017 school year, Hill said he was
excited for a new press box to be
built at Easterns McAleer Stadium and a new scoreboard for the
freshman field/girls lacrosse
field.

New tool to combat the spread

of mosquito borne illness
By Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez
The Camden County
Freeholder Board's Mosquito Commission and
Health Department is
leveraging technology to
allow residents to report
suspected mosquito breeding locations online. The
Board is taking more
proactive steps as the threat of mosquito
borne illnesses expand by providing new tools
to residents and employees to make the operation more effective and efficient.
Having a digital format for residents to go on
their computers or phones and report an infestation or breeding area is invaluable. Our
Mosquito Commission regularly checks several thousand suspected mosquito breeding
sites across the county. This new tool will
allow them to assist residents in their surveillance efforts and help them determine sites in
need of remediation.
Camden County residents can visit
www.camdencounty.com<http://www.camdencounty.com> to report mosquito hot spots.
There they will also find the mosquito spraying schedule and tips for keeping your yard
mosquito-free.
The county website has a link to the easy-touse reporting form. When you click on report
a mosquito issue in your town, you can select
your town from a drop-down menu and provide the exact location of the problem. In addition to describing the issue, you can also
attach a picture right in the form.
Residents will receive updates from the mosquito commission on the status of their report. Mosquito spraying and remediation
efforts are scheduled on an as needed basis
based upon the results of the Mosquito Commission's investigation.
The mosquito sprayings take place early in
the morning when mosquitoes are most active. The mosquito spray is not harmful to hu-

mans or pets, but you

should avoid direct contact
if you have respiratory
concerns or are sensitive to
irritants.
This is a simple and efficient new tool that can be
accessed anywhere at any
time to pinpoint the location of mosquito breeding locations. In Camden County, technology has joined the fight
against mosquitoes and the diseases they
carry.
Although there have been no locally transmitted cases of Zika Virus from mosquitoes
reported in New Jersey at this time, the Camden County Department of Health and
Human Services is working closely with the
CDC and the New Jersey Department of
Health to actively monitor the situation. The
prevalence of West Nile Virus (WNV) and
Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) are still
major concerns of the Camden County Health
Department and Mosquito Commission.
The single most important thing you can do
as a homeowner to protect yourself and your
family from mosquitoes is eliminating standing water around your yard. All pre-adult
mosquito stages (eggs, larvae, and pupae)
must be in stagnant water in order to develop
into adult mosquitoes.
For more information, or for another way to
report a problem, contact the Camden County
Mosquito Commission at (856) 566-2945 or

About 80,000 books collected

ABOUT
Continued from page 1
books when out of school, Alexa
decided to make a difference.
Thats when Bags of Books was
born.
Bags of Books is the book drive
program Alexa started where,
throughout the year, she fills her
familys garage with new and
gently-used books ranging from
pre-school to high school level.
Alexa, her family and volunteers then hold book distribution
events in schools throughout the
area with low-income students
where students can fill bags with
books to take home to keep their
reading skills sharp until the next
school year starts.
Literacy is the key to their future, and Ive learned from my research that literacy is a key to
predicting in children how successful theyll be when they grow
up, Alexa said.
Since she began her program,
Alexa said shes collected about
80,000 books, with average events
offering anywhere from 2,000 to
4,000 books to kids in need.
Recently, Alexas efforts were
even nationally recognized when
she was selected as one of only 14
recipients of the Diller Teen
Tikkun Olam Award.
For the past 10 years, the Helen
Diller Family Foundation has
supported the annual award,
which is bestowed to Jewish teens
across the nation who exemplify
the tenets of the Jewish concept
of Tikkun Olam, a Hebrew
phrase that means repair of the
world.
As a recipient of the reward,
Alexa will receive $36,000 she can
use to support her philanthropy
or to further her education.
Alexa said she was grateful to
the Helen Diller Family Foundation for honoring her and her
work, and she noted her Jewish
faith has translated into the work
she does.
Faith is definitely a big part of
my life my Jewish values have

instilled in me the importance of

helping others and giving back to
my community, Alexa said.
In turn, Alexa said the communities shes given back to have
made her feel amazing through
countless thank you notes and
personal stories from students affected by her work.
It shows that the impact of my
work goes so much father than I
really thought it would, and it's
incredible to see how much of a
difference my work is making in
peoples lives, Alexa said.
Overall, Alexa said shes happy
with the work shes done so far,
but theres still more to do, so
shes asking the public to clean
out their closets for a great cause.
Those looking to donate new or
gently used books to her Bags of
Books program or who might be
interested in setting a collection
drive at their school or business
can contact Alexa at bagsofbooks@yahoo.com
Every book counts, Alexa
said.
