Induction and Mentoring

Shadowing Week
What is shadowing?
Shadowing is an experience in which a new teacher
can observe either one teacher for a whole day, or
multiple teachers during the day, based on specific
practices the new teacher wants to see.
When is Shadowing Week?
Shadowing week is the week of October 17th. Mentees will pick one day during
that week to shadow specific teachers and will request a substitute for the full
day, if needed.
How can mentors help?
Mentors should talk to their mentees about what kinds of experiences they
would like to see more of. It may be observing another teacher who teaches
similar classes. Maybe a mentee has mentioned wanting more ideas for
classroom management, or wants to observe a very well-structured lesson. Your
observations should also inform a schedule that is most beneficial for your
mentee.
Mentees and mentors will collaborate on a schedule for the day of shadowing.
Mentors must initiate contact with all teacher(s) that the mentee will observe
and inform them of the focus of the observation.
Mentees will be able to follow-up with the teachers they observe for further
questions or conversation.
