HT-1600 DIFFUSION

PROCESS

HT-1600 DIFFUSION
PROCESS
Diffusion process creates
a metallurgical bond between

both

materials.
The corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of the base
material remain the same. Excellent for acid resistance and wear.
Polishing to a mirror nish (> 10 RMS) reduces the coefcient of
friction and ensures a tight seal.
100% dense infusion, once polished prevents process from adhering
to the surface.
Exceptionally hard (1200 - 1600 Vickers) resists stress cracking
when bent as much as 90 - 180 (see photo next page).
Temperature range 0C - 832C.

Straightening of Sample-1 Using a Bend Test

Rig

S.S 316 substrate, 60 mils thick.

Coated and fused with the gates.
Coated on both sides (like the gates).
As fused deection due to grit blasting, coating and fusing
process (this is expected due low thickness of the samples).

Worst case scenario* of the Duplex 2205

S.S gates, we fully reverse bent sample 1
to 207 mils (it was permanently deformed
the other way from the original bending).

*Duplex 2205 S.S has approximately twice the

yield strength as austenitic stainless steel (300
series is austenitic).

Straightening of Sample-1 Using a Bend Test

Rig Some cracks appeared.
No coating separation nor spalling.

We ipped the sample over, to

straighten it (we used an extra
sample to distribute the load).
No cracking occurred.

Straightening of Sample-2 Using a Bend Test

Rig
We used more backing plates and did a few load

applications at various places (always using low

amplitude displacement).
We eventually succeeded in straightening
operation.
We used what we learned with sample 1.
We didnt do any full reverse bending.
It required a few load application at various
places
(always
using
low
amplitude
displacement).
Flipping the sample a few times was also
necessary.
It went well: No Cracking and no spalling.

Centre Deection

We took standard Bend Test type samples of stainless steel.

Stainless steel substrate 316 and 410 were coated
simultaneously.
They reacted differently to all the process steps.

Deection
S.S 316

S.S 410

As sprayed: the coating is strained for

both substrates (S.S 316 & 410).
Fused: the coating was strained on S.S
410 and in compression on S.S 316.

Cracking of S.S 410 is most likely due to

dramatic change of stainless steel
substrate and not due to fused coating as
such.
