Rotary's Areas of Focus

Message from the R.I. President.

John F. Germ

Forty years ago, a man named

George Campbell, the owner of the
company I worked for, invited me to
join Rotary. Back then, that was a
common practice in the United
States. Your boss invited you to join
Rotary because he thought it would
be good for business and good for
the community, and you said yes. Its
not surprising that our membership
surged during that period.

George warned me not to use Rotary

as an excuse to slack off at work. Even
so, I always had time to attend lunch meetings and serve on
committees. I never had to worry that taking a long lunch once
a week would hurt my advancement, or what my boss would
think about the occasional Rotary phone call at work.

R.I. President

Today, things are different. Companies are less generous about

time, and not every manager looks favorably on community
service. Its hard to enjoy a Rotary meeting when youve got
emails piling up on your phone. Its harder than ever to balance
work with Rotary and the model that gave us so much growth
a few decades ago is part of whats holding back our growth
now.
Thats why the recent Council on Legislation adopted some
innovative measures that allow clubs to vary their meeting
times and expand their pool of prospective members. Clubs
have more flexibility now to respond to the needs of their
members and to clear away as many barriers to membership as
they can. But theres one barrier to membership that only you
can remove, one thing that every prospective member needs
to become a Rotarian: an invitation to join a Rotary club.
Whenever I tell a group of Rotarians that we need more willing
hands, more caring hearts, and more bright minds to move our
work forward, everyone applauds. But those hands, hearts,
and minds wont magically appear in our clubs. We have to ask
them to join. And an invitation to Rotary is something that only
you can give. An invitation is a gift. Its saying to someone, I
think you have the skills, the talent, and the character to make
our community better, and I want you to join me in doing that.
Im the president of Rotary International, but the only club I can
invite someone to join is the Rotary Club of Chattanooga, Tenn.
I cant make your club or your community stronger. Only you
can do that by inviting the qualified people you know to join
you in Rotary Serving Humanity.

August is dedicated month for

Membership
And
New Club Development
Celebrate by inducting new members
And formation of new Clubs

Message from the District Governor.

My Dear Rotary leaders,
Just when I thought that I was getting
ready to assume the responsibilities
as the District governor of this
illustrious district, the first month of
the new Rotary year was already over
and what a delightful month it had
been.
It was a great honor to be installed as
the DG in the dynamic presence of
Dr. N. Subramanian over 500 Rotarians including all our
eminent Rotarians from the District
District Governor
and beyond. It was indeed a great
honor to receive the collar in the gracious presence of the Raja
of the Rotary past RI President Raja Saboo, Foundation
Trustee and PRID Sushil Gupta and PRID and former Governor
of Uttarakhand,SudershanAgrawal. A pledge by all our
presidents to serve the Rotary with grace and dignity and
adhering to the objectives of Rotary and the 4-Way Test was
appreciated by all. The presidents also committed a
contribution of at least $100 by every member of every club
(EREY) in this centennial year. Two new Arch Klumph Society
members and a substantial additional contribution by an
existing AKS member were a great beginning for the special
Foundation year. In addition to individual commitments,
several clubs too made their commitments to the Foundation.
It was very heartening to start the year with commitments in
excess of half a million dollars.
The enthusiasm and the energy shown by the all-star team of
Presidents and their clubs has been exemplary. Large scale and
systematic tree plantations by the Rotarians, Rotaractors and
Interactors has been very heartening. Emphasis on monitoring
and caring for these plants has been given special attention.
The commitments to Blood Donation Camps and interest in
thalassemia have increased following a visit to our Blood Bank
by the Assistant Governors and our District Blood Donation
team. This in turn is likely to enhance our achievement in this
life saving Rotary activity. Awareness about the WINS and basic
Literacy Projects and especially the focus on Happy Schools is a
clear indication of a wonderful future.
My grateful thanks to the Presidents and the members of the
various clubs for their kindness and hospitality on my visits to
their clubs, their projects and also for kindly accepting my
request to avoid bouquets and mementos. This alone has
saved over 30 minutes at each installation. The participation in
the GOV by the club members has been very enthusiastic and I
have thoroughly enjoyed these interactions. The highlight of
my GOVs has been the personal interaction with the young
generation.
The District installation and the Membership Development
Seminar were both well attended with meaningful interactive
sessions.
The celebrations of the centennial year of The Rotary
Foundation will begin with the Arch C Klumph Society( AKS )
dinner on the 14th August at Taj Palace in New Delhi. Let us
celebrate 100 years of doing good in the world and contribute
generously to our Foundation, while preparing for the next
century of service
Im looking forward to the wonderful year of bigger and bolder
Rotary projects, which are meaningful and sustainable.
Lalitha and I will be walking with you in all your endeavors.

PRIP Arch C Klumph

Father of The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International

We should not live for ourselves alone,

but for the joy in doing good for others. Arch C. Klumph
A Rotarian had a dream. A dream that he followed for years,
telling Rotarians what an endowment fund could do for Rotary
and the communities of the world. This great and
extraordinary dreamer was none other than Archibald C.
Klumph, more popularly known as Arch Klumph, a member of
the Rotary Club of Cleveland. He was destined to rise to great
heights.
Arch was born on June 6, 1869. He joined Rotary as a founder
member of the Rotary Club of Cleveland in the year 1911.
Within 2 years of joining Rotary he was elected President of the
club in 1913. In 1914 he was elected as director of the
International Association of Rotary Clubs and served on the
Constitution and By-laws Committee and the Executive
Committee. In an act of major importance and contribution to
the Rotary International Arch Klumph wrote the International
Constitution in 1915-16. He was also responsible for the
standard Club Constitution as also the formation of Rotary
Districts and establishment of attendance reports. Every
Rotary club organized since that time has adopted this
constitution as its own and a number of older clubs also
changed theirs to agree with it.

Grants, Global Grants (2013), 3-H program (1978), PolioPlus

(1984-85), Rotary Grants for University Teachers (1985-86),
Rotary Peace Program(1987-8), Discovery Grants Program
(1989).
The Trustees of The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International
formed the Arch C. Klumph Society in 2004 to give special
recognition to donors who have contributed a minimum of $
250,000 and to pay tribute to PRIP Archs many contributions.
On this Centenary year of The Rotary Foundation, the entire
Rotary fraternity bows to this great visionary, his great
contributions and pay our respectful homage.

Celebration of the Centennial Year of

The Rotary Foundation

He rose to position of the 6th International President of Rotary

in the year 1916-17, merely 5 years after becoming a Rotarian.
Not an ordinary achievement, but then, Arch was also not an
ordinary man.
During the International Convention at Atlanta on June 18,
1917, he proposed the creation of an Endowment fund for
Rotary for the purpose of doing good in the world in
charitable, educational and other avenues of community
service. At this meeting the Rotary Endowment Fund was
born. The endowment received its first contribution of $ 26.50
from Rotary Club of Kansas City, Missouri. There was no
looking back since then. The fund soon grew to more that $
5000 and was renamed The Rotary Foundation of Rotary
International in the year 1928. Aptly, Arch Klumph is also
known as the father of TheRotary Foundation.
Two years later, the Foundation made its first grant of $500 to
the International Society for Crippled Children. The same year,
first Foundation program was established by the name of
Fellowship of Advanced Studywhich was the forerunner of the
Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship program. The Foundation
has launched manyprogram thereafter viz; Group Study
Exchange(1965-66), Award for Technical Training(1965-66)and
Grants for Activities in Keeping with The Objectives of The
Rotary Foundation (1965-66). . . . later known as Matching

Kalyan Banerjee
PRIP & Trustee Chair
The Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair Kalyan Banerjee and
R.I.District 3011 celebrate the 100 years of The Rotary
Foundation. This is the first celebration event in India in this
landmark year.
This is the moment in time to recognize the Arch C. Klumph
Society Members and Endowment Donors. This is also an
opportunity for Rotarians to remember that The Rotary
Foundation was formed with the intent of helping millions of
underprivileged people all around the world. It is time to
carve our names in people's hearts and to make every effort
to bring them out of misery and despair.

PRAROHAN R.I. Distt. 3011 INSTALLATION CEREMONY

PRAROHAN, the Installation Meeting of R.I. District 3011 to
formally install Dr. N. Subramanian as the District Governor was
held on Saturday 2 nd July 2016 at Surya Sofitel Hotel, New Delhi.
It was a solemn ceremony but the ambience was spectacular. The
theme of the evening was the inception of Rotary and a tribute to
Paul P. Harris who had the vision in the early twentieth century to
establish this organization. It was also a tribute to Arch C Klumph
who sowed the seed of the Arch Klumph Society way back in 191617 when he was the sixth President of Rotary International. He
created a fund for endowments for the purpose of doing good in
the world. The evening also remembered the four founders of
Rotary, Paul P. Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele and Hiram
Shorey. The banquet hall had images and write up on all these
founders and visionaries of Rotary and the audience was
transmitted back to the early twentieth century. The dcor for the
day was designed and implemented by none other than Director
Meets Rtn Rajiv Sagar and RAnn Rameeta Sagar.
The event started with a motivational and a very appropriate song
Saathi Haath Badhana rendered by Meenakshi and Rtn Hitesh
from Rotary Club of Gurgaon. This was followed by the customary
lighting of the lamp. the audience was then treated to a beautiful
dance performance in Bharatanatyam style by Ankita, Akanksha
and Dakshina who are disciples of the renowned danseuse Smt
Saroja Vaidyanathan.
The Change of Guards ceremony is symbolic of change and
perpetuity in Rotary. The exchange of collar took place in the
presence of PRIP Raja Saboo and PRID and Foundation Trustee
Sushi Gupta. The Governors Home Club Banner was handed over
by Members of R.C. Delhi Lutyens to Members of R.C.Delhi South
Central. It was a moment in time that was both emotional and
poignant. It was an event to be cherished forever by DG Dr. N.
Subramanian and his home club because they were creating their
own space in the history of Rotary International. The RAnns of
Rotary Club of Delhi Central, DG Dr. N Subramanians home club,
expressed their joy in the form of a dance that was beautifully
choreographed and performed by the talented Rtn Harjeet. Dr.
Subra and Dr. Lalitha joined the fun and revelry and celebrated this
moment with them.
DG Dr. N. Subramanian in his first address as DG of Distt. 3011
spoke about the joys of giving. He spoke about all the good work
done by Rotary and how there is no organization of people who are
doing good to people and making their life better. He spoke about
Rotarys commitment to eradicating polio from the face of the
earth. He told his team of Presidents that they need to focus on
making India a developed nation. His spoke about how important it
was to support initiatives like Literacy, T-E-A-C-H, Happy School
and Wash in Schools (WinS). Needless to say the Presidents and
the team of Rotarians were all charged and motivated to work
relentlessly towards a better tomorrow.
PRID and Foundation Trustee Sushil Gupta and PRIP RAJA SABOO
shared their words of wisdom and made very thought provoking
and meaningful speeches where they commended the effort made
by IPDG Sudhir Mangla and congratulated Dr. N. Subramanian on
taking over the reigns of District 3011 in a year that was so
important and significant for TRF. They spoke of the importance of
the Rotary theme and how every Rotarian should be committed to
Rotary Serving Humanity. PRIP Raja Saboo is a brilliant orator and
his speech ended with a thundering applause and a standing
ovation from the audience.

DISTRICT MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR

R.I. DISTRICT 3011
The District Membership Development Seminar of R.I. District 3011 was held on Saturday 30 th July 2016 at Multipurpose Hall, India
International Centre and was co-hosted by all Rotary Clubs of Zone 2 R.C. Delhi Rajdhani, Delhi Lutyens, Delhi South Extension, Delhi
Vasant Valley, Delhi Vasant Kunj and Delhi Heritage. The event was one of the best attended seminars in recent years. Rotary
Coordinator, PDG Rtn. Vijay Jalan, was the Chief Guest and key-note speaker at the event.
DG Dr. N. Subramanian in his opening remarks emphasized on the
importance of membership development and about how
members were an integral part of any organization. He also
reiterated the need to induct members from the new generation
because they are the ones who will be able to make a significant
contribution in realizing the goals of the organization.
District Trainer PDG Ranjan Dhingra said that growth is the lifeline
of any business. He quoted R.I. President (2001-2002) Rick King
who said Membership is the business of Rotary. It is the most
significant and important part and we need to pay attention to it.
Rotary Membership is stagnant at 1.2 million Rotarians but in
South East Asia membership is growing exponentially and we are
proud of that.

PDG Rajesh Batra stated that the Districts membership goals this
year are : to induct 3100 or more members in R.I. District 3011, to
sustain membership retention of 90%, achieve a 10% growth in
membership and to induct at least 60 women members. It makes
us proud that R.I District 3011 has the largest number of new clubs
Last but not the least Rotary Coordinator PDG Vijay Jalan in his
address titled SIZE MATTERS MORE THE MERRIER focused on
membership retention and growth and also spoke in length about
membership development. He stressed on the need to infuse
Rotary with new vigor and different perspectives and that would
be possible only if we induct young members into our fold. While
we do try and introduce new members we have not succeeded in
encouraging the youth of India to join the organization.

This time also brings the festival of Teej celebrating the union
of Shiva and Parvati, the two great cosmic forces. Apparently
she prayed for hundreds of years to be united with Shiva. Ladies
decked up in colourful attires . . . the mehendhi, . . .the
choodhiyan,. . . the jhoole and singing songs inviting their
spouses to join them . Rotarians, RAnns and spouses
celebrated Teej with great enthusiasm and fervor.
There is always the down side... this is also the time of rainwater
creating puddles, traffic jams, negotiating irritating potholes,
sometimes dangerous too, on the road. This is also the time
when the virus and bacteria thrive, bringing on the flu and fever.
Almost every household had been affected with this. It is so
scary that one may not end up contributing to the
"dengue" statistics.
Despite the rains, festivities, the flu and fever, the spirit of
Rotary reigned supreme everywhere in the District. Rotarians
along with their spouses participated in multitude of activities.
Be it the District Seminar on Membership, or their own club
installations, their projects, the tree plantations, the blood
donation camps, the eye, medical and dental checkup camps,
visiting their schools and distributing boks, uniforms etc. to
children. Members participated with renewed passion and
vigour under their new President and the new team.
So, keep up the good work. Let us remember on our
independence day that many in our country are not privileged
enough to be really independent. We can and we must do a lot
more to educate them and awaken them .
Wishing you all good health and happiness, and loads of
fellowships of chai, pakode, samosas and jalebis, I am signing
off with loads of love.

From the desk of the Editor

The month of July that flew past was full of exciting events and these have
been covered in as much detail as was possible in this edition of Pravakta. It
was an important month not only because it was the beginning of the new
Rotary year but also because the focus was on Membership Development. This
great organization needs the best thinkers, strategists and workers to take our
goals forward. While it is imperative that we bring more members on board it
is also equally important to pay attention to their development. Time spent on
getting the right people is time well spent and that is the basic requirement
today.
It was wonderful to go through the projects that every club had put their heart
and soul into. Planting trees and looking after the environment seemed to be
one of the focus areas in July. There is an old Chinese proverb that the best
time to plant a tree was twenty years ago and the second best time is now.
Lets work towards ensuring that the trees we plant today are healthy and
strong twenty years later.
