Obama pays tribute to

female civil rights leaders

Woman reportedly goes

over Niagara Falls

WASHINGTON President Barack Obama paid

tribute Saturday to black
women for their role in
helping shape American
democracy, calling them
the thinkers and the
doers who made things
happen at the height of the
civil rights movement half a
century ago.
Obama said black women
did the behind-the-scenes
work of strategizing boycotts and organizing marches while others got the
credit. He said they have
been part of every great
movement in American
history, and that every
American has benefited as a
result.
Women were the foot
soldiers. Women strategized boycotts. Women
organized marches, Obama said in a keynote address to the Congressional
Black Caucus Foundations
annual awards dinner.
Even if they werent allowed to run the civil rights
organizations on paper,
behind the scenes they
were the thinkers and the
doers making things happen each and every day,
doing the work that no one
else wanted to do.
Women made the movement happen, he said.
But Obama said that
while black women and
girls have made progress
and are opening more of
their own businesses and
graduating from high
school and college at higher rates, they are still overrepresented in low-paying
jobs and underrepresented
in management.

Freeway shooting suspect:

Im the wrong guy
PHOENIX A landscaper arrested in a series
of Phoenix freeway shootings told a judge Saturday
that authorities have the
wrong guy as investigators
stood by their detective
work that traced the gun to
the suspect after he took it
to a pawn shop.
Leslie Allen Merritt Jr.
was charged with counts
including aggravated assault, criminal damage,
disorderly conduct, carrying out a drive-by shooting
and intentional acts of terrorism.
In a brief court appearance, a prosecutor said the
21-year-old should face a
high bail after drivers spent
the last three weeks on
edge.
The suspect presents a
dramatic and profound
threat to the community,
said Ed Leiter, of the Maricopa County attorneys
office.
Superior Court Commissioner Lisa Roberts set bail
at $1 million, and Merritt,
who had remained quiet
during the proceedings,
asked in a soft-spoken voice
to address the court.
All I have to say is Im
the wrong guy. I tried telling the detectives that. My
guns been in the pawn
shop the last two months. I
havent even had access to a
weapon, he said as he
stood handcuffed in a black
and white striped jail uniform.

Hollywood Wives novelist

Jackie Collins dies
LOS ANGELES Jackie
Collins, the bestselling
author of dozens of novels
including Hollywood
Wives that dramatized the
lives of the rich and treacherous, died Saturday.
Collins died of breast
cancer in Los Angeles,
publicist Melody Korenbrot
told The Associated Press.
She was 77.
She lived a wonderfully
full life and was adored by
her family, friends and the
millions of readers who she
has been entertaining for
over 4 decades, Collins
family said in a statement.
She was a true inspiration, a trail blazer for women in fiction and a creative
force. She will live on
through her characters but
we already miss her beyond
words.
Collins death was first
reported by People magazine.
Unlike her older sister
Joan Collins, the Dynasty
actress who was part of the
1980s Hollywood glitterati,
Jackie Collins chose to
document LA lives in her
pulpy, page-turning fiction.
She began publishing
novels in the late 1960s and
put out several in the 1970s
but had her breakthrough
and became a celebrity in
her own right with 1983s
Hollywood Wives.
It sold more than 15 million copies, led to sequels
and became a hit TV miniseries.

Clearly, the presence of
aircraft with air-to-air combat capacity and surfaceto-air missiles raise serious
questions, Kerry said.
The Russians have deployed at least one such

military matters and spoke
on condition of anonymity.
