Power Transformer Management System

Client: State owned distribution company, Karnataka, India

Project Background
Utility companies generally have insufcient documented data on their assets, of which transformers constitute around
60 percent in costs. As a result, the utility companies are unprepared to handle emergencies and the resulting cost
overruns.
Lack of maintenance of the assets adds to the existing woes. Poorly maintained transformers fail due to over loading,
surge voltages due to poor lightning protection, etc. With little information on inventory, the situation often lends itself
to arbitrary decisions. Transformer capacities are not in sync with demand.

Challenge
Keeping track of transformer performance and its physical condition can go a long way in effective management of this
asset and thereby improving power supply quality. The Client wanted to keep track of more than 70,000 transformers
which cater to nearly 2.5 million consumers.
