APPhysics1Syllabus
APPhysics1isanalgebrabased,introductorycollegelevelphysicscourse.Thecourseexplores
traditionalNewtonianPhysics(kinematics,dynamics,energy,momentum,rotation,simpleharmonic
motion,andmechanicalwaves)withanintroductionofcircuitry.Thecoursestressesinquirybased
learningtodevelopscientificcriticalthinkingandreasoningskillsinstudents.Twentyfivepercentof
classtimeisdevotedtolaboratorywork.Inlab,studentswilluseavarietyofmethodstocollectdata;in
class,theywillexploreconceptsusinginteractivesimulations,collaborativeactivities,andformative
assessments.

GradeDetermination
Astudentsgradewillbeaveragedaccordingtocategories75%testsandquizzes,15%labs,and10%
classparticipation.Testsareworth100pointsformostsubjectsandquizzesarebetween515points
each.ThenumberoflabsduringagradingperiodvariesaccordingtothesubjectbutItrytohaveone
eachweek,eachworthbetween1525points.Theclassparticipationgradeincludescompletionof
homework,activeparticipationduringclasstime,andexemplaryconductduringexperiments.
Homeworkisgivenalmostdaily;itshouldnottakemuchlongerthan30minutes.Ifhomeworkbecomes

onerous,pleaseseeme.Whilehomeworkisnotgradedonaccuracy,itisgradedoncompletion.The
semesterlettergradeandscaleisdeterminedbytheschooldistrict.Gradeswillbepostedeachweek.
Tests
Testsareamixtureofmultiplechoiceandfreeresponsequestions.
Onlypencilsanderaserswillbeallowedatyourdeskduringatest.

LaboratoryWork
TheAPCollegeBoardrequiresthatstudentskeepalabjournalwhichcollegesmayaskto
reviewforAPcredit.Therefore,studentsarerequiredtokeepa3ringbinderasalabnotebook.
Labnotebookswillbekeptintheclassroomandwillbereviewedperiodically.

Studentsare
expectedtofollowsafetyguidelinesatalltimes.
Everystudentisrequiredtosignalabsafetyagreement.Failuretoobserveallsafetyrules
duringanexperimentwillresultinexpulsionfromthelabandazerofortheexperiment.
Studentsworkingroupstocollectdatabuteachlabreportmustbethestudentsownwork.
Copyinganswerstolabquestionsisnotallowed.Copyinganswerswilladverselyaffectthelab
gradeandtheclassparticipationgrade.
MakeupLabs:Youmustmakearrangementsforamakeuplabtoavoidreceivingazeroonthelab.
Sometimesitisntpossibletomakeupalab.Ifthisisthecase,youwillbegivenanassignmentinplace
ofthelab.

Homework
Homeworkwillbegradedoncompletion,i.e.,thestudentshasattemptedatleast80%ofthe
problems.
Studentsmaycollaborateonhomeworkbutcopyingaclassmateshomeworkisnotallowed
andischeating.Studentsdiscoveredcopyinghomeworkwillget0pointsfortheassignment.
Homeworkgradesareenteredonasubject(notweekly)basis.

AcademicDishonesty
Studentsareexpectedtoperformtheirownworkonallassignmentsinthiscourse.Dishonestyonan
exam,quiz,homework,classworkorlabreportwillresultinagradeofzeroforthatassignmentandan
academicdishonestyreportwillbefiled.Schoolpolicydictatesthatparents,departmentchair,and
administrationwillbenotified,thestudentwillreceiveazeroontheassignment,andadministrators
willenforceotherdisciplinaryaction.

Attendance
Regularattendanceisthemostimportantcomponenttosuccessinthisclass.Studentscanneverreally
makeuporcompensateformissedclasstime.AssignmentswillbepostedonMoodleandmywebsite
eachday.
ExcusedAbsences:Makeupworkwillonlybeallowedforexcusedabsencesandabsences.All
arrangementsformissedworkshouldbemadeimmediatelyuponreturningtoclassexceptfor
prearrangedabsences.Studentswithprearrangedabsencesshouldmakearrangementsfor
missedworkbeforetheabsence.Makeupassignments/testswillnotbeidenticaltotheoriginal
assignment.
Unexcusedabsences:Departmentpolicyisthatworkmaynotbemadeupforunexcusedabsences.

Behavior
Studentsareexpectedtobehaveinamaturewaythatdoesnotdetractfromthelearningenvironment.
Disrespectofanykindwillnotbetolerated.Disciplineproblemswillbehandledbyoneormoreofthe
followingways;teacherstudentconference,phonecalltoparent,detention,teacherparent
conference,and/orreferraltotheoffice.
Labmisbehavior(dangerouslabactions)willresultinexpulsionfromthelaboratoryandazeroonthe
assignment.
InclementWeatherPolicy
AllstudentsmustcheckMoodledailyforassignmentsandupdatesevenifschoolhasmetforapartial
day.

Anyunauthorizedelectronicdeviceusewilladverselyaffectastudentsgrade.Useofanyelectronic
device(exceptapprovedcalculators)areprohibited.Thepenaltyofadevice(onoroff)foundona
studentduringatestwillbeazeroontheassessment.

Thecontentforthecourseisbasedonsixbigideas:
1. Objectsandsystemshavepropertiessuchasmassandcharge.Systemsmayhaveinternal
structure.
2. Fieldsexistinginspacecanbeusedtoexplaininteractions.
3. Theinteractionsofanobjectwithotherobjectscanbedescribedbyforces.
4. Interactionsbetweensystemscanresultinchangesinthosesystems.
5. Changesthatoccurasaresultofinteractionsareconstrainedbyconservationlaws.
6. Wavescantransferenergyandmomentumfromonelocationtoanotherwithoutthepermanent
transferofmassandserveasamathematicalmodelforthedescriptionofotherphenomena.

Thecoursefocusesonsevenscientificpractices:

problems;

3. Engageinscientificquestioningtoextendthinkingortoguideinvestigationswithinthecontextof
theAPcourse;

LaboratoryInvestigationsandtheSciencePractices
TheAPPhysics1coursedevotes25%ofclasstimetolaboratoryinvestigations.Thelaboratory
componentofthecourseallowsthestudentstodemonstratethesevensciencepracticesthrougha
varietyofinvestigationsinallofthefoundationalprinciples.

Thestudentsuseguidedinquiry(GI)oropeninquiry(OI)inthedesignoftheirlabinvestigations.Some
labsfocusoninvestigatingaphysicalphenomenonwithouthavingexpectationsofitsoutcomes.In
otherexperiments,thestudenthasanexpectationofitsoutcomebasedonconceptsconstructedfrom
priorexperiences.Inapplicationexperiments,thestudentsuseacquiredphysicsprinciplestoaddress

practicalproblems.Studentsalsoinvestigatetopicrelatedquestionsthatareformulatedthrough
studentdesigned/selectedprocedures.

Allstudentsareexpectedtokeepalabjournal.Studentsareexpectedtorecordtheirobservations,
data,anddataanalyses.Dataanalysesincludeidentificationofthesourcesandeffectsofexperimental
uncertainty,calculations,resultsandconclusions,andsuggestionsforfurtherrefinementofthe
experimentasappropriate.

OutsidetheClassroomLabExperience:
Inadditiontolabs,studentswillberequiredtodooneexerciseoutsideofthelaboratoryexperience.
Followingtherotationunit,studentswillpickoneofthefollowingprojects:
Studentswilluseavideoanalysisprogram(LoggerPro)toanalyzethemotionofatoyasit
moves(eitherinastraightlineorinacircle).Studentswillprovidethetoyanddotheirown
videotaping.Theywillthenpresentadescriptionoftheanalysisbothquantitativelyand
qualitatively,includinggraphs.Theirpresentationwillbepeercritiquedand/orquestioned,and
theywillanswerthequestionswithsupportingevidence.
Usinganaccelerometerappfortheirsmartphone(SPARKvueisone),studentswillanalyze
accelerationstheyexperienceeveryday.Theycantakethedatawhilemovingdownthehall
betweenclasses,whileontheschoolbus,onanamusementparkride,oranythingelsethey
want(withinreasonsafetyfirst!).Studentswillpresentadescriptionofthemotionthey
experienced(notonlyacceleration,butvelocityanddisplacement,too),bothquantitativelyand
quantitatively,includinggraphs.Theirpresentationwillbepeercritiquedand/orquestioned,
andtheywillanswerthequestionswithsupportingevidence.
Studentswilltaketwopicturesoneofanobjectintranslationalequilibrium,andoneofan
objectinrotationalequilibrium.Theobjectsalsomusthavemorethanthreeforcesactingon
them.Theywillthenconstructfreebodydiagramsforeachobject,anddeterminethe
magnitudeofeachforceactingoneachobject.Fortheobjectinrotationalequilibrium,
studentswillalsofindthemagnitudeofeachtorqueactingontheobject.Studentswillpresent
theirworkinclass.Theirpresentationwillbepeercritiquedand/orquestioned,andtheywill
answerthequestionswithsupportingevidence.

RealWorldPhysics:
Inorderforstudentstobecomescientificallyliteratecitizens,studentsarerequiredtousetheir
knowledgeofphysicswhilelookingatarealworldproblem.
Allstudentswillbeassignedtoseveralteams,andeachteamwillresearchsourcesofenergy
(solar,fossilfuels,wind,geothermal,hydroelectric,etc.)andthecostbenefitofeach.Students
teamswillpresentfindingstotheclassanddebatethemeritsoftheirassignedenergysource.
Inaddition,studentsmaypickoneofthefollowingassignmentstocomplete.
StudentswillpickaHollywoodmovieandwillpointoutthree(ormore)instancesofbad
physics.Theywillpresentthisinformationtotheclass,describingtheinaccuraciesboth
qualitativelyandquantitatively.
Studentswillresearchathrillrideatanamusementpark.Theywillpresentinformationtothe
classonthesafetyfeaturesoftheride,andwhytheyareinplace.

Studentswillpresentinformationtotheclassonnoisepollution,anditsdangertobothhuman
andanimallife.Theywillalsoproposesolutionstonoisepollutionproblems.

Falsifyinginformation:eitherwrittenororal.

includesclasswork,homework,tests,quizzes,projects,labs,etc.
Theunauthorizeduseofacademicenhancementmaterialsincludingcliffnotes,studyaids,
books,formulas,calculators,electronicdevices,cellphones,orothersourceswithoutthe
permissionofthespecificteacher.

AcademicConsequences:

Offensewillbedocumentedinthestudentsrecordbyteachersubmittingareferraltoan
administrator.
ConsequencesimposedbytheHonorCouncilmayincludedetention,InSchoolSuspension,and/orup
to10daysofOutofSchoolSuspension(inaccordancewiththeCMSRightsandResponsibilities
Handbook).

OtherViolationsoftheHonorCode:
ViolationsoftheHonorCodearenotlimitedtoacademicdishonesty.Vandalism,stealing,lying,
bullying,orotherwiseunacceptable,undesirablebehaviorisnotpermitted.Independence
strictlyfollowstheCMSRightsandResponsibilitiesHandbookindeterminingconsequencesfor
suchviolations.
