Get Off The Road...

Whats the first thing that I would
tell someone who wasnt familiar with
Nashville?
Who wasnt familiar with Washington County?
Get off of Illinois 127.
Get off of Interstate 64.
Get off of U.S. 51, or 177, or 15.
Just take that turn and see what we
have to offer.
We have so much to offer.
You can head way off, or you can go
just a few feet off the path, but no matter what, there are plenty of choices...
If Festivals are your thing, head
to the Oakdale Eggstravaganza, or the
Hoyleton Hofbraufest, or Santaland in
Ashley. Visit Polishfest in DuBois.
In the fall you can have a lot of fun
visiting both the Okawville Wheat Festival and the Nashville Fall Festival.
If you want a cozy place to rest
your head, try the Best Western U.S.
Inn in Nashville, or the the Super 8 in
Okawville.
If you feel like roughing it, just
south of Nashville is the Washington

block of South Kaskaskia Street, both operated by the Washington County Historical Society.
In Okawville, you could check out the historic Original Springs Hotel, complete with mineral baths and spas, or head to the Schlosser Complex Historic Site in June for Heritage Days.
Do you want a bite to eat?

Stop by the Country Kitchen in

Oakdale, the Blue room in New Minden or Kretzers in Hoyelton. Stop by
Girolamos, El Indio, Subway, The Diner,
or Dairy Queen in Nashville.
Just got a second to hop off of the
interstate for a bite? Visit Little Nashville
or McDonalds in Nashville, or Subway,
Dairy Queen or Burger King in Okawville.
Check out church picnics and dinners at St. Ann, St. Michaels, Trinity, St.
John, St. Charles and so many more.
The fact is, the day, the week and
the hour dont matter, theres always
something happening here.
And whether you head to Nashville, Okawville, or any of the other
beautiful communities in Washington
County, there are places to go, people
to see, and fun to be had.
All you need to do is get off the
road. Who knows what youll find. You
take that turn though, and you are
entering a whole world of different
experiences and stops that are all worth
getting out of the car for.
Just get off the road and see.

To Protect And Serve

A small town police officer does a lot of things, said Nashville
Police Chief Brian Fletcher.
Nashville is served by a police department led by Fletcher that
includes a lieutenant, five full-time officers and three part-time officers.
Fletcher has 13 years of law enforcement experience, starting as a
deputy with the Washington County Sheriffs Department in 2000. He
moved to the Nashville Police Department in 2002, and was promoted
from lieutenant to police chief in July 2010.
The department provides 24/7 protection to the community,
performing a variety of tasks.
We basically do everything in law enforcement, he said. That
includes basic patrols, investigations, city ordinance violations and
traffic control. Officers also respond to emergency medical calls and
to fires, and are sometimes called out for animal complaints.
We are here to help and serve as best we can, the chief said.
The officers are assisted by Ava, a Belgian Malamois that is the
departments second K-9 dog. The dog is trained to sniff out drugs
and can be used for tracking lost persons or fleeing suspects and for
handler protection.
While the crime rate is extremely low in Nashville, there are plenty
of calls to keep the department busy.
Fletcher said domestic disputes occupy much of his officers time,
and while home burglaries are rare, there are a number of thefts from
vehicles.
Motor vehicle accidents and other traffic complaints are another
major component of the job.
The police department also conducts a number of community
service projects during the year.
They include presentations on drug awareness and prevention
at local schools, bicycle safety courses and safety programs for pre-

schoolers.
The department also participates in the annual Shop With A Cop
in which officers take underprivileged children Christmas shopping.
The department also assists with the annual Washington County Relay
For Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
Members of the Nashville Police Department are: Chief Brian
Fletcher, Lieutenant Greg Hopfinger, Patrolmen Jared Wilke, Brock
Styninger, John Paul Kubiak, Brad Wetsel, Josh Stevens, Steve Fletcher
and Kent Ahlers. Melissa Hopfinger is the administrative assistant.

Washington County Ambulance Service
serves the entire 564 square miles of Washington County.
John Felchlia has been administrator since
October 2004 and first joined the ambulance
service as a paramedic in May 1998.
He is in charge of eight full-time paramedics and 25 part-time personnel who provide
around-the clock emergency services 365
days a year.
The ambulance service has three fully
equipped ambulances, two of which are
staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
A third unit is held in reserve, and part-time
personnel are called in, if the other two are
in service at the same time, Felchlia said.
The ambulances are equipped with the
latest in life-saving technology and equipment. For example,
field data on heart attack patients can be transmitted to hospital emergency room physicians who can confirm the possible
diversion of the ambulance to a hospital with cardiac cath lab
capabilities, thus saving time by bypassing other hospitals.
Personnel are trained to operate this complex equipment,
which adds to their life-saving capabilities.
The services primary duty is to provide 911 emergency
responses on a variety of calls, ranging from motor vehicle
accidents to persons who have fallen ill.

They also do transfers of patients between hospitals and

respond to all structure fires in the county to provide medical
service to firefighters and fire victims.
The service also provides non-emergency transport and a
wheelchair service for people who need rides to doctors appointments. Personnel also stand by at local football games.
The ambulance service also is involved in a number of community activities. Felchlia said personnel conduct CPR and first
aid classes and trains first responders for area fire departments.

To Find A Good Book

In 1878, the city fathers of Nashville petitioned the Secretary of State
to form a corporation, which was designated the Nashville Library Association. It wasnt until the early 1900s that the people of Nashville had a
location where they could borrow books.
In 1923, the Womens club officially opened a library for leisure reading in what was the former Nashville City Hall. In 1943, the library was
moved to the building which once had been the city jail. In 1962, the
library board bought the J.P. Carter residence on Kaskaskia Street for use
as the library. In 1992, the City of Nashville purchased the Veterans of
Foreign Wars building at 219 East Elm Street (the present location), and
remodeled the building.
In 2006, the Librarys Board of Trustees, with the help of the Nashville
City Council, began planning to expand the library building. A grant for

$125,000 from the Illinois State Librarys Live and Learn Construction
Grant program was awarded to the library. The grant was matched and
expanded by the Nashville City Council. Ground was broken in March
2007 and the work was completed in January 2008. The current library
contains over 6,000 square feet and houses a collection of approximately 20,000 books, videos, and audio books.
The Nashville Public Library joins over 400 other libraries as members
of the Illinois Heartland Library System. Library patrons have access to
almost 2 million items in the online patron access catalog called SHARE,
of which the Nashville Public Library is also a member.
The librarys public access computers offer Internet access, as well as
software such as Microsoft Office, and World Vital Records. Wireless connectivity in the library remains a popular feature. A copier, fax machine
and scanning services are also available for patron use at a fee. Genealogists enjoy the use of a digital microfilm machine for looking at old newspapers or church records and may save their findings or print them out.
The Nashville Public Librarys website at www.nashville.lib.il.us posts
a calendar of events, Friends of the Library information, links to both the
online catalog and a free digital downloading service, as well as many
resources and research sites.
The Friends of the Nashville Public Library are vital to the librarys programming and fundraising efforts.
The library staff offers assistance to library visitors from Mondays
through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2
p.m. For more information, the Nashville Public Library may be reached

Parents And Teachers, Together

Nashville Community Consolidated District 49 is a pre-kindergarten through 8th
grade district at 750 East Gorman Street
in Nashville. Grades K-4 are housed in the
primary school, while grades 5-8 and the
pre-K program are down the hall in the
middle school.
The district serves 580 students starting
with at-risk 3 and 4 year-olds in the early
childhood pre-kindergarten program, and
then sends its graduating 8th grade graduates to Nashville Community High School
District 99.
State test scores from third through
eighth grade consistently show that students meet or exceed state standards at
the 80th percentile and higher. District 49
attributes that success to a commitment
to keeping class sizes around 20 students
or even lower, a variety of small group
instructional strategies, and an extensive
list of parental volunteers.
District 49 works in coordination with
the Kaskaskia Special Education District
801 for students that require a little more
tender loving care. KSED is a great partner
in helping determine what type of individualized education program is appropriate
for each needy student.
The primary school addition was added

to the existing middle school site in 2005,

and the middle school campus was updated
during the construction.
A very active Parent/Student Organization (PSO) continuously provides educational and entertaining activities for all
students. Assemblies, fundraisers, field
trips and classroom supplies are just some
of the activities and materials provided by
the PSO.
Students on the primary school side are
treated monthly to a non-detention activity
to reward good behavior. Middle school
students are treated quarterly.

Down At The Fair

the Washington County Fair persists.
The 2016 fair featured the same 4-H exhibits and auction, the same demolition derby, the same tractor pulls, and the same fun
for the whole family.
In Washington County, the fair is a tradition at the beginning of July that wont be
going anywhere soon.

Times are tight for county fairs in 2016,

with the State of Illinois cutting funds, but in
Washington County, the show must go on.
While other fairs have been cutting
events, or even cancelling the whole show,

The Great Outdoors

In 1959, the State of Illinois purchased 160

acres of natural area near Nashville which
provided excellent cover and food for upland
game. Additional acreage has been added
in succeeding years, currently totaling 1,440
acres. In 1960 the Department of Natural Resources constructed the lake in the areas between two small creeks. This long, thin lake
is surrounded by fields and woods. With the
addition of picnic and camping areas, this site

has become a popular visiting site for

outdoorsmen and
nature lovers.
For a special afternoon get away, the
seven picnic areas
scattered
around
the lake provide a
perfect setting. They
are located in heavily wooded, grassy
areas and have tables, outdoor stoves,
drinking water and
playground equipment. Whether you
choose Ponderosa,
Lazy L, or one of the
other picnic sites,
you will be assured of scenic surroundings.
Bring your own picnic basket, or purchase
sandwiches and soft drinks at the concession
stand.
Enjoying the out-of-doors is easy with tent
and trailer spaces readily accessible. Electricity
and disposal are available for trailers. A shower building is also located in the camping area.
Two Campground Cabins are available in
the campground. There is no cooking, pets,

grill are provided outside. A full size bed, two
sets of bunk beds, table and chairs are provided inside. The Cabins have heat and a/c
available with two ceiling fans. You must provide your own bedding. A $45.00 reservation
fee is needed in advance to hold the Cabin
for a particular date, then $45.00 per day after that. The $45.00 reservation fee is nonrefundable.
Fishermen will delight at the possibilities for
catching their limits of largemouth bass, bluegill, sunfish, crappie, channel catfish and carp.
For boaters, two launching ramps are available as well as boat docks. There is a limit of 10
horsepower for motorboats. Both boats and
motor boats are available for rental for fishing
or just a ride on the lake.
For an invigorating walk, a seven-mile-long,
marked trail is available. This trail circles the
lake and hikers can enjoy viewing the majestic
trees, beautiful wildflowers or the numerous
birds and animals residing in the area.
Acre after acre of wildlife habitat will challenge all levels of sportsman. Shotgun and archery hunting are allowed, with an abundance
of deer, turkey, and small game available. All
hunters must check in at the check site. Contact the site ranger for game species, hunting
times and regulations.

Music And Drama

For those interested in catching a show

during the spring and summer in Nashville, the Washington County Arts Council is
pleased to be able to offer plenty of musical
performances with their summer concert series as well as annual Shakespearian performances.
In the past, the summer concerts series took place on the Washington County
Courthouse lawn. However, due to renova-

tion there the past

two years, the 2016
series was held at
Nashvilles Memorial Park.
In 2017, the series will be On the
Square once again.
Acts featured in
2016 included the
Threshermen, Dave
Hyllas Good Times
Polka Band, The
NCHS Concert Band,
George Portz and his
Bluegrass Friends
and D.C. Cusanelli.
On July 4, the
concert series presented musical entertainment leading up to the fireworks at
the park by The Beaucoup Bottom Band.
The plays are performed by Stone Soup
Shakespeare, a troupe which also leads discussion on the plays before the event at the
Nashville Public Library, the events co-sponsor.

Hornet Athletics, Legacy Of Excellence

It is a tradition of excellence with few peers
in the state.
The Nashville Community High School athletics programs have a history of success with few
equals among schools of its size.
Six state championships and dozens of regional and sectional championships have established a pattern of winning that carries over
into all sports.
Assembly Hall has been the venue for some
of the best basketball in southern Illinois. Nashville won a state championship in boys basketball in 1978, and finished as state runner-up in
2014 after losing a triple-overtime barnburner.
After more than a century of basketball, the
Hornets have compiled a .633 winning percentage.
Not to be outdone, the girls basketball program has had even more success. The Hornettes have finished in the top four teams in the
state seven times, including a state championship in 2013. The Hornettes basketball team has
won at least a share of conference every year
since 2001. With over 800 victories in the programs history, Nashville girls basketball is one
of the best programs in the state
That is not to say that all of the action happens in the gym. Nashvilles softball program
has two state championship in the last 20 years,

and the baseball team has been to state four

times and wins seven times out of ten.
Spring success is not limited to the diamonds,
as the Hornets track squad has a state championship and runner-up finish, and the girls tracksters have won six sectional titles.
When school gets back in session, NCHS
golfers also hit the links. The Hornettes squad
has had finished in the top three in state three
times, including a state championship in 2013.
The boys team has two third-place finishes at
state and has qualified for the big event more

than a dozen times.

The Hornet football team is coming off of a
final four berth in Class 2A in 2015. The volleyball team has also consistently won, while the
Hornet country team has also been to state six
times, and the girls team has four appearances
at the state meet.
No matter what sport and what season,
chances are good that Nashville will have a
team that other teams do not relish facing.
Winning is what puts Nashvilles athletic programs consistently among the best in the state.
