NetworkCriteria

1. Performance:Performancecanbemeasuredbymeansoftransit
time, response time, number of users, type of transmission
medium, capabilities of the connected hardware and the
efficiencyofthesoftware.
2. Reliability:Reliability is measured by the frequency of
failure,thetimeittakesalinktorecoverfromafailure.
3. Security:Network security is protecting data from
unauthorizedaccess.

NOVELLNETWARE
NovellNetWareisthemostpopularnetworksysteminthePCworld.
It provides transparent remote file access and numerous other
distributed network services, including printer sharing and
supportforvariousapplicationssuchaselectronicmailtransfer.
NetWarewasdevelopedbyNovell,Inc.,andintroducedintheearly
1980s.

all of the NetWare protocols and maintains the networks shared

NOVELNETWAREPROTOCOLSUITE
Novell provides a suite of protocols developed specifically for
NetWare.
ThefivemainprotocolsusedbyNetWareare
1. MediaAccessProtocol.
2. Internetwork Packet Exchange/Sequenced Packet Exchange
(IPX/SPX).
3. RoutingInformationProtocol(RIP).
4. ServiceAdvertisingProtocol(SAP).
5. NetWareCoreProtocol(NCP).

MediaAccessProtocols:
The NetWare suite of protocols supports several mediaaccess
protocols,including

Ethernet/IEEE802.3,

TokenRing/IEEE802.5,

FiberDistributedDataInterface(FDDI),and

PointtoPointProtocol(PPP)

IPX(InternetworkPacketExchangeprotocol
):

becommunicatedwithislocatedonadifferentnetwork,IPXroutes
the information to the destination through any intermediate
networks.
It is a datagrambased, connectionless, unreliable protocol that

SPX(SequencedPacketExchangeprotocol):
Control protocol at the transport layer (layer 3) for reliable,
connectionorienteddatagramtransmission.
SPXissimilartoTCPintheTCP/IPsuite
RoutingInformationProtocol(RIP):
Facilitate the exchange of routing information on a NetWare
network.
InRIP,anextrafieldofdatawasaddedtothepackettoimprove
the decision criteria for selecting the fastest route to a
destination
ServiceAdvertisementProtocol(SAP):
It is an IPX protocol through which network resources, such as
fileserversandprintservers,advertisetheiraddressesandthe
services they provide. Advertisements are sent via SAP every 60
seconds. This SAP packet contains information regarding the
serverswhichprovideservices.
Using these SAP packets, clients on the network are able to

NetWareCoreProtocol(NCP):
It defines the connection control and service request encoding
