Euthanasia
Euthanasia refers to the practice of intentionally ending a life in order to
relieve pain and suffering. In the Netherlands, euthanasia is understood
as "termination of life by a doctor at the request of a patient".
Jurisdictions where euthanasia is legal include the Netherlands, Belgium,
Luxembourg, Switzerland, Estonia, Albania, the US states of Washington,
Oregon and Montana.
Classification of euthanasia
Euthanasia may be classified into three types:

Euthanasia conducted with the consent of the patient is termed

voluntary euthanasia. Voluntary euthanasia is legal in U.S. states,
Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
Euthanasia conducted where the consent of the patient is
unavailable is termed non-voluntary euthanasia. Examples include
child euthanasia, which is illegal worldwide.
Euthanasia conducted against the will of the patient is termed
involuntary euthanasia. Involuntary euthanasia is usually
considered murder.

Euthanasia debate
In some countries there is a public controversy over the moral, ethical,
and legal issues of euthanasia. Those who are against euthanasia may
argue for the sanctity of life, while proponents of euthanasia rights
emphasize alleviating suffering, bodily integrity, self-determination, and
personal autonomy. Proponents of euthanasia have presented two main
arguments: a) that people have a right to self-determination, and thus
should be allowed to choose their own fate; and b) assisting a subject to
die might be a better choice than requiring that they continue to suffer.
Physician sentiment
A survey in the United States of more than 10,000 physicians came to
the result that approximately 46% of physicians agree that physicianassisted suicide should be allowed in some cases; 41% do not, and the
remaining 14% think it depends.
The Sea Inside is a 2004 Spanish film written, produced, directed and
scored by Alejandro Amenbar. It is based on the real-life story of Ramn

Sampedro (played by Javier Bardem), who was left quadriplegic after a

diving accident, and his 28-year campaign in support of euthanasia and
the right to end his life.
