Abstract
Wi-Fi network enables mobile user to access internet
and other communication services within a particular
area. However all mobile users are not satisfied with the
access to the network. The number of users keeps
increasing because of which there arises the problem of
traffic congestion, increase in call drop rate, higher
delays, limited access points capability etc. These
problems makes wifi network inefficient. Hence, to
make the efficient usage of the wifi network a model is
proposed to optimize the resource utilization through
linear programming. In this project, the results of
analyze is on 802.11 wireless LAN network traffic is
presented. Wi-Fi network traffic is analyzed using
Linear Programming model in LINDO tool. The process
involves formulation of various parameters into linear
equations, subject to certain constraints and solving them
using LINDO. Linear Programming is used when the
resources are limited. The paper present an efficient
model designed to optimize the wifi resource utilization
with limited resources constraint.

INTRODUCTION

WiFi (IEEE 802.11) is widely used wireless network in

campus environment which operates at 2.4 and 5GHz
frequency channel and provides 11 Mbps data rate to
mobile users. All college and corporate campus are
employed with WiFi access to give high speed mobile
access to online information to make them more
productive. Therefore WiFi has become ubiquitous
across the world. Sometimes the service providers may
need to support highly dense population in any given
location. For instance a lecture hall or an auditorium can
hold populations of 100, 500 or more individuals with
devices that need network connection simultaneously.
But the increase in user population affects the efficient
usage of the resources and is limited to capability of
legacy Access Points. Also the users expect the network
access with higher speed, larger coverage area, wider
range of mobility, less interference, low call drop rate
etc. Therefore the users are subjected to face the

challenges of speed, convenience, connectivity, and

traffic and response time on any given WiFi network.
Hence the objective of this paper is to provide an
optimized model of the WiFi network.

switch to different networks to provide seamless switch

therefore aimed to provide optimized results for VHO
decisions. Their computation complexity for such
analysis with parameters like Received Signal Strength,
traffic load and delay were seemed to be less. In
literature [2] scheduling problems based on dynamic
broadcasting were solved using LP model to minimize
the delivery cost and maximize the spectrum usage
efficiency. The author used network connection interface
to optimize the performance of broadcast spectrum. The
paper revealed that simulating analysis model on
scheduling the spectrum enabled better performance in
the application of television data transmission and
showed better cost model. In literature[3] author

wireless network are vulnerable to Denial of Service

interference waveforms are very much needed in
wireless networks.In literature [4]wifi network

literature [5] traffic analysis were carried to study
performance of the network. The model analysis packet

downstream packet size is larger than the upstream.
However researches were not carried to maximize the

different classes of traffic and the paper reveals that
mobile users had different mobility characteristics with

resource management to mobile users. In literature [7]

LP has been applied to address the problem of wifi
transmitter interference. In literature [8] LP have been
widely used in random fuzzy multi objective problem for
developing a decision making model for optimization. In
literature [9] LP has been used for domain fusion
problem. This helped to solve complex problems. Thus
study of wifi network analysis is an important issue that
has to be handled through research. This motivates the
use of linear programming to solve multi objective
problem. In literature[10] performance of integrated
Wifi and Wimax network are extensively studied for
different codecs. Simulations were carried with OPNET
tool model to study the quality of data. However the
paper takes the fixed topology and did not consider the
mobility model into account. Therefore studying
wireless network and analyzing the performance is a
challenging problem in recent research.
This paper designs Wifi network into a linear
programming model. The objective is to maximize the
resource allocated to the access point. This enables
more number of mobile users to get connected to the
access points. This leads to optimizing the performance
of network. The model takes bandwidth, data rate and
signal strength as factor to study the performance
measure of wifi network.

network and by taking into account the number of

users, the data rate, the access point specifications
and coverage area, thereby to make wifi facility
available to maximum number of users.

ANALYSIS MODEL
Linear Programming is a mathematical tool used to
find optimal solution to problems subject to a set of
constraints. It gives the optimal solution for
resource allocation problem. To find the optimized
results we first identify the decision variables,
objective functions, function constraints and the
variable boundaries. Hence LP is used to create a
model for the wifi network by predicting the
required amount of resources for a particular

The allowable decrease of current
coefficient value of A is infinity. This shows us
that this value can be reduced to infinity without
affecting the optimized value. Also the reduced
cost is given as 0, which implies that the

increase in usage of the bandwidth by users. The
analysis was made at various access points. The

bandwidth usage at AP1, 18% at AP2, 5% at AP3,
10% at AP4 and 6% at AP%.

IV CONCLUSION
The analysis of 802.11 network traffic shows that
the performance of wifi network can be made
optimal through Linear Programming technique.
Data is gathered from the existing real time
wireless environment through Netsurveyor tool
and optimized value is obtained from the
simulation in LINDO tool. On comparison of these
two values, it is shown that there can be possibility
in increase in usage of the resources. Using LP,one
could know about the minimal requirement of the
resources for a particular network. Hence, the
portion of the resources that remain unutilized is
shown through this process. Thus, through this
necessary steps can be taken to ensure the better
usage of the available network resources. Using
this methodology it would be able to design an
optimized model for any particular network
scenario. Therefore, Linear Programming method
helps to derive an optimized solution to the WiFi
network.
