Course Description: This course is an applied technical study of harmony

and counterpoint focusing on the written and aural aspects of the commonpractice period, but includes repertory from jazz and popular musics. The
concepts and topics of this course include notation; keys, scales, and modes;
rhythm and meter; two-part counterpoint, triads and seventh chords, and
tonic-dominant voice leading. The course will develop students' musical
literacy and creativity through written, analytical, transcription and
composition assignments, and their aural skills through dictation, sight
singing, and transcription exercises.
Attendance policy:
Students are expected to attend every class and to be punctual. Assignments
must be handed in on the day they are due; a late assignment will incur a
penalty of one letter grade for each class session it is late, unless prior
arrangements have been made with the instructor. After three unexcused
absences in each class, a students final grade will be lowered by 3%
per additional absence. Students with extenuating circumstances may
appeal to the instructor and the department chair for an exception to this
policy.
Required textbook:
Clendinning/Marvin, The Musicians Guide to Theory and Analysis, 3rd
Ed. (workbook/textbook).
Nancy Rogers and Robert Ottman, Music for Sight-Singing, 9th Ed.
On-line Resources All assignments, announcements, correspondence, and
supplementary handouts will be posted on the Blackboard sites for these
courses.
Supplies: Music manuscript notebook, a folder or ring binder to keep
handouts in order, pencils, earphones, and an eraser. The use of a
smartphone or iPad with a KB app is permitted during class (not during a
quiz). All other use of electronic media will not be tolerated in class.
