Finegrainedsteelsarepronetocoldcrackingduetohydrogen
absorption.Theyshouldbepreheatedslightlyandweldedwitha
relativelylowspecificenergy,toreducetheheataffectedzone.

InmanycasesthemanufacturerthatusesASTMsteelswillfindthatit's
notnecessaryfortheweldtomatchthemechanicalpropertiesofthe
steel,andwillthereforetypicallyutilizelowhydrogen,highlyductile
E7018/E70S36/E71T1electrodes.
Whenusingthelowhydrogenelectrodes,thepreandpostheat
treatmentrecommendationsarefrequentlyeliminated,howeverfroma
weldqualityperspectivealwaysensurethattheweldlocationsaredry,
themetalisover60F,andthatrustandmillscaleisremovedfromthe
weldarea.Alsoevenwhenheattreatmentisnotuseditsfrequently
beneficialtonotallowthemultipassinterpassweldtemperaturesto
exceed200F

specificationsensureyouuselowhydrogenelectrodesthen,
(a)Establishtheweldingprocedure.
(b)QualifytheweldandHAZproperties.EnsuretheafterweldandHAZ

hardnessandstrength.
