Direction : In Question nos. 191 to 200, you

have two brief passages with 5 questions each.
Read the passages carefully and choose the
best answer to each question out of the four
alternatives and mark it by blackening the
appropriate oval [ ] in the Answer Sheet.
PASSAGE-1
Ocean water plays an indispensable role in
supporting life. The great ocean basins hold about
300 million cubic miles of water. From this vast
amount, about 80,000 cubic miles of water are
sucked into the atmosphere each y ear by
evaporation and returned by precipitation and
drainage to the ocean. More than 24,000 cubic
mil es of rain desc end annuall y upo n the
continents. This, vast amount is required to
replenish the lakes and streams, springs and
water tables on which all flora and fauna are
dependent. Thus, the hydrosphere permits
organic existence.
The hydrosphere has strange characteristics
because water has properties unlike those of any
other liquid. One anomaly is that water upon
freezing expands by about 9 per cent, whereas
most other liquids contract on cooling. For this
reason, ice floats on water bodies instead of
sinking to the bottom. If the ice sank, the
hydrosphere would soon be frozen solidly, except
for a thin layer of surface melt water during the
summer season. Thus, all aquatic life would be

destroyed and the interchange of warm and cold

currents, which moderates climates, would be
notably absent.
Another outstanding characteristic of water
is that water has a heat capacity which is highest
among all liquids and solids, except ammonia.
This characteristic enables the oceans to absorb
and store vast quantities of heat, thereby often
preventing climatic extremes. In addition, water
dissolves more substances than any other liquid.
It is this characteristic which helps make
oceans a great storehouse for minerals which
have been washed down from the continents. In
several areas of the world these minerals are
being commercially exploited. Solar evaporation
of salt is widely practiced, potash is extracted
from the Dead Sea, and magnesium is produced
from sea water along the American Gulf Coast.
191. Which one of the following is correct?
According to the passage, the hydrosphere
is not
(A) responsible for all forms of life
(B) able to modify weather
(C) a source of natural resources
(D) in danger of freezing over
192. What is the reason why fish can survive in
the oceans?
(A) They do not need oxygen
(B) Ice floats on the surface of the oceans
(C) Evaporations and condensation create
a water cycle
(D) There are currents in the oceans
193. What is the authors main purpose in the
passage given above?
(A) To describe the properties and uses of
water
(B) To illustrate the importance of conserving
water
(C) To explain ho w wat er is used i n
commerce and industry
(D) To reveal the extent of the earths
ocean masses
194. What is the reason that climatic extremes
are prevented in nature?
(A) A vast quantity of water is held in the
great ocean basins
(B) The heat capacity of water is very high
(C) Solar evaporation from the oceans uses
high technology.
(D) Water dissolves many substances

PASSAGE-2

I passed all the other courses that I took at

my university, but I could never pass botany. This
was because all botany students had to spend
several hours a week in a laboratory looking
through a microscope at plant cells, and I could
never see through a microscope. I never once
saw a cell through a microscope. This used to
enrage my instructor. He would wander around
the laboratory pleased with the progress all the
students were making in drawing the involved
and, so I am told, interesting structure if flower
cells, until he came to me. I would just be
standing there. "I cannot see anything", I would
say. He would begin patiently enough, explaining
how anybody can see through a microscope, but
he would always end up in fury, claiming that I
too could see through a microscope but just
pretended that I couldnt. "It takes away from the
beauty of flowers anyway." I used to tell him. "We
are not concerned with beauty in this course",
he would say. "We are concerned solely with what
I may call the mechanics of flowers." "Well", Id
say, "I cant see anything". "Try it just once again",
hed say, and I would put my eye to the microscope
and see nothing at all, except now and again a
nebulous milky substancea phenomenon of
maladjustment. "You were supposed to see a
vivid, restless clockwork of sharply defined plant
cells. "I see what looks like a lot of milk", I would
tell him. This, he claimed, was the result of my
not having adjusted the microscope properly, so
he would readjust it for me, or rather, for himself.
And I would look again and see milk.

196. The author thinks that he could not pass

the botany examination because:
(A) He did not take any interest in the
subject
(B) He was partially blind
(C) He did not like microscopes
(D) His teacher was not devoted to job
197. The difference in attitude between the
instructor and the author was that while
the:
(A) Inst ructo r w as patien t wi th the
microscope; the author was impatient
with it
(B) Instructor was concerned with the
mechanics of flowers; the author was
concerned more with the beauty of
flowers
(C) Instructor could adjust the microscope
properly; the author did not learn to
adjust the microscope
(D) Instructor was interested in flowers;
the author was disinterested in the
beauty of flowers
198. The instructor was enraged wit h the
authors persistent failure to see cells
because he thought that the author:
(A) Pretended not to see them
(B) Was only interested in the mechanics
of flowers
(C) Coul d only s ee a nebulous milky
substance
(D) Lacked common sense
199. The author thought that the instructor:
(A) Attached too much significance to the
laboratory work
(B) Failed to appreciate brilliant students
(C) Was himself pretending to be a scholarly
person
(D) Used to get upset with him

like milk t o t he a uthor because the
instructor:
(A) Actually adjusted the microscope for
himself
(B) Adjusted the microscope for the whole
class
(C) Was so lel y concerned wit h the
mechanics of flowers
(D) Was so lel y concerned wit h the
mechanics of the microscope
