Antimicrobial / Antifungal: The study screened plants extracts - including Bixa orellana for
antimicrobial activity and MIC. B orellana showed low MIC against against E coli and a better MIC
against B cereus. Results showed that Bixa orellana, Justicia secunda and Piper pulchrum could
be
potential
sources
of
new
antimicrobial
agents.
Antimicrobial / Antifungal: Study of organic extract of BO showed to possess a narrow
spectrum of antimicrobial activity, effective only against Gram+ bacteria used in the study.
Antibacterial / Antioxidant / Antidiarrheal / Neuropharmacologic / Anticonvulsant/
Gastrointestinal Motility Effect: Preliminary pharmacologic studies on the methanol extracts
of BO leaves showed statistical decrease in locomotor activity, anticonvulsant effect, analgesic
and antidiarrheal effect and a delay i gastrointestinal motility. It also showed radical scavenging
properties and antibacterial activity against agents of diarrhea and dysentery.

Anti-Trichinellosis: Trichinellosis can cause diarrhea, fever, periorbital edema and myositis in
humans. This study on the methanol extracts of aerial parts of Av showed reduction of larval rate
with significantly reduced antibody response during the enteral and parenteral phases. Results
suggest Av can be an alternative drug against trichinellosis.

Anti-Protozoal: In a study of 10 lectins screened for cytotoxic activity against Acanthamoeba
sp. (a keratitis-causing amoeba) and Tetrahymena pyriformis, lectins from Schefflera odorata and
Swietenia macrophylla were found to possess high cytotoxic activity against the test organisms.

Antimicrobial / Root Juice: Study evaluated R. sativus root juice for antimicrobial potential
against five bacterial strains, viz. Klebsiella pneumonia, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas
aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis, and Escherichia. Results showed considerable antimicrobial
activity against all tested microorganisms.
Antibacterial / Seed Extract: Study evaluated the potentiality of different solvent extracts
against various pathogenic strains, viz. E coli, K pneumonia, P vulgaris, P aeruginosa, Shigella
sonnie, S typhi and S paratyphi. The highest activity was seen in ethanol and methanol extracts.
The effect could be secondary to extracted active compounds like flavonoids, phenolic
compounds,
saponins,
and
other
secondary
metabolites.
Anti-Inflammatory / Root Extract: Study evaluated the effect of a root extract on antiinflammatory activity in rats using a carrageenan induced paw edema model. The hydroalcoholic
extract showed potent anti-inflammatory activity which may be due to the presence of
flavonoids, phytosterols, and tannins and also inhibition of inflammatory mediators ( histamine,
serotonin, prostaglandins, bradykinin, substance P, etc.)

Zinnia
Antifungal. Phytochemical and antifungal screening of the whole plant of Z elegans yielded
7.6% saponins and showed pronounced antifungal activity against Fusarium moniliforme.
