A. LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED


Students would have gathered knowledge about the basics of oil and gas sector during there I
semester. Besides the basic knowledge they are required to review the magazines and news on day
to day basis which would help them in better understanding of the subject.
B. OBJECTIVES
The objective of the course is to give basic knowledge about the total system of the value chain
starting from well fluid flowing out of a hydrocarbon reservoir to host of Refinery and
petrochemicals like LPG, Petrol, Diesel, Lube Oil & plastics, fibers produced from the
intermediate products generated by processing the hydrocarbons feedstock. The course also
equips the students to understand the relationship between various components of business viz
exploration & production, transportations, Oil field processing, Refining, Petrochemicals etc. .
The course focuses on the practical aspects covering technology, system, economy and planning.
The course objectives are:
1.

To introduce you to understand the fundamentals about Oil and Gas sector.

2.

To teach the basic concepts of Petroleum & Crude Oil and Its Characteristics
- Get an overview of Macro-system.
- Understand the current and emerging opportunities in Oil and Gas Sector.

3. To give an overview of Exploration of Oil & Oil field Processing.


- Know about the Geological and Geophysical Surveys.
-Get familiar with Offshore & Onshore drilling, Oil field processing and
equipment.
4. Gas Business & Processing.

Oil Business & Processing.

Overview of refining sector.

7.

Introduction to Petrochemical industry.


- Major building blocks in petrochemical industry.

The overall theme of the course is to emphasize the process of thinking: qualitatively
quantitatively, and strategically, using concrete, real-life practical examples as specific exemplars

D. PEDAGOGY
It will be combination of class room teaching, class quizzes, group assignment and certain
contemporary (case studies) cases. The session will be interactive during the study (It is advised
to prepare the topics for discussion in the class in advance). For each Group tasks there will be
separate group for each activity)
E. COURSE COMPLETION PLAN
Lectures: 3 h/week; Tutorial / Assignment: 1 h/week;
Total hours per week: 4 contact hours per week is used to introduce new material and solve
sample exercises/ case studies. Tutorial time will be used for problem solving exercises, taking
up tests, assignments and discussing assignments.

Internal Assessment: Marks 100 (shall be done based on the following):

Class Tests: Class Tests will be taken during the semester to take feedback about the students
understanding about the domain. The test would comprise of short theory and objective type
questions.
Tutorials & Assignments: To encourage cooperation and better understanding of the subject.
Assignments will be allotted to students in groups, so that they can enhance their knowledge and
can have a better understanding of the subject.
NOTE - All schedules/announcements must be strictly adhered to. Penalty of 50% would be
levied (deduction of marks) on late submission of written assignment/ presentation.
Mid- Semester Examination: Marks 20
Mid- Semester examination shall be of two hour duration and shall be a combination of
Objective, short theory questions and numerical problems.
End -Semester Examination: Marks 50
End-Semester examination shall be of three hours duration. The examination paper shall have
objective & theory questions, short and long numerical problems.
Attendance
Students are required to have minimum attendance of 75% in each subject. Students with less
than said percentage shall not be allowed to appear in the end semester examination.
Cell Phones and other Electronic Communication Devices: Cell phones and other electronic
communication devices (such as Blackberries) are not permitted in classes, Tests or the
Mid/Final Examination. Such devices MUST be turned off and left at the front or back of the
room.
E-Mail and LMS: Each student in the class should have an e-mail id and a pass word to access
the LMS system regularly. Occasionally, important information and assignments (annexure) to
the class will be transmitted via e-mail/LMS. The best way to arrange meetings with us or ask
specific questions is by email.

submission.

Students are expected to read the concerned sessions contents in advance before coming
to the class.
The session will be made interactive through active participation from students. The
entire session will be conducted through question-answer, discussion, examples,
presentations etc.
Late entering in the class will not be allowed.
All schedules/ announcements must be strictly adhered to.
Students may be asked to prepare a topic out of the syllabi and teach a given topic on a
given day.
