About the Keyboard Simulator

What is the Keyboard Simulator?

The keyboard simulator is part of the WinAlign software. It simulates the operation
of the alignment sensors, thereby allowing training and demonstration of the system
without using a vehicle and real sensors, and without using the hardware simulator.

What Controls the Keyboard Simulator?

The keyboard simulator is controlled by the keyboard. When the console is displaying
any screen that uses data from actual sensors, you can control the keyboard simulator
using the keyboard.

What Does the Keyboard Simulator Simulate?

Simulation is provided for the following actions, conditions, or measurements:
enable/disable
selecting a sensor
compensating a sensor for runout
changing toe
changing camber
changing caster adjust
steering both wheels of one axle
changing the battery charge level
measuring ride height
rotating the wheel

Controlling the Keyboard Simulator

The Keys
The keyboard simulator is controlled by using the following keys:
F8

to enable, disable, and reset

F9, F10, F11, and F12 to select a sensor

c

to compensate a sensor

to reset a sensor
and

to change caster, ride height, and battery charges

and

,

, , and

to steer a wheel or an axle, to change camber, toe

and rotate the wheel
to steer a wheel to 0-9 degrees left or right
to adjust a control arm

These keys are modified using a combination of the Shift, Alt, and Ctrl keys. These
modifier keys are held down, as needed, while the keys listed above are pressed. For
example, to decrease the battery voltage of the selected sensor, hold down Alt and
press .
NOTE:

The complete key map is listed in the last section.

When you press a key to change a value, such as camber, pressing the key once
changes the value by a small amount. Pressing and holding the key will repeatedly
change the value by that same small amount. (This is the keyboard auto-repeating.)
Pressing and holding Shift (S) while changing the value will increase the speed of the
change. Thus, you control the changes by pressing the desired keys the appropriate
number of times, or by holding the keys down for the necessary length of time.
When the console displays any screen that uses data from real sensors, you can
control the keyboard simulator using the keyboard. On all other screens, these keys
have other functions (such as editing specs or notes) or are ignored.

keyboard simulator. The sensor diagnostics screens,
which are available through the Help key, always show
the data from the actual sensors.

NOTE:

If the Hunter Sensor I/O Board is NOT installed in the

system, then the keyboard simulator is always enabled.
This allows you to install the software in a notebook
style computer for training and demonstration purposes.
Under these conditions, the keys that would enable or
disable the keyboard simulator are ignored.

Selecting a Sensor
To select a sensor, press ONE of the sensor selection keys, as follows:
press F9

press F10 to select the RF sensor

press F11 to select the LR sensor
press F12 to select the RR sensor
Once a sensor is selected, keyboard simulator changes to camber, toe, etc. are
applied to that sensor.

Compensating a Sensor
To compensate a sensor, press Alt and c. This compensates the sensor
immediately.
When you compensate a sensor, the next sensor is automatically selected. This lets
you press Alt and c four times in a row to compensate all four sensors.

Showing Runout of a Sensor

When the Control Compensation popup screen is displayed, you will see some
runout with the simulated sensors. The amount of runout is simulated and randomized
for each sensor.
To rotate a wheel, press Alt and to rotate it to the left, or press Alt and to
rotate it to the right. The runout indicator will rotate with the wheel. Hold the keys down
to continuously rotate the wheel.

Tips

Learning to Use the Keyboard Simulator

Practice, practice, practice! Learn to change values quickly and smoothly, without
having to consult a cue card. The keys were chosen to make this easy to do.

Resetting the Keyboard Simulator

The keyboard simulator wakes up set to certain values for camber, toe, ride height,
and battery charge. These values will always be the same.
To reset the keyboard simulator to these values, press Shift and F8.
To reset only the selected sensor to these values, select the sensor, and then press
Alt and r.

Steering to a Preset Angle

You can steer an axle in one step to any whole angle from 0 to 9 degrees, either left or
right. For example, to steer to 8 degrees right, first select the axle by selecting one of
its sensors, then press Alt and 8. To steer to 8 degrees left, press Shift, Alt and
8.
This can be very useful when steering to measure caster. For example, to steer to 10
degrees left, first steer to 9 degrees left in one jump by pressing Shift, Alt and 9,
then steer further left using in the usual way. Once the left measurements have
been made, steer to 9 degrees right by pressing Alt and 9, then steer further right
using in the usual way.

Measuring Caster
To measure a caster of a known amount, do the following:
Begin measuring caster in the usual manner.
When the caster measure popup screen directs you to steer to the right 10
degrees, change left and right camber by computed amounts (as described below).
Finish measuring caster. The measured caster will have the desired amounts.
To compute how much to change camber, divide the desired caster by 2.86. Each
or keystroke changes camber by 0.01 degrees. If Shift is held down, each
keystroke changes camber by 0.04 degrees. You must steer to the center of the bar
graphs to produce accurate simulations using these computations.
For example, if the desired caster is 0.85 degrees, compute the change as 0.85 / 2.86
= 0.30 degrees. To change camber by this amount during caster steer, press Shift seven times, and two times (7 x 0.04 + 2 x 0.01 = 0.30).
