There is an undeniable trend in todays manufacturing enterprise. The

convergence of technologies between traditional information technology systems
and manufacturing operations provides users with substantial opportunities to
reduce risk and costs, provide secure access to information, and improve agility
and overall business performance. Now, industry leaders Rockwell Automation
and Cisco Systems have come together to accelerate this convergence, and help
you realize the benefits of:
A completely integrated network architecture uniting production intelligence
with the rest of the enterprise.
Flexible and secure system implementation allowing IT and Manufacturing
to easily deploy and maintain security, reliability, and quality of service across
the enterprise.
A scalable, future-proof network architecture using open standards, enabling
you to quickly and efficiently deploy new technologies and capabilities.

From Production through

the Enterprise
The convergence of manufacturing and information technologies
is rapidly moving forward increasing agility, efficiencies and
security while reducing costs and risk. This trend is driven by a
number of business and industry needs:
Global and multi-plant operations require comprehensive,
secure, integrated information to achieve peak performance
while maintaining flexibility and scalability at local or
regional locations. Achieving this level of performance and
agility requires integration between manufacturing and
business systems.
Use of standard technologies throughout the enterprise
provides secure guest and remote access to automation and
control systems enabling productivity and efficiency gains
while protecting critical manufacturing data and business
information.
Enterprise IT, Operations and Manufacturing functions
share common needs for increased visibility of information,
reduced costs and simplified management. Advanced
functionality deployment (VOIP, video, mobility, SONA, etc.)
is also expanding into traditional factory floor space,
increasing the need for improved communications using a
common network architecture.

Common Technology View

Visibility of production information is critical to achieving the
flexibility and responsiveness required in todays global
manufacturing environment, and Ethernet technology is the tool
that delivers this information. Given the competitive nature of
manufacturing and the accelerating rate of change in the global
economy, its important to be sure that the investment you make
today can continue to support your changing business needs over
time. Ethernet technology, along with the appropriate networking
features, ensures the performance, manageability, and security for
todays production control network, and provides the foundation
for deployment of new applications in the future, allowing you to
achieve even higher levels of productivity, better serve your
customers, and ultimately provide your competitive advantage.

Improved Efficiencies and Collaboration

Technology advances and the global acceptance of Ethernet have
made it an ideal choice to support automation applications using
standard networking technologies. Benefits include:
Deeper insight into operations, improving decision quality
and speed, shortening lead times, reducing line constraints and
material defects and improving your ability to predict staffing
and material needs.
Improved agility in responding to quickly changing customer
and market demands.
Improved regulatory compliance.
Lower integration, deployment and operational costs using a
simpler, flatter network architecture, freeing yourself from
the complexity of making several proprietary networks work
together.

Rockwell Automation and Cisco Systems have adopted the use of

the Common Industrial Protocol (CIP) networks for applications
throughout the plant, focusing on deployment of EtherNet/IP.
The EtherNet/IP specification is managed by ODVA, an
international vendor-independent association comprised of more
than 250 of the worlds leading automation companies. To date,
more than 150 vendors around the world support the EtherNet/IP
specification, promoting over 400 products with EtherNet/IP
connectivity. As open networks have grown in significance on the
plant floor (installed base 1,300,000 nodes with 25% market
share), demand for EtherNet/IP has skyrocketed.
EtherNet/IP uses the same TCP/IP and Ethernet technologies
for logical addressing providing infinite connectivity via the
World Wide Web. This provides you with visibility and
management of virtually any device from any location.

Reduced Risk
Ethernet is the most widely recognized networking technology
today. It provides multiple interoperable options in terms of cost
and reach, significant economies of scale, and an ample set of
equipment vendors for hardware and management tools. Its broad
acceptance and wide deployment have driven significant industry
investment, which has resulted in new technologies (such as 10G
Ethernet and 802.11 wireless Ethernet) that are compatible with
existing Ethernet products.
By utilizing widely adopted common technologies, you can benefit
from continuous investment, innovation and improvement,
reducing risk and increasing performance. As automation systems
increasingly adopt open standards, you will have the flexibility to
use common components across multiple systems, providing
additional investment protection and reducing the risk of
obsolescence with the deployment of new systems.
Leveraging the openness and availability of standard, unmodified
Ethernet means tapping into the experience of a network that is
well-established in the business world, making it easier to
understand and connect industrial devices and machines with the
rest of the enterprise. Youll see benefits in reduced wiring and
installation costs, additional diagnostic capabilities, space savings,
and the flexibility to reconfigure and upgrade systems as your
needs change.

Challenges
Implementing Ethernet technology throughout the enterprise
presents certain challenges. The network needs to be secure,
reliable, and meet the unique performance requirements of
manufacturing. These challenges also include the
cross-functional planning, design, implementation, and
management of the network architecture.

Reference Architectures
To help you successfully implement Ethernet networks throughout
the enterprise, Cisco Systems and Rockwell Automation are
bringing together our respective skills, leadership and technical
expertise to provide detailed design and implementation guidance.
These Reference Architectures support the real-time performance
requirements of factory networks, are optimized for control
protocol traffic considerations, and utilize network security
solutions that are appropriate for the factory floor. They focus on
specific manufacturing applications, and can be used as a guideline
when designing and deploying manufacturing networks.

The Reference Architectures, fully tested and documented by

Rockwell Automation and Cisco Systems, are designed to help IT
and Manufacturing work from the same models and use the same
language, reducing uncertainty when deploying technology,
enabling a successful integrated manufacturing system.

People and Process Optimization

Adapting to changing business requirements, technology
advancements, process improvements and changing work force
demographics all require new ways of thinking, interacting and
working together.
Successfully implementing a single network architecture will
improve efficiencies and collaboration, within your group and
across your enterprise, using common technologies and tools to
optimize performance.
