Miss H Root / 2016-2017SY/ Chemistry Applications

August 29, 2016

Dear Students, Parents and Sponsors:
Welcome to Wiesbaden High School home of the Warriors. I am looking forward to an exciting year at WHS.
Together I am confident we will make this year an interesting and rewarding educational experience for your
son/daughter.
In order to foster a successful learning environment, students are expected to bring all necessary material to class
daily. Each student is required to have a binder/notebook/folder (at least 1.5 inches), paper, pencil and pen (blue or
black ink only). The binder will contain quarter cumulative assignments; all class work (notes, assignments,
handouts, laboratory write-ups, assessments) will be kept in this binder. If students are unable to find a binder,
please let me know other arrangements will be made.
Detailed information regarding expectations/consequences, grading policies, assignments, study guides etc. may be
found at: http://msrootschemistry.weebly.com/. I encourage you to review this site regularly.
If you have any questions or concerns, I can be reached at Wiesbaden High School by phone at DSN: 337-2260,
CIV: 0611-705-2260 or email: Holly.Root@eu.dodea.edu. Please leave a message; I will return your contact as soon
as possible. I look forward to working with you and your son/daughter.
Sincerely,

Miss Holly Root

SEMESTER GRADING
Each Quarter - 40% Semester Exam - 20%
GRADING SCALE
100%-90% = A 89%-80% = B 79%-70% = C 69%-60% = D 59< = F
GRADE FORMULATION - CHEMISTRY APPLICATIONS
Laboratory - 30% Assignments - 25% Test/Quiz - 45%
LATE POLICY - CHEMISTRY APPLICATIONS
Every student is expected to participate to the best of his or her ability. Assignments are expected to be turned in on time; however,
during quarters one, two and three students are given a limited number of late passes (three, two, one respectively) which allow
students to turn in work late for partial credit up to the last two weeks prior to the end of the marking period. Late assignments
will not be accepted the last two weeks prior to the end of the marking period. Please be aware late assignments are graded as
quickly as possible, however current assignments take priority in grading. All assignments must be neat and done in blue/black ink
or pencil. If an assignment is messy or not in the required media it will need to be redone, following these directions. .
EXCUSED ABSENCES
When a student has an excused absence, he/she has one day for every day absent to make up his/her work, unless the assignments
has been made well in advance. In this case, the assignment is due on the day the student returns to school. It is each students
responsibility to obtain missed assignments, handouts and notes. Laboratories may be made up using class data available from a
classmate or in the classroom. Absent students are expected to conduct their own analysis of the data - not use a classmates/lab
groups.
ACADEMIC HONESTY
Academic honesty pertains not only to tests and homework assignments, but also to laboratory data.
Violations of academic honesty include but are not limited to the following:
Plagiarism
presenting someone else's words, ideas, artistry, product or data as one's own
presenting as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source
Collusion/Inappropriate Assistance
helping another commit an act of academic dishonesty
knowingly or negligently allowing work to be used by others.
Cheating
an act of deceit, fraud, distortion of truth or improper use of another person's effort to obtain an educational advantage
includes but is not limited to unauthorized access to examination materials prior to the examination itself
Fabrication/Falsification/Alteration
intentional misrepresentation, invention, exaggeration or alteration of information or data, whether written, verbalized or
demonstrated
Academic dishonesty is not acceptable in the classroom. Any assignment that is the product of academic dishonesty will not
receive credit. Credit loss for the assignment applies to any and all parties involved.

EXTRA CREDIT
Students will be provided with one privilege card upon enrolling in the class entitling them to a variety of passes. Unused passes
may be redeemed for extra credit at the end of each semester. Lost privilege cards will not be reissued. Additional opportunities
may be available on an individual basis. However, no extra credit will be accepted the last two weeks of each grading period.

CHEMISTRY APPLICATIONS GRADING DETAILS

a) Homework: Homework is due at the beginning of the class.

b) Quizzes and Pop Quizzes: Quizzes may be given at any time over any material previously discussed. I often
give pop quizzes. They are graded for accuracy. The number of points possible on each quiz is determined by
the number, difficulty, and type of questions on the quiz. More difficult questions are worth more points. Some of
these quizzes may be partner or group quizzes.

c) Laboratory: Laboratory write-ups may be formal or informal. Lab write-ups will be graded for the analysis of
data as well as the gathering of information. Some lab write-ups may be partner or group write-ups. Data is to be
recorded in ink - never type/re-write data; points will be deducted for re-written/typed data

d) Tests: Assessments will be given at the end of each unit. Most assessments will be cumulative and may be
project based. The exact test date will be announced at least 3 days ahead of time.

e) Notebook/Materials: You will be required to bring your agenda and other materials to class each day. There
will be days that I will check each student to see that they have all of these. You will lose some points if your
notebook is not neat and organized. These checks will not be announced ahead of time. (Any time you do not have
all materials you will also lose points.)

f) Quiz retakes: Students may retake quizzes PRIOR to tests over the material by completing a corrective
assignment; tests may not be retaken. Any quiz retake must be arranged for seminar or Tuesday/Thursday Scholars
at least 3 days in advance with me. Students will keep the higher of the two grades earned on any quiz taken twice.

Please complete and detach the portion below for your student to return to Miss Root.
