Lauren Schmetterling had the

community excited when it
learned that the Moorestown native was going to the Olympic
games in Rio. Now, not only can
the community be excited by the
28-year-olds presence at the
games, but it can also be proud of
her gold medal performance.
It felt great to win a gold
medal at the Olympics. I have
been overwhelmed with love and
support from family, friends and

the Moorestown community,

Schmetterling said. I trained six
hours a day, six to seven days a
week, 12 months a year, for the
last six years to even make it to
the starting line at the Olympics.
I have been very diligent with my
training, and I wanted to leave no
stone unturned in the way of
strength, fitness or recovery.
From rowing at Moorestown
High School to Colgate University
to the four seat of the womens
eight, Schmetterling has worked
tirelessly to maintain both her
strong work ethic and mindset
that helped manifest her continuous growth in the sport. Demonstrating that hard work does indeed pay off, her team finished its
Olympic race on Saturday, Aug. 13
in 6:01.49, a 02.49 second faster finish than the second-place team,
Great Britain.
Watching Lauren and her
team win a gold medal was surreal. I was filled with emotion, joy,
relief and excitement, Lorie
Schmetterling, Laurens mother,
said. Lauren has worked on
achieving this Olympic dream for
many years, and to see it come to
fruition was a proud moment for
the Schmetterling family and myself.
According to her mother, not

only is Lauren a strong, dedicated
athlete, but she also cares deeply
for others. When Lauren was initially chosen for the Olympic
team, she called her mother to
relay the good news. Lorie responded, "congratulations," and

I love to sing but I cant really

try, Peg Heenan, a 94-year-old

part of a referendum designed to
replace roofs, update HVAC systems and make improvements to
bathroom facilities and science
labs. Although most projects will
be completed before the first day
of school, a few HVAC updates
did not finish this year and therefore will continue next summer.
This year, William Allen Middle School has newly renovated,
state-of-the-art science rooms and
a new roof. It has also added a few
new enrichment courses in poetry and psychology and continues
to tweak its core curriculums to
meet the needs of all students.
Im excited for almost every
aspect of this new year. Construction is always a little tense in the
beginning, but were on target,

part of this plan, every student

will have access to a laptop computer rather than having to utilize one of the schools computer
labs. With this new available technology, the district hopes to implement the next generation of
science standards and incorporate more STEM, robotics and
hands-on knowledge.
This is the general direction
of education, McCartney said.
Helping to implement these
changes, 20 to 25 new staff members have been added to district
this year. These staff members include teachers, long-term substitutes, special education teachers,
technology specialists, a special
projects manager and a development manager who will work
with the schools to help secure
sources of revenue. All new
teachers participated in new
teacher orientation on Tuesday,
Aug. 16, approximately three
weeks before the first day of
classes scheduled for Wednesday,
Sept. 7.
Also before the official school
year begins, the district has been
partaking in an aggressive construction program that has involved a lot of outside work to repair parking lots and to make
schools more accessible with additional parking. The middle

theres a lot to be excited about
when it comes to the upcoming
Moorestown Township Public
Schools academic year.
First, the school district welcomes Scott McCartney as its new
superintendent. The 47-year-old
spent the last 11 years as the superintendent of Egg Harbor
Township. After three superintendents resigned from the school
district within the past three
years, MTPS hired McCartney to
assume the role with a 6-1 vote in
May. His contract for five years
began on Friday, July 1.
Im still in the process of
learning what is and whats new
here theres always a learning
curve in any new job, McCartney said. I know I have enough
experience as a superintendent to
know the job, but in any new community, there are differences, and
the only way you can learn the
community is by talking to the
people and living it with them.
Looking, listening and learning

classes,
Moorestown High School will be
adding AP Psychology, AP computer science principles, topics in
college mathematics, video production and STEAM Thinkers,
Builders and Doers to its available classes. The high school is especially excited about the new
video production classes and
teaching students the basics of
design and production, as it plans
to implement a television production studio within the next one to
three years through fundraising,
budget
development
and
fundraising efforts.
The district is also planning for
its adjustment to a 1:1 technology
plan for grades six through 12. As

Moorestown Friends
readies for year
By LINDSEY NOLEN
The Sun
As the Moorestown Friends
School prepares to begin the
school year, it would like to make
note of a few changes that will
take place.
First, the private transportation service has been expanded to
serve all families who live in
school districts that do not provide busing. Additionally, Gold
Bear Shuttle will provide late
shuttle services to middle and
upper school students participat-

ing in after-school activities and

athletics. Shuttle service will depart at 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. in the
fall.
Next, the Lower School Coding
Program, which debuted in the
2015-2016 school year for preschool through grade four, will expand to include grade five this
year.
Lastly, the school year will
begin five minutes sooner, at 8
a.m., for grades five through 12.
An accessible ramp was also
added to the main Stokes Hall entrance to increase accessibility.

The theme for this years
Moorestown 4th of July Parade
was stars and stripes. The contest, introduced by Brownie Girl
Scout Troop leader Cathi Johnson, is open to all children ages 5
through 9 who attend school in
Moorestown. The parade committee would like to announce the
winners of this years Freedom
Poster Contest. Scarlett Murphy,
7, came in first place, and Maya
Saltzman, 7, came in second.
Third place was awarded to Bella
Lipske, 6, and honorable mention
was given to Meghan North, 6. All
awardees currently attend the
George C. Baker Elementary
School.
The winners rode in the front
of the parade waving their flags
from the back of a red, white and
blue decorated truck. The girls
were dressed in patriotic attire
and with headbands filled with
stars. Their fine artwork is now
on display in the Childrens Corner at the Moorestown Library.

2016-2017 school year.
At The Sun, were all about community news, which, of course, includes
covering the local school districts.
Well be at as many school board meetings as possible and do our best to stay

Too often, the news is driven by

Too often, the good work of young people is ignored or, at the least, certainly

We want to change that. We want to

when young people go beyond the ordinary to help someone or have an outstanding accomplishment.

Theater program celebrates 44th anniversary

By KAHRA F. BUSS
Dept. of Parks & Recreation
This summer was the 44th anniversary
of the Department of Parks and Recreation Moorestown Summer Theater Program. Beginning in 1973 with an all-volunteer staff to produce Tom Sawyer, the
Parks Theater Program has grown and
evolved into a mainstay of Moorestown
culture and activity. This year also marked
the second year of the Recreation Teen
Theater Program. Following a tremendously successful first year, the 2016 season
boasted a wonderful performance of
James and the Giant Peach. The continued success and growth of both programs

has secured the Recreation Theater efforts

in the annual calendar.
This summer Shrek Jr. brought performers and theater patrons out in droves.
With a cast of more than 100 children and
the support of Recreation staff and CITs,
this production was a huge success. Over
the course of three days, these actors and
actresses performed four back-to-back
shows to a consistently packed house. The
diversity of this production allowed for an
increased number of children to hold individual parts as well as chorus roles. The
goal of Recreation Theater is to highlight
the talent and abilities of all children and
allow novice performers the opportunity
to become involved. By encouraging diver-

sity and accessibility in the theater, children are able to find their voice and improve their self-confidence in an encouraging and supportive environment.
The Recreation Teen Theater has been a
tremendous addition to the recreation
summer offerings. Many of these teen participants grew up on Recreation Summer
Theater and were thrilled to be able to expand their experience. Boasting a sturdy
cast of nearly 20 players, Teen Theater performed an amazing rendition of James
and the Giant Peach. In the true spirit of
Shakespearean theater, this production
was held on the third floor of the Church

the early onset of sexual activity,

sedentary lifestyle, depression,
suicide attempts and confrontations with the juvenile justice system.
The program also includes lessons to encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development among adolescent girls while also discussing
with them their own beliefs, challenges and experiences at this
age. Physical activity is then
woven into the program to inspire an appreciation of fitness
and to build habits that lead to a
lifetime of health.

At the end of each three-month

session, each girl participates in a
GOTR celebratory, non-competitive 5k event. Completing this run
gives participating girls a tangible understanding of the confidence that comes through accomplishment.
The three things we believe
and advocate for at Girls on the
Run are to be yourself, try your
best and have fun. They are the
three most powerful tenets of a
healthy, exciting and authentic
life, Sydney Davis, executive director of GOTR New Jersey East,
said. I am inspired every day by
girls who surprise themselves
with what they can accomplish
when they put their heart and
mind to the task and by the countless volunteers who are the heartbeat of this awesome organiza-

tion.
Davis, a teacher, therapist, runner and mother of two girls, established GOTR in the spring
2001. In its first year of operation,
the program had two team sites
with 35 participants in Summit
and Millburn. Fourteen years
later, in 2015 the organization
served more than 2,000 girls in its
councils service area that includes Mercer, Burlington, Essex,
Union and Morris counties.
Any girl could benefit from
our program, but the ideal girl
may be one who is struggling
with finding a creative outlet for
physical activity, who needs a safe
place to explore her issues and to
increase her self-esteem, Program Director Anne Klein said.
There are no athletic requirements for our program, as we are
non-competitive and a self-esteem
program first that creatively integrates running as a life skill.
At the national level, Rita DeBate, an associate professor of
community and family health at
the University of South Florida,
and her associates used a survey
of more than 1,000 girls who participated in the GOTR program
through affiliates around the
country to compare GOTR participants attitudes toward body
image, self-esteem and physical
activity at the beginning and end
of the season. The study showed
participants in GOTR not only
had higher self-esteem and satisfaction with body image, but were
also more committed to being
physically active.
As a girl who couldnt make
the cut onto one sports team, I
love advocating to tomorrows
women that all of us can make
the choice to be an athlete, Davis
said. It is as simple as saying yes,
believing in yourself and showing up. Girls on the Run helps
make that possible for all of us
we are all superstars.

28 THE MOORESTOWN SUN AUG. 31SEPT. 6, 2016

Concert will also remember members

now part of a choir in the sky
CONCERT
Continued from page 6
while remembering 9/11 and recognizing the other happenings
the day of the event. There will be
12 songs performed, some of the
more famous of which include
the
Beautiful,
Together,
Sweet Caroline, Imagine,
Try to Remember, God Bless
the U.S.A. and Auld Lang Syne.
Although remembering 9/11 is
a part of this concert, its not
what its all about, said Sharyn
Blatstein, lead escapades expert
and mentor and Silvertones director. While it happens to land
on 9/11, this concert is also for
National Assisted Living Week,

Grandparents Week and to help

give back to the residents.
The Silvertones will also be
using this event to remember the
members who enjoyed being in
the group and are now a part of
a choir in the sky. These members include Helen Stecher, Kathleen and Bill Carley, Herman
Mathias,
Eleanor
Hemphill,
Frank Delia and Florence Donnelly.
The group, which is comprised
of 11 members, also wishes to
thank its veterans, William
Carston, Wallace Easterly and
Richard Stecher and Victor Caronia, who will be helping to make
this concert special. Stecher, a
member of the Silvertones, will
be reciting the first portion of the
song God Bless the U.S.A. by
Lee Greenwood, and the remain-

ing veterans will participate in a

dramatic finish to the songs performance.
As a young lady, I was a part of
the choir at Saint Laurentius
Parish, a Roman Catholic parish
in the Fishtown neighborhood of
Philadelphia,
Frances
Staniszewski said. The Silvertones helps bring back memories.
Those wishing to attend this
performance should RSVP to the
Brandywine
Living
at
Moorestown Estates at (856) 7780600 by Tuesday, Sept. 6. Refreshments will be served at the end of
the concert as always.
The Silvertones will be hosting
their next performance, a holiday
concert, in December. The group
also hosts a spring concert each
year in April or May.

Also dating back, the dynastic
U.S. womens eight has held 11

high standards did not make this
years championship race any
easier. The team faced tough competition from Canada, which ini-

tially led the race, Britain and Romania.

I believe there is no team at
the Olympics that works harder
than the USA women rowers.
When Katelin, the coxswain,
made the call We are the USA
Women's Eight, I wanted to represent all my teammates to the
best of my ability, Schmetterling
said. At the same time, I wanted
to work with my boatmates to
make our boat move as fast as
possible. I could feel all my boatmates respond to that call, and I
felt the boat surge forward immediately.

she demonstrated her mental

strength and fortitude, characteristics her coach at Moorestown
High School, Jen Wesson, said
she has always possessed. The
coach continued by saying that
Schmetterling always distinguished herself from other rowers by really focusing on the task
at hand, allowing her to make it
to a place in the sport that very
few people do.
[Lauren] was a walk-on her
freshman year, she knew nothing
about the sport, but she was an
extremely hard worker and certainly worked for every success
that she has had, Wesson said. I
was so excited to hear that she
made the Olympic team. Even
though it was a boat that was favored to win anything can happen during a race, and I was overjoyed she was able to get the job
done and bring home the gold not
only for the U.S., but for the town
of Moorestown and all female
rowers that will continue to look
up to her.
Looking forward, Schmetterling plans to keep challenging
herself in rowing while striving
to be the best athlete, rower, teammate and person she can be.
