Objective: To Determine The Velocity Ratio For Compound Gear Train
Apparatus used: compound gear train apparatus, digital tachometer
Theory: A spur gear pair linked by two cylindrical joints forms a simple closed kinematic chain or gear train. In this compound gear train, a third gear wheel is fixed to one of the gear wheels, and a fourth gear is free to turn about the other shaft. Thus, two gears on one shaft rotate in sync while the other pair rotates relative to one another on the other shaft Gear trains consists
Driving gears - attached to the input shaft
Driven gears/Motor gears - attached to the output shaft Idler gears - interposed between the driving and driven gear in order to maintain the direction of the output shaft the same as the input shaft or to increase the distance between the drive and driven gears Let N1= speed of first driver in r.p.m
T1= no. of first driver teeth
N2= speed of first follower in r.p.m
T2= no. of first follower teeth
N3= speed of second driver in r.p.m
T3= no. of second driver teeth
N4= speed of last follower in r.p.m
T4= no. of last follower teeth
Since wheel 1 gear with wheel2, therefore
N2/ N1 = T1/ T2 Similarly, N4/ N3= T3/ T4 Multiplying above eqn N2/ N1 X N4/ N3 = T1/ T2 X T3/ T4 N4 / N1= (T1 X T3)/ (T2 X T4) i.e Product of teeth on the drivers
