Black Box Theatre Colorado Springs

The Black Box Theatre in Colorado Springs will close on May 31st to be
replaced by The Grim Reaper Comedy Club and Theatre. The 85-seat theatre
was opened in mid-2013 when local theatre teacher Nancy Holaday decided
to lease the space for the University School of Colorado Springs (USCS)
theatre department.
A show by Improv Colorado and a performance of Jane Eyre will be the last
productions at the Black Box Theatre. And when the curtains come down the
audience will be saying good bye to the Black Box Theatre for good. Instead,
they can come back to the same space on June 1st for a comedy night.
Celebrated comedian Chris Fonseca has signed the lease for the space
occupied by the Black Box Theatre and will re-open it as The Grim Reaper
Comedy Club and Theatre.
Residents of the west side can watch stand-up comedian Bob Zany on
opening night who is known for The Zany Report a segment on the radio
program The Bob and Tom Show.
When asked for the reason behind her decision to close The Black Box
Theatre, owner and director Nancy Holaday cited financial as well as
personal reasons. Despite having a few grants and donors, Ms. Holaday was
struggling to make ends meet and was unwilling to charge her audience the
ticket prices needed to keep the theatre afloat.
Over the years the Black Box Theatre has put up numerous shows performed
by students of USCS as well as local artists and performance groups such as
Tin Roof Productions. The space was also used by other schools in Colorado
such as Little School on Vermijo and James Irwin Charter High School. While
the Grim Reaper Comedy Club and Theatre will not be a non-profit
enterprise, owner Chris Fonseca has stated his intention to let local schools,
charities and artists rent the space.
