Dear Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull

I am writing to raise my concerns of domestic violence in Australia. Domestic

violence is violent or aggressive behaviour within the home, typically involving
the violent abuse of a spouse or partner. It effects every part of a victims life, as
children living with domestic violence suffer emotional and psychological trauma
from the impact of living in a household that is dominated by tension and fear.
When domestic violence gets bad it can lead to serious injury or even death. This
event occurred for Albert Proud on a night when he just snapped. Some say that
this has to do with alcohol but it is also represented as severe domestic violence.
The victim Richelle Kadadi was left in a coma with horrific brain injuries. Still after
6 months she has not been able to recover and doctors believe that she will
never be the same. I am writing to you to ensure that this depressing story is one
of the last.
The abuser Albert Proud may be an AFL star but he should still be given the same
rights as every other Australian. He has been sentenced to 6 years in jail with the
ability to apply for parole after only 12 months. In other words for destroying
Richelles life he gets let off easy after 12 months be will be living at home
continuing his own life. It should also be alerted to that he has acted out against
family and friends before, so allowing him back on the streets will inevitably lead
towards another person being abused, another life ruined. This is the reason
people get away with it, because when they are caught, they are still allowed to
continue seemingly without fair consequence compared to the pain he has
caused. It is unfair to be a victim of constant abuse due to terror fear and
intimidation, Richelle has been given an unjust future. People get away with it
due to the soft laws towards this issue that protects the abuser and leaves
victims out to dry. I beg you to strengthen these laws and ensure it applies for all
forms of domestic violence, emotional, physical and financial to send a strong
message.
Currently a lot more can be done to solve the social issue of domestic violence.
There are public campaigns on our televisions to try and force an end to
domestic violence but we need to do more. We need to look at the laws around
domestic violence and the fact that it can be different in the modern generation
due to technology and social media. Domestric violence is getting worse with an
inappropriate half a million Australian women reported that they had
experienced physical or sexual violence or sexual assault in the past 12 months.
This shows that the problem is not being solved. Make the laws stronger and
make the abused suffer the consequences in prison.
A bible verse that is connected to this is Ephesians 5: 21-33. It says
Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For
the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his
body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so
also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave
himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with
water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church,
without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In

this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He
who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own
body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church
for we are members of his body. For this reason a man will leave his
father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one
flesh. This is a profound mysterybut I am talking about Christ and the
church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves
himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
This is saying that a man should treat his wife as Christ treated the world and the
church. This is the future we should hope for where every household has mutual
respect between parties, so that nobody has to live in fear and people live in
peace.
My reflection is that we have a major issue, not only in Australia but all around
the world. We should become a world leader and begin to strengthen domestic
violence laws to reinsure Australian citizens that they have the right to be safe.
From all those people that have been directly affected by domestic violence in
this generation, let it be the last.
The religious and spiritual response is quite strong specifically from the catholic
Christian church as Pope Francis has spent a lot of time promoting strong action
to stop domestic violence against woman. The response could be stronger and it
should be a main issue to solve for all religions around the world to permanently
stop the rise in family and domestic violence to reduce the number of abuser in
our society but for possible victims to avoid living in fear.
