COURSE OUTLINE

2016/2017

COURSE NAME: Local Area Networks

COURSE CODE: CMPA1300

COURSE DESCRIPTION
While a thorough working knowledge of computer operating systems software and services that play an integral role in the CNA
program is paramount, so too are the protocols and devices (the infrastructure) these platforms use to communicate. This course
begins with a view of the models and protocols used by network administrators to manage the flow of data before moving to the
configuration of the infrastructure devices themselves. Using network analysis tools and procedures, students will explore and
analyze an enterprise LAN network. Topics include network protocols, structured cabling, IP addressing and LAN device
configuration.
Course Credits: 4.50
Equivalent Courses: CNA1300

LEARNING OUTCOMES
OUTCOME
1

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to

Explain and analyze common data communication protocols within the standard reference models.
The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome:
Describe the purpose and basic operation of the protocols in the Open Systems Interconnection
(OSI) and Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) models.
Identify and select the proper network components in a Local Area Network (LAN) environment.

Install and test cabling in an enterprise LAN environment to structured cabling standards.
The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome:
Identify and use the different cable types in a LAN environment.
Troubleshoot cabling issues in a LAN environment.

Capture and analyze computer network traffic.

The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome:
Use a protocol analyzer application to identify, predict, and troubleshoot the behavior and flow
of data between network hosts.

Deploy and configure layer 2 switching in a LAN environment.

The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome:
Describe how Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs) create logically separate networks.
Configure and verify VLANs.
Describe and implement security on a data-link layer switch.

Deploy and configure layer 3 switching in a LAN environment.

The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome:
Describe the operation and necessity of using private and public IP addresses in a LAN
environment.
Identify and create the appropriate IPv4 addressing scheme in a LAN environment.
