This document describes the character and activities of Distant Relativess

yearly Kilifi New Year event for prospective sponsors of the event.

Kilifi New Year a Success Story:

The first Edition, Kilifi New Year 2014 took place on December 31st 2013 as a partnership
between Kenya Nights Ltd and Distant Relatives Ltd. The event, hosted on the premises of
Distant Relatives Ecolodge & Backpackers in Kilifi, featured some of Kenyas finest DJs,
and drew a niche crowd of attendees primarily from Nairobi, Mombasa, Malindi and
Watamu. The event immediately established itself as the most high profile New Years Eve
event in Kenya. The first event is estimated to have welcomed about 400 guests.
The following year Distant Relative took on the management of the Kilifi New Year 2015
independently and consolidated its position as the premium New Years Eve event in East
Africa. The week leading up to NYE 2015 saw performances from some of Kenyas most
high profile acts including The Itch, Map Jam, Lucky Birdy, Afro-Simba and Dread Steppa.
The event itself welcomed performers such as Barney Barrow, Sean Fraser, Oliver Nicklin,
Jamie Melvin, Max Melesi, Toby 2 Shoes (SA) and Skaface (UK) resulted in an experience
of musical depth rarely found in East Africa culminating on the night of the 1st of January
with a giant Burning Man of 12 meters height (in reference to Burning Man Festival and
Afrika Burn Festival). Design & Dcor from Kenyan artists Ginka Sommerlatte and Rohini
Das provided a surreal atmosphere of unprecedented character. Please have a look at some of
the event photos HERE. The event sold out quickly with ticket sales (Ksh 5000 per person)
capped at 600 in order to preserve the exclusivity and intimacy of the event. On the NYE
night alone, bar sales averaged a staggering Ksh 5500 per person.
Last year, Kilifi New Year 2016 was taken to a new level again. The long awaited event was
being spoken about 6 months in advance and was sold out with 1000 guests in attendance for
a ticket price of 6,000 Ksh. The event was extended into becoming a 36 hour event starting at
6PM on the 31st and finishing at 8am on the 2nd of January. The event was a blazing success.
We were pleased to partner with an eclectic team of experienced professionals from Kenya,
Australia, South Africa and Zimbabwe, some of which are behind the success of such events
as Rocking The Dasies (SA), Balkanology (SA), Cape Town Earthdance, Origin Festival
Cape Town, and the Harare International Festival of the Arts. The performance line-up of last
year was also stepped up a notch with Wankelmut as headliner (Double Platinum Single in

The Event Space and Line-Up for Kilifi New Year 2017:
We have already started planning the much awaited event. This year we have decided to
increase the space: the event will be hosted on a beautiful 6 acre creek-front property directly
neighbouring Distant Relatives Ecolodge & Backpackers. This should allow us to increase
the number of tickets for sale to 1500 guests with an entry price of 6,000 Ksh (same price as
last year).
The line-up is not finalized, mainly for budgetary reasons, and we are also still negotiating
terms of artist bookings with their respective agents. The event has gained enough reputation
over the past three years for artists to be expecting a decent Performance Fee, as well as
flights, food and accommodation, often for 2 people (either agent or partner), and a 15 to
20% Agent Fee. The tentative line-up has not yet been made public hence your discretion
will be appreciated:

KILIFI NYE is a radically creative, two day, explosion of musical, tropical and beach culture
set on the gorgeous banks of Kilifi creek in Kenya. Incredible performers from around East
Africa and the world come together to put on a show like none you will have seen before as
we celebrate the intersection between African and World electronic music. The line-up is
shaping up to be truly incredible so watch this space for artist announcements. You wont be
disappointed!
We invite you to arrive early on Dec 31st, pitch your tent in our tropical forest, have a cold
drink at the bar and prepare yourselves for 36 hours of musical mayhem.
Contributors from around the world will unite to turn our beachside playground into an
extraordinary exhibition of colours, lights, installations and stalls of mind blowing diversity
and proportion.
Immerse yourself in an incredible journey of dynamic sounds and amazing dcor on night
one as we dance till the sun rises. Be sure to keep going for the infamous early morning
sunshine reggae set. After that, maybe cool off in the shade for a few hours nap before the
music starts again for the second day. This is when things really get fun as we throw out our
inhibitions, let loose, and begin the New Year with incredible energy and a union of spirits.
Just after midnight well hit the beach in the moonlight for a boogie as we burn our giant
Burning Man effigy.

Our Target Crowd The Demographics:

Influent / connected crowd / the connectors
Kilifi New Year has doubled its audience in the past two years and is expected to triple its
audience this year compared to the first edition (Kilifi New Year 2014).This year the event is
expected to sell out once more and hence to welcome 1500 guests, added to which one can
safely expect a team of about 30 volunteers and another 30 complimentary tickets. Our
attendees range from 18 years old to 50 year old professionals. Our main audience is
composed of 25 to 40 years old with an average salary of $40,000 per year, more or less
fairly distributed as Male 45% / Female 55%

These attendees include National and International electronic music lovers consisting of
Kenyans, expats residing in Nairobi, and tourists. We draw a truly diverse crowd. Most of
foreign visitors though have a strong tie to Kenya: they will either have grown here and work
overseas, or have been coming and going regularly ever since.
The audience can otherwise be described as the young, new hipster crowd that is welcoming
change and modernity in Kenya. They are mostly people with university level education that
are either employed or very commonly will be owning and running their own businesses
based here in Kenya. Many of them will be people of creative professions in senior
management positions of young and hip companies. They enjoy good food, good company,
good drinks and wont hesitate to pay a premium for the quality the crowds that enjoy
hanging out at ArtCaffe, Talisman and Purdy Arms in Nairobi. They expect high quality
service, they are financially well-off and like to socialize. They are happy to spend 6000ksh
for such a high quality event and seeing how we have never received any complaint about
the entrance price, they would most likely be happy to pay more if we proportionately
increased the event quality. Many of them will attend music festivals across Europe and
Africa. They are also simply-speaking the slightly older professional party-going
demographic.
Throughout the year, Distant Relatives Ecolodge Backpackers welcomes this same crowd
described above where they come spend their weekends and holidays to relax and party with
friends in a happy and socially diverse sustainable environment. The reputation of the Distant
Relatives speaks for itself - we are ranked #1 of 321 existing hotels in our category on the
coast with more than 250 excellent reviews on Tripadvisor. Distant Relatives Restaurant is
rated amongst the ten best on the coast and we are certified by Ecotourism Kenya. The
Lonely Planet chose Distant Relatives as their Special Pick of the area and said If you

Why Are We Seeking a Sponsor?

Most of our event is managed and staffed by volunteers (apart from Bars and Security).
Those include professional artists, musicians, festival builders, professional sound technicians
and various other members of our community all lending a hand with their various areas of
expertise. Many artists over the past years have bypassed their agents to come perform for
free simply asking for us to cover their expenses. Our head decorator is a professional artist
on a 6 figure salary and yet never charged us for her work as she believes in what we have
created and wants to see it grow.
Without their support, our event would not have been financially sustainable. The event has
gained such a reputation of Excellence because we have never cut down on costs whether on
Dcor, Sundsystem, Line-up, Security setup etc. If we did reduce our expenses in these
various departments, guests would doubtlessly be heavily disappointed and it would be hard
to regain their confidence the year after. Hence, finding sponsors that could help us cover the
costs of Artists and Dcor would truly make a difference into maintaining this events statute
as the best run, most mind-blowing event of Kenya, and perhaps only second Lake of Stars
Festival in East Africa.

This years plan for paid advertisement has not yet been finalized. We are aiming to spend
more than past years on printed marketing this year. The name of the main Sponsor will be

Beyond paid advertisement, our reputation is growing and the biggest publishers of the
country are mentioning the event without us even asking (The Nation, The Standard, UP
Magazine, Kenya Buzz, Xpat Link etc). Many publications have asked us to send them text
and info about the event we will include the main Sponsors name in the main event
description.
